APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday February 23, 2008 (MJD 54520) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (dayShift) Kaike Pan Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Four plates observed in variably cloudy conditions with lots of moon. Two of the plates are almost done, but scattered moonlight kept us from finishing any of the plates. id1 went down while doing nothing (see problems section). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems were discovered during the checkout. The spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; it's set for about -3.0 C. The collimate numbers are posted in the Problems Section. The imager dewar was changed. Disk space on /data and /files was good; see number below: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 125G 9.8G 93% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 566G 305G 65% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 531G 863G 39% /files iccSoundOff stated that all crates are available; see Problem Section for commands's output. 23:45Z - Ventilation started Night: ------ Opened to mostly clear skies for spectroscopy. Spectrograph focus was changed by +4000 on the actuators to match early night temps. 00:15Z - Cartridge 9, plate 2942 - SEGUE faint GSOGTF This cartridge has signal from the previous dark run. We were able to get three 1500 s exposures tonight before it went to too low an altitude. One more good night should finish the plate. 03:39Z - Cartridge 4, plate 2887 - SEGUE bright GSOGTF This is the plate with the faint guide stars, so we used a guider exposures of 30 s. This plate has already been observed, but was put back into the database for additional observations. The plate was observed for one 1200s and five 900s exposures, and will only need one more good exposure to be done. 06:08Z 0 Cartridge 7, plate 2893 - SEGUE bright Needed an FK5 and a spiralPattern to find the field. This plate has a lot of moon (3.0 zappas), but is the best we have available for this time slot tonight. We will give it a try. 06:33Z - Kaike's guider SAODisplay stopped updating and had to be restarted. We then had clouds and scattered moonlight that pushed our efficiency to low levels, so we waited. 06:33Z - We noted that the watcher servers stopped responding. See the problems section. 07:08Z - Efficiency was a little higher, so we tried cart 7 again. We got red sky values. The Moon plus cloud was too much, but we continued on since these exposures may still be useful when combined with less moony exposures yet to be taken. Clouds gradually increased while this plate was observed. Ten 900s exposures weretaken, none of which had (S/N)^2 > 2, so the plate is not done. 10:45Z - Cartridge 6, plate 2808 - SEGUE bright GSOGTF Again, the Moon and clouds were a problem. These exposures can hopefully be added to future ones taken in better conditions. Five 900s exposures were taken, but the plate is not done. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7342 20:22Z 20:42Z 100 O 167.81 172.81 47 ignore 7343 20:43Z 21:17Z 100 O 173.07 -178.38 71 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 50239, plate 2893 ------- S/N 20:27 50239 0.0 bias info 20:31 50240 10.0 flat is 20:33 50241 2.0 arc in 20:44 50242 3.0 arc SoS 20:47 50243 3.0 arc archive ----- sequence 50244, plate 2942 ------- 00:18 50244 0.0 bias 01:04 50245 10.0 flat 01:06 50246 2.0 arc 01:28 50247 10.0 flat 01:30 50248 2.0 arc 01:56 50249 10.0 flat 01:59 50250 2.0 arc 02:28 50251 1501.0 target 02:56 50252 1501.0 target 03:24 50253 1501.0 target 03:27 50254 10.0 flat 03:29 50255 2.0 arc ----- sequence 50256, plate 2887 ------- 03:50 50256 10.0 flat 03:53 50257 2.0 arc 04:16 50258 1200.0 target 04:34 50259 901.0 target 04:52 50260 900.0 target 05:10 50261 901.0 target 05:13 50262 10.0 flat 05:15 50263 2.0 arc 05:33 50264 900.0 target 05:51 50265 901.0 target 05:55 50266 10.0 flat 05:57 50267 2.0 arc ----- sequence 50268, plate 2893 ------- 07:14 50268 10.0 flat 07:17 50269 2.0 arc 07:35 50270 901.0 target 07:53 50271 900.0 target 08:11 50272 901.0 target 08:29 50273 901.0 target 08:47 50274 901.0 target 09:05 50275 900.0 target 09:08 50276 10.0 flat 09:10 50277 2.0 arc 09:36 50278 901.0 target 09:53 50279 901.0 target 10:11 50280 901.0 target 10:29 50281 900.0 target 10:32 50282 10.0 flat 10:35 50283 2.0 arc ----- sequence 50284, plate 2808 ------- 10:53 50284 10.0 flat 10:56 50285 2.0 arc 11:14 50286 900.0 target 11:32 50287 900.0 target 11:50 50288 901.0 target 12:08 50289 901.0 target 12:26 50290 900.0 target 12:29 50291 10.0 flat 12:32 50292 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:04Z 9 2942 -11.51 -0.0006 50.94 0.0045 170.32 0.0220 1.000240 04:06Z 4 2887 -63.63 -0.0025 71.73 0.0039 124.87 0.0245 1.000130 07:19Z 7 2893 65.27 0.0011 64.84 0.0047 234.29 0.0210 1.000150 11:13Z 6 2808 93.30 0.0046 55.80 0.0054 252.45 0.0185 1.000160 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:04Z 9 2942 1.00024 -2370 -634 150 -11 50.9 2.5 14 309 -- 2.0" 04:06Z 4 2887 1.00013 -1284 161 95 -64 71.7 2.0 17 311 -- 1.7" 07:19Z 7 2893 1.00015 -1481 -115 -30 65 64.8 2.8 8 343 -- 1.4" 11:13Z 6 2808 1.00016 -1580 -64 80 93 55.8 3.3 9 17 -- 1.6" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 