APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 18, 2007 (MJD 54423) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz (swing) Dmitry Bizyaev (observer) Howard Brewington (observer) Steph Snedden (phone) Jon Brinkmann (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SN & SEGUE Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- sdsshost2 was rebooted because of a murmur problem; see log. Run #7175, On-telescope bias Run #7176, scanStripe 82 N 113 to 151 (including ramps) Run #7177, scanStripe 82 N 164 to -123 (including ramps) Run #7178, scanStripe 1406 N 69 to 102 (including ramps) Added a little more signal to Cart 08, plate 2828, sop session problems notwithstanding; see log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- During setup, we noticed that commands were taking a lot longer than usual to be executed, although they were still eventually be executed properly. We called Jon and he informed us that the delay in command execution was due to TPM logs being copied over to the new sdsshost2. This meant that communication with sdsshost2 was slower than usual. Jon cancelled the copying job since it was hindering set up. As of 22:13Z there are 379G free on /data and 148G free on /files. Spectro focus still set for ~5C. No adjustments made from yesterday's settings. 23:06Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans on. We encountered problems when trying to check the fiducial crossings. I sourced fiducialCor.tcl and the murmur windows popped up as usual, but when I slewed the telescope to the zenith, there were no crossings printed into the murmur log. I tried the rotator to see if it was just a problem with the altitude, but still nothing was printed into the fiducial correction murmurs. I tried sourcing the fiducial correction file from a fresh iop session and then no murmur windows appeared and instead the following message was given in the iop window: -- MURMUR CLIENT STATUS : "Can't SEND to MURMUR server - IO error" -- Errno message : -- MURMUR CLIENT STATUS : "Can't SEND to MURMUR server - IO error" -- Errno message : mur_send_text failure, error code : 0x800001fa -- MURMUR CLIENT STATUS : "Server Reconnected" -- Night: ------ 23:56Z Sunset 00:05Z Mounted imager. 00:25Z On-telescope bias inside darkened enclosure; Run # 7175. 00:50Z Enclosure off; filled spectro dewars; adjusted top/bottom balance. 01:08Z Run # 7176, scanStripe 82 N -startLambda 111.0 Seeing = ~1.7" as reported by seeingRun Alt = 44.7 degrees under photometric skies with moon. muError was slightly high at -8.9" via skippy; see below. With the help of Steph Snedden and Jon Brinkmann, we continued to work on the murmur problem from this afternoon. Jon finally decided that we needed to reboot sdsshost2. Unfortunately, we were imaging 82N by that time. So, Steph suggested that we continue with this scan until the moon became a problem. Then, we should ask Jon to reboot the sdsshost2. Jon sent out an email to 25m-observers@apo.nmsu.edu that detailed the problem. 03:50Z endDrift because the moon was within 8-degrees of the telescope. We also had thin clouds moving in from the north that scattered the moonlight. 04:00Z Jon Brinkmann rebooted host2, which solved the murmur problem. Only about 15 minutes was lost to this problem. 04:17Z Run # 7177, scanStripe 82 N -startLambda 164.0 Seeing = ~1.4" as reported by seeingRun Alt = 48.5 degrees under mostly photometric skies with moon. muError was slightly high at -8.6" via skippy; see below. We had a problem with this field; the gFlat would not appear after several tries. An error box stated that the flat was too faint. We also discovered that the guider camera was not working and needed to be rebooted. We also killed the sop session, restarted, and finally got the gFlat to the the saoDisplay. After the cals, we only had time for one 12-minute exposure in twilight. We lost about 20-minutes to these problems. 12:57Z endNight finished and was happy. Misc Watcher messages are posted in the log. We got an email from Steph; she ran the byebye script MJDs 54406 and 54407. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
