APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday February 18, 2008 (MJD 54515) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Steph Snedden swatters (afternoon) Jon Brinkmann - support ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BrightTimeScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spent the night battling clouds and Moon. We took a lot of spectro exposures with red Son-of-Spectro sky values. Hopefully, some of the SEGUE bright exposures will be useful. We will ask for one plate that we think is done to be replugged, and will ask for feedback on another. Note to the observers: The plate database has been updated with old plates that fill the void during first half and need to be re-observed. These are Legacy plates and have higher priority than SEGUE plates right now. Please have them plugged when the Moon permits it. Two first-half SEGUE bright plates that can be re-observed have also been added to the database. Jon resolved the ad2 problem during the early evening. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All systems checked. The imager is still down because of last nights ad2 problem. The MIG values are horribly off so we homed and relaxed both M1 and M2. Spectro focus set for ~0.3C Night: ----- Jon found a large-ish lint ball in the power supply to the astrometric disk drives and re-checked the connectors. After all that, ad2's pool disk came back up properly. A bias was run and looked normal. Problem solved, we sincerely hope. 01:34Z - Cartridge 4, plate 2939 - SEGUE bright FK5 needed to find the field. Clouds and seeing were variable. Seeing ranged between 1.5 - 2.0 asec at the beginning. All of tonight's data show red sky values in SoS, but we continued to take exposures since these frames can potentially be useful for sky calibration studies. This plate has previous signal from the dark run plus a plethora of moony observations, so we think it is done. However, since the next two nights are engineering, we don't need it to be replugged tomorrow. This will give Brian more time to respond with the pipeline results. Tonight we took a total of 9600s worth of moony exposures, the last two of which were taken under lower efficiency conditions, and won't add much to the S/N, but may be good for the sky calibration study. 05:41Z - Cartridge 7, plate 2893 - SEGUE Bright GSOGTF, but efficiency less than 20 percent, so we waited for thinner clouds. 06:35Z - The clouds thinned out enough that we started observations. Used a total exposure time of 5700 s, but high sky values and low S/N (all < 2) indicate this plate is not yet done. 09:00Z - Cartridge 1, plate 2151 - Legacy chunk 112 Needed an FK5 to find the field. Took six 1200s exposures, all of which had (S/N)^2 < 2 and red sky values. All were declared bad. The combination of Moon and cloud is killing us, and looks to stay that way until twilight. We give up. endNight rejoiced (after the gangs from the evening bias were forced over by a new teamster). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7339 01:07Z 01:43Z 100 O -125.77 -116.73 74 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 50151, plate -9999 ------- See 22:47 50151 0.0 bias ----- sequence 50152, plate 2939 ------- SoS 23:17 50152 10.0 flat 23:19 50153 2.0 arc for 23:22 50154 3.0 arc 23:25 50155 3.0 arc S/N ----- sequence 50156, plate -9999 ------- 00:17 50156 0.0 bias ! 00:28 50157 0.0 bias ----- sequence 50158, plate 2939 ------- ! 02:05 50158 10.0 flat 02:07 50159 2.0 arc ! 02:26 50160 900.0 target 02:49 50161 1200.0 target 03:13 50162 1200.0 target 03:36 50163 1201.0 target 03:59 50164 1201.0 target 04:22 50165 1201.0 target 04:44 50166 1200.0 target 04:48 50167 10.0 flat 04:50 50168 2.0 arc 05:11 50169 901.0 target 05:25 50170 600.0 target 05:29 50171 10.0 flat 05:31 50172 2.0 arc ----- sequence 50173, plate 2893 ------- 06:43 50173 10.0 flat 06:46 50174 2.0 arc 07:10 50175 1203.0 target 07:33 50176 1200.0 target 08:01 50177 1500.0 target 08:04 50178 10.0 flat 08:07 50179 2.0 arc 08:25 50180 901.0 target 08:43 50181 900.0 target 08:46 50182 10.0 flat 08:49 50183 2.0 arc ----- sequence 50184, plate 2151 ------- 09:07 50184 10.0 flat 09:10 50185 2.0 arc 09:34 50186 1201.0 target 09:57 50187 1201.0 target 10:20 50188 1200.0 target 10:43 50189 1200.0 target 11:06 50190 1200.0 target 11:13 50191 10.0 flat 11:16 50192 2.0 arc 11:42 50193 1201.0 target 11:47 50194 10.0 flat 11:49 50195 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:13Z 4 2939 156.35 0.0022 48.94 0.0030 -56.17 0.0081 1.000100 06:58Z 7 2893 75.97 0.0002 56.68 0.0050 240.14 0.0156 1.000200 09:13Z 1 2151 94.20 0.0018 51.06 0.0020 250.72 0.0162 1.000030 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:13Z 4 2939 1.00010 -988 417 50 156 48.9 3.2 4 0 - 1.8 06:58Z 7 2893 1.00020 -1975 -473 0 76 56.7 3.6 5 280 - 1.3 09:13Z 1 2151 1.00003 -296 932 0 94 51.0 2.8 8 274 - 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:31Z 39 6 4 0 (N) 738 - mostly cloudy 23:04Z 38 5 0 158 (SSE) 747 - ' 23:35Z 37 5 2 4 (N) 802 - ' 00:05Z 36 5 9 17 (NNE) 736 - ' 00:36Z 36 5 12 20 (NNE) 815 - ' 01:36Z 36 3 4 9 (N) 807 - ' 02:06Z 37 4 7 355 (NNW) 660 - ' 02:36Z 37 4 1 296 (WNW) 637 - ' 03:07Z 38 4 10 312 (NW) 609 - ' 03:37Z 38 4 8 332 (NNW) 581 - ' 04:08Z 38 4 5 335 (NNW) 545 - ' 04:38Z 38 4 3 266 (W) 638 - ' 05:09Z 37 2 1 317 (NW) 487 - ' 05:40Z 37 5 6 309 (NW) 635 - ' 06:11Z 37 2 0 248 (WSW) 749 - ' 06:41Z 37 3 5 279 (W) 784 - ' 07:11Z 38 3 6 274 (W) 779 - ' 07:43Z 38 3 5 261 (W) 783 - ' 08:14Z 39 1 8 268 (W) 796 - ' 08:46Z 38 1 8 278 (W) 1079 - ' 09:16Z 37 2 5 294 (WNW) 1122 - ' 09:47Z 37 3 5 267 (W) 1098 - ' 10:20Z 37 4 2 260 (W) 1090 - ' 10:52Z 38 2 2 243 (WSW) 1043 - ' 11:25Z 38 0 9 257 (WSW) 1074 - ' 11:57Z 37 4 6 264 (W) 1059 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:45Z Fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:45Z Doors opened. 01:10Z Opened enclosure 12:05Z Closed enclosure, ventilation off. 12:16Z Telescope stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 1 mounted.
