APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday December 4, 2007 (MJD 54439) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko (day) Dmitry Bizyaev (observer) Kaike Pan (observer) Steph Snedden (support) French Leger (support) David Schlegel (visitor) Craig Loomis (visitor) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Five hours was lost to find huge offsets. We finished one plate 1785, got signals on plates: 2853 and 2825. Scale changes and focus adjustments can be done as usual. Engineering crew fixed the problems we experiences in past two nights. Problems: 1) Pointing: We Cloud not find the fields for cartridge 5, 7, and 9 (see log) From images of stripe 82. We found huge offsets: -125" in ra, 45" in dec, and applying these offsets found field for cartridge 6, 4, and 2)comas were seen in the images. 3) quailities of images changes during scans (see log). 4) Cartridge ID for plate 2840 (cartridge 7) was not correct in the plugMap file. We changed, but still could not find the field. 5) guiding stars disappeared after mid-calib and could not find them with spiralPattern in 40". ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- After two previous nights the problem with secondary mirror actuators has been found and fixed. The work with this problem has continued until 00:30Z and it induced the delay with opening. To keep save the time we skipped the spectro collimation focusing and left the collimation for 7C as previous night. All other equipment are checked and work properly. Diskspace is 239G on /data and 256G on /file. The E door is opened from the noon. No other ventilation started until the engineering work finish. Night: ------- 00:50Z cart 5, plt 2815. We could not find the FK5star within arc minutes. Then we decided to switch to imager and try to find the offsets. 01:50Z imager mounted. 02:09Z run 7212 stripe 81 N. started at lambda 175. As soon as we seeing images, we found there were comas in the images which indicated that mirrors need to be collimated. David run his version skippy on this run and found that the pointing was good. But his version skippy only give offset in one dimension. 02:23Z run 7213, 295 S (test). Skippy did not work here and return errors: Error: Error processing FITS file asPMerge-007213.fit Error locating HDU 1 in FITS file asPMerge-007213.fit Error reading FITS header 1 Field SSCSTATUS (1st occurrence) does not exist Field COLORERR (1st occurrence) does not exist Field COLOR (1st occurrence) does not exist Field SSCSTATUS (1st occurrence) does not exist. Then We decided to switch to stripe 82 which we know catologe works there. Diring the scan, we saw that images degraded. 02:40Z run 7214, 82 N (test). Skippy give the same errors as for run 7213. During the run, we monitored qualitty of images, and found that the quality degraded, but they become better after some frames. In other words, the quality of images are not stable. Cart 6, plt 2825 (segue faint). We applied these offsets (all four combinations), and no luck in finding the FK5. Then, we did spiral Patterns centered at the different combinations of these offsets. The star was found at offsets: ra: -125", dec 44". 05:35Z precalib. one 25 min exposure get S/N^2 of 9.8. 8.3, 11.1, and 10.0 06:15Z cart 7, plt 2840 marvels. When we load cartridge 7, we got error message: SOPGUI: loadCartridge -latest 7 2840 /linuxp/prd/iop/v4_38_0/params/cartridgeInfo.par Loading map: /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-2840-54439-01.par Reading /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-2840-54439-01.par Taking absolute values of GUIDE fiberId Taking absolute values of ALIGNMENT fiberId User supplied cartridge number 7 does not equal plate mapped cartridgeId 8 and telescope would not go anywhere when doing gotofield. I changed cartridgeID in plPlugMapM file to 7, then goto field just worked fine, and we did found a star in guiding fiber # 10, but no stars in others. Then we went to FK5, no luck in finding the star. So we decided to switch to higher priority plate. 06:40Z cart 9, plate 2424 (chunk). Spiral Pattern could not find stars within 1 arc min plus these offsets we applied to cartridge 6. Then to test if the mirrors moved since we observed cartridge 6, we re-mounted cartridge 6 and to see if stars were still there. We did saw stars there with offsets applied before. 07:50Z cart 4, plate 1785 (chunk). Found field with FK5. Offsets were -14", 14" plus offsets (-125, 44) applied in cartrdige 6. The plate was DONE with three exposures, total integration time of 4200 s. 09:30Z cart 2, plt 2853 (segue), SOGTF. After four exposures, we did a mid-calib, then guiding disappeared. And we could not found stars, even with spiralPattern. After 20 min effort, we decided to call it night because it's only 5 min away from twilight. 12:50Z endNight rejoiced.