19:15Z 35 23 18 253 (WSW) 889 - mostly clear 19:47Z 36 24 8 240 (WSW) 915 - ' 20:18Z 41 26 19 252 (WSW) 1038 - ' 20:51Z 40 24 21 254 (WSW) 1167 - ' 21:22Z 40 23 13 213 (SSW) 1261 - ' 21:52Z 43 24 13 269 (W) 1466 - ' 22:24Z 41 20 15 265 (W) 1106 - ' 22:56Z 42 21 16 262 (W) 1142 - ' 23:28Z 41 19 12 295 (WNW) 994 - ' 00:26Z 38 17 11 291 (WNW) 693 - ' 00:56Z 37 17 9 336 (NNW) 657 - ' 01:27Z 36 16 11 315 (NW) 604 - ' 01:59Z 36 17 11 313 (NW) 724 - ' 02:30Z 36 17 13 311 (NW) 701 - ' 03:00Z 36 17 13 310 (NW) 743 - ' 03:31Z 36 17 11 338 (NNW) 811 - ' 04:05Z 35 16 7 312 (NW) 796 - ' 04:36Z 35 15 10 7 (N) 884 - ' 05:07Z 35 13 11 344 (NNW) 818 - partly cloudy 05:38Z 36 10 12 324 (NW) 805 - ' 06:10Z 36 7 19 349 (NNW) 746 - ' 06:40Z 37 7 11 340 (NNW) 740 - ' 07:11Z 37 8 10 342 (NNW) 681 - ' 07:41Z 37 7 6 4 (N) 610 - ' 08:13Z 40 -6 10 1 (N) 496 - ' 08:44Z 40 -5 8 348 (NNW) 395 - ' 09:14Z 39 -6 13 326 (NW) 294 - ' 09:46Z 38 1 5 72 (ENE) 567 - ' 10:16Z 38 1 5 344 (NNW) 496 - ' 10:47Z 38 6 12 349 (NNW) 640 - ' 11:18Z 38 3 5 32 (NNE) 611 - ' 11:49Z 39 4 7 14 (NNE) 284 - ' 12:19Z 40 1 6 353 (NNW) 248 - ' 12:51Z 39 -5 15 349 (NNW) 257 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:45Z - Doors and louvers open, fans on. 01:00Z - Enclosure off. 12:47Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off. A start_servers -K did not start the master server properly (its window appeared, then disappeared). We then noticed that id1 was not available (as seen in the "im" watcher server window, and in an iccSoundOff), so we rebooted photo crate 1 and restarted the servers. This time, all servers came up properly. ---=== Spectro Collimate Numbers ===--- IDL 5.5a> collimate, 50242 Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-b1-00050242.fit Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-b1-00050243.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.62 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 1.19 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.44 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.34 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -12.1 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: (if red is already in focus) Log file = Collimate-54520-b1-00050242.log PostScript file = Collimate-54520-b1-00050242.ps Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-b2-00050242.fit Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-b2-00050243.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = 0.08 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.75 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.14 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.57 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -20.3 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: (if red is already in focus) Log file = Collimate-54520-b2-00050242.log PostScript file = Collimate-54520-b2-00050242.ps Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-r1-00050242.fit Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-r1-00050243.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.98 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = -0.08 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.27 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.57 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r1 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 5240 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Issue SOP command: "sp1; mechPiston 5240" Log file = Collimate-54520-r1-00050242.log PostScript file = Collimate-54520-r1-00050242.ps Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-r2-00050242.fit Reading /data/spectro/54520/sdR-r2-00050243.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -1.30 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = -0.22 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.27 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.68 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r2 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 6191 steps for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Issue SOP command: "sp2; mechPiston 6191" Log file = Collimate-54520-r2-00050242.log PostScript file = Collimate-54520-r2-00050242.ps % Program caused arithmetic error: Floating illegal operand IDL 5.5a> im> iccSoundOff ICC ad1 is available (node sdssad1, crate 3, board 0) ICC ad2 is available (node sdssad2, crate 3, board 1) ICC ad3 is available (node sdssad3, crate 3, board 2) ICC ad4 is available (node sdssad4, crate 3, board 3) ICC id1 is available (node sdssid1, crate 1, board 0) ICC id2 is available (node sdssid2, crate 1, board 1) ICC id3 is available (node sdssid3, crate 1, board 2) ICC id4 is available (node sdssid4, crate 2, board 0) ICC id5 is available (node sdssid5, crate 2, board 1) ICC id6 is available (node sdssid6, crate 2, board 2) ICC md1 is available (node sdssmd1, crate 11, board 0) ICC sd1 is available (node sdsssd1, crate 4, board 0) im> Today's Bias Report: ------------------- Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00050244.fit -5.2 -4.1 -2.8 2.4 6.9 8.7 10.2 sdR-b2-00050244.fit -8.5 -6.5 -4.8 1.4 7.5 8.8 11.2 sdR-r1-00050244.fit -7.0 -5.4 -3.8 1.6 7.1 9.3 10.6 sdR-r2-00050244.fit -7.5 -5.4 -4.1 1.1 7.2 8.5 10.6
