APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 25, 2008 (MJD 54491) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden Shannon Watters (afternoon) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o - Some useful signal was obtained on plate 2865, but it was not finished. o - A new pointing model was taken and installed o - Clouds ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All systems checked and working. Spectro focus set for ~-0.5C. Reverted back to old fiducial tables (v1_68) so some spectroscopy could be done before taking another pointing model. The imager bellows pressure is 77 psi, should be 80 psi. Night: ----- Day crew: Thanks for putting the engcam in the cartridge bay. Appreciate it. 01:01Z - We opened at sunset to try to get signal on the partially done seguefaint plate that is setting. The DIMM cover was frozen shut, with beautiful layered ice formations, and we did not try to force it open. 01:22Z - Cartridge 9, plate 2865 - SEGUE faint170. Needed an FK5 plus spiralPattern to find the field during twilight. Two 25 minute exposures were taken, with a pre- and mid-cal. Tonight's lowest (S/N)^2 was 7.3 in r1. Added to previous signal, this plate now has a total (S/N)^2 = 25.9 02:50Z - Engineering camera mounted for a pointing model. We had a delay during setup which turned out to be an A2S problem (we are pretty sure). We first thought that we had a hidden character in the PXL driver name window, but the problem was resolved when the eng cam electronics were power-cycled. Clouds started approaching from the southwest, so we chose a shorter 40-point model. Shortly into the model, we recalled that we had not reverted to the latest set of fiducial crossing data, but since the humidity was climbing and the clouds were getting worse, we did not think we had time to stop and change the fiducial tables. By the end of the pointing model data collection, the humidity had stabilized, and we could still see FK5 stars, so we decided to take another 40 point model with the new tables installed. As a result, there are two pointing model data files with the same date. The clouds and Moon were bad enough that we were not using good science time to do this. The results of the second model follow: With all terms fixed (raw comparison of old & new models): Read 41 data points * fix * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE -146.50 2 IA -145.13 3 PZZ1 -127.27 4 AN +9.50 5 AW -10.40 6 CA +11.28 7 HWCA2 -0.20 8 HWSA2 -0.16 9 HNCA1 -0.98 10 HNSA1 -0.78 11 ACEC +2.09 12 ACES -0.96 13 TX -8.11 Sky RMS = 14.53 Popn SD = 14.53 With the significant (alt-az telescope) terms allowed to vary: use ie ia pzz1 an aw ca * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE -7.831 -154.33 0.643 2 IA +7.571 -137.56 1.036 3 PZZ1 -5.689 -132.96 0.768 4 AN -2.264 +7.23 0.259 5 AW -1.424 -11.83 0.259 6 CA +8.482 +19.76 0.738 7 HWCA2 -0.20 8 HWSA2 -0.16 9 HNCA1 -0.98 10 HNSA1 -0.78 11 ACEC +2.09 12 ACES -0.96 13 TX -8.11 Sky RMS = 1.43 Popn SD = 1.55 With all terms allowed to vary: * use * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE -1.452 -155.78 0.936 2 IA -0.265 -137.83 0.966 3 PZZ1 -4.525 -137.49 2.978 4 AN -0.206 +7.03 0.313 5 AW +0.117 -11.71 0.303 6 CA +0.337 +20.09 0.726 7 HWCA2 +0.350 +0.15 0.397 8 HWSA2 +0.100 -0.06 0.413 9 HNCA1 +0.801 -0.18 0.473 10 HNSA1 -0.420 -1.20 0.469 11 ACEC +0.240 +2.33 0.540 12 ACES +0.739 -0.22 0.551 13 TX +2.135 -5.98 1.372 Sky RMS = 1.30 Popn SD = 1.57 This model; 20080126.DAT;2 was loaded. Note that after the MCP reboot that loaded the new fiducial tables, we lost communication with the M2 MIGs. After a press of the MIG reboot button, communications were restored. This was not done until after the pointing model was completed. 07:03Z - Removed engineering camera and mounted a cartridge. 07:25Z - Cartridge 4, plate 2890 - SEGUE179 GSOGTF with offsets cleared. Clouds had increased during the instrument change, and we could not get efficiency > 20%. We waited. 09:11Z - Clouds were worse, with little prospect of improving. We closed, but kept the building ventilation going. 12:00Z - The clouds beat us. We closed. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7299 22:27Z 22:53Z 100 O 170.48 -183.02 58 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 49291, plate -9999 ------- 22:28 49291 0.0 bias ----- sequence 49292, plate 2659 ------- 22:33 49292 10.0 flat 22:35 49293 2.0 arc 22:39 49294 2.0 arc 22:41 49295 3.0 arc ----- sequence 49296, plate -9999 ------- 00:37 49296 0.0 bias 00:54 49297 0.0 bias ----- sequence 49298, plate 2865 ------- 01:35 49298 10.0 flat 01:37 49299 2.0 arc 02:07 49300 1500.0 target 02:10 49301 10.0 flat 02:13 49302 2.0 arc 02:43 49303 1501.0 target ----- sequence 49304, plate 2890 ------- 07:37 49304 10.0 flat 07:40 49305 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:43Z 9 2865 -27.14 0.0040 43.99 0.0008 157.13 0.0218 1.000160 02:23Z 9 2865 -38.96 0.0036 39.36 0.0007 147.61 0.0161 1.000130 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:43Z 9 2865 1.00016 -1580 243 350 -27 44.0 -2.3 10 295 -- 1.5 02:23Z 9 2865 1.00013 -1284 391 235 -39 39.4 -1.9 11 303 -- 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:25Z 28 14 8 268 (W) 554 - partly cloudy 20:57Z 29 12 5 0 (N) 505 - ' 21:28Z 31 17 5 269 (W) 515 - ' 22:00Z 31 13 8 310 (NW) 482 - ' 22:31Z 30 12 9 297 (WNW) 515 - ' 23:01Z 32 9 6 269 (W) 442 - ' 23:32Z 30 15 4 272 (W) 509 - ' 00:03Z 29 12 6 275 (W) 445 - ' 00:35Z 27 10 8 325 (NW) 422 - ' 01:18Z 28 9 10 301 (WNW) 399 - ' 01:48Z 28 10 10 299 (WNW) 403 - ' 02:18Z 28 10 5 295 (WNW) 375 - ' 02:48Z 28 10 12 303 (WNW) 386 - ' 03:18Z 28 15 11 299 (WNW) 382 - ' 03:48Z 27 17 4 288 (WNW) 447 - ' 04:20Z 28 18 9 297 (WNW) 467 - ' 04:50Z 27 19 6 285 (WNW) 389 - ' 05:20Z 27 19 8 322 (NW) 419 - ' 05:50Z 27 16 9 343 (NNW) 358 - ' 06:21Z 27 15 8 297 (WNW) 345 - ' 06:51Z 29 11 18 323 (NW) 345 - ' 07:23Z 29 15 15 334 (NNW) 280 - mostly cloudy 07:55Z 29 14 14 329 (NNW) 284 - ' 08:27Z 28 15 13 334 (NNW) 307 - ' 08:59Z 29 18 14 324 (NW) 288 - ' 09:31Z 29 18 8 283 (WNW) 287 - ' 10:02Z 28 18 11 305 (NW) 277 - ' 10:34Z 29 18 8 316 (NW) 245 - ' 11:06Z 28 18 8 333 (NNW) 258 - ' 11:38Z 29 17 12 336 (NNW) 250 - ' 12:12Z 29 14 6 344 (NNW) 257 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00 Doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:35 Enclosure off. 09:11Z Building closed; doors open; ventilation on. 12:00Z Ventilation off.
