APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 10, 2008 (MJD 54536) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (dayShift) Viktor Malanushenko (observer) Elena Malanushenko (observer) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Telescope vibration problem; see afternoon checkout. We had photometric sky and good seeing during the fist part of night but had clouds and nearby radar return after 5 pm and we could not observe after 8:30. Finished cart 3 plate 2871, segueFaint. We observer cart 5 plate 2959 (do not have useful signal) and cart 2 plate 2919. We need to disable 5 fibers on baotest plate 2959 as there are no stars there. It's efficiency is very low even at photometric conditions. And 30 min exposure gave s/n < 2. Do we need more information how to observe baotest plates? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- During the checkout, when doing test slews, I noticed that the 2.5-meter telescope had a very bad vibration when moved in Az and Rot with the following commands: scope position: 121,90,40 TCC> track 151, 90 mount /rota=00 /rotty=mount scope position: 151,90,00 TCC> track 121, 90 mount /rota=40 /rotty=mount The vibration only occurred when slews were done at the same time with Az and Rot. The vibration was greatest at the end of the slews. I talked with Dan Long about the problem. He said that he would check it tomorrow (Tuesday) and that he thought the scope was safe to use. The spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; it's set for about 0.0 degrees C. The spectro numbers via collimate are posted in the Problems Section. The disk space at /data and /files was good; see below: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 127G 8.1G 95% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 601G 271G 69% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 537G 857G 39% /files iccSoundOff responded that all crates were available; see Problems Section for command's output. 00:15Z - Doors and louvers opened, fans on. Night: ------ Opened 1:15Z T=0.5C, wind 8 mph, humidity 30% Cart 5, plate 2959, baotest, Used FK5, seeing ~1.6", foc=150. Efficiency ~20% (is low efficiency usual for this plate ?) Disabled fibers 1,2,4,5,7 as we did not see the guider stars there but could see hat hot pixels. 2:07 precal - ok 2:14 science 1500 - r2=0.7, bad 2:42 science 1800 - r2=0.8, bad By the end of this exposure the seeing increased up to 2.5". We declare both exposures as "bad" because (s/n)^2 <2. Cart 3, plate 2871, segueFaint, previous (s/n)^2=26.4 FSonGTF T~0.5, seeing ~2.5-3.5" and efficiency ~50 3:24 precal 3:31 science 1500 The seeing is better 3:59 science 1500 4:27 science 1500 4:55 postCal 5:02 science 1500-> 1800 We obtained s/n 24.0. We did not do postcal as there was only one exposure after previous postcal. This plate is DONE with (s/n)^2=50.4 based on tonight and previous night observations. Cart 2 plate 2919, segueFaint FSonGTF 5:49 preCalib 5:55 science 1500 Seeing is 1.4", but it began to be cloudy, the efficiency is still 80%. 6:23 science 1500, this exposure was paused at 1224 sec, because of clouds and finally stopped. 6:51 science - we aborted this exposure as the efficience is less then 20%. 7:52 science 1500 - with variable efficiency we finished this exposure with acceptable 5.1 8:20 postcalib 8:30 clouds and nearby radar return forced us to close. Enclosure is on, but keep ventilations. Wait for weather improving. 11:45 endNight 12:00 closed telescope. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7364 22:19Z 22:52Z 100 O -147.05 -138.77 69 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 50899, plate -9999 ------- 22:09 50899 0.0 bias ----- sequence 50900, plate 2959 ------- 22:31 50900 0.0 bias 22:38 50901 10.0 flat 22:40 50902 2.0 arc 22:45 50903 3.0 arc 22:48 50904 3.0 arc ----- sequence 50905, plate -9999 ------- 00:23 50905 0.0 bias 00:31 50906 0.0 bias ----- sequence 50906, plate 2959 ------- 02:10 50907 10.0 flat 02:12 50908 2.0 arc 02:42 50909 1500.0 target 03:15 50910 1802.0 target ----- sequence 50911, plate 2871 ------- 03:27 50911 10.0 flat 03:30 50912 2.0 arc 03:58 50913 1501.0 target 04:26 50914 1501.0 target 04:54 50915 1501.0 target 04:57 50916 10.0 flat 05:00 50917 2.0 arc 05:35 50918 1803.0 target ----- sequence 50919, plate 2919 ------- 05:51 50919 10.0 flat 05:54 50920 2.0 arc 06:22 50921 1501.0 target 06:50 50922 1224.0 target 08:19 50923 1500.0 target 08:22 50924 10.0 flat 08:25 50925 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:29Z 5 2959 91.59 0.0026 74.82 0.0049 261.97 0.0255 1.000030 03:39Z 3 2871 112.57 0.0027 50.37 0.0030 -97.09 0.0310 0.999930 06:08Z 2 2919 139.14 0.0044 64.06 0.0042 -58.65 0.0165 1.000030 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:28Z 5 2959 1.00003 -296 1029 150 92 74.8 0.1 6 178 -- 1.7" 03:39Z 3 2871 0.99993 691 1877 125 113 50.4 0.4 10 205 -- 2.5 06:09Z 2 2919 1.00003 -296 998 100 139 64.1 0.4 16 202 -- 1.4" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:06Z 39 11 4 198 (SSW) 1573 - 22:37Z 38 10 5 271 (W) 1453 - 23:07Z 41 11 6 227 (SW) 1334 - 23:39Z 40 8 7 262 (W) 1186 - 00:11Z 39 7 9 265 (W) 1065 - 00:39Z 37 5 3 193 (SSW) 1083 - 01:11Z 33 5 3 248 (WSW) 1110 - 01:43Z 32 5 5 198 (SSW) 1207 - 02:14Z 32 4 7 178 (S) 1117 - 02:45Z 32 5 8 178 (S) 1189 - 03:15Z 33 4 12 179 (S) 1178 - 03:46Z 32 4 10 182 (S) 1256 - 04:16Z 32 5 13 222 (SW) 1225 - 04:48Z 32 7 13 201 (SSW) 1253 - 05:19Z 32 8 14 202 (SSW) 1465 - 05:49Z 32 8 14 204 (SSW) 1604 - 06:20Z 32 6 16 208 (SSW) 1540 - 06:51Z 32 8 14 209 (SSW) 1663 - 07:21Z 32 8 9 189 (S) 1822 - 07:53Z 32 9 14 216 (SW) 2302 - 08:25Z 32 8 13 213 (SSW) 2138 - 08:58Z 31 9 13 228 (SW) 2051 - 09:30Z 32 9 15 239 (WSW) 2275 - 10:02Z 31 9 14 240 (WSW) 1995 - 10:34Z 31 9 12 247 (WSW) 1882 - 11:06Z 31 8 12 262 (W) 2050 - 11:38Z 31 8 17 268 (W) 1649 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:15Z Doors and louvers open, fans on. 01:15Z Enclosure off. 08:30Z Enclosure is on 12:00Z Doors and louvers closed, fans off.
