APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday March 12, 2008 (MJD 54538) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko Audrey Simmons ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We batteled with clouds for most of the night, but were able to gain signal on the following plates: Cart 5, plate 2959 - FINISHED Cart 9, plate 2961 - (We gained a lot of signal in r2, but practically nothing in r1. Is this acceptable for baotest plates?) Cart 2, plate 2894 Cart 7, plate 2521 - FINISHED No problems. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The spectro focus was checked and adjusted; it's set for about 4.0 degrees C. The spectro numbers via collimate are posted in the Problems Section. Night: ------ 23:59Z - Began ventilating with the doors and louvers open, fans on. 01:12Z - Opened enclosure to clear skies. 01:14Z - Sunset. 01:50Z - goToField using a fk5 star on cart 5, baotest187 plate 2959. 02:08Z - Precals. 02:15Z - 20 min exposure. endStare -aborted since SOS came back with red values in xsigma for the calibrations. We altered the temperature setting by +2.5 degrees C for both spectrographs. Now they are set for 6.5C. 02:22Z - Precals. There are some yellow values, but they are acceptable. 02:29Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.2" 02:31Z - Twilight ends. 02:52Z - 20 min exposure. This plate is decalred DONE. 03:15Z - Switched to cart 9, baotest197 plate 2961. GSFOGTF. 03:25Z - Precals. 03:33Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.7". Clouds moved in, which caused our efficiency to drop. 04:01Z - 25 min exposure. 04:29Z - 25 min exposure. The exposure was paused for 1-2 minutes, during which the telescope tracked at an altitude 89.7 degrees and above (zenith avoidance). 05:08Z - 25 min exposure. We gained a S/N value of 11.0 in r2, but practically nothing in r1. Is this acceptable? 05:36Z - Mounted cart 2, segue179 plate 2894. Used fk5 to find field. 05:47Z - Precals. 05:54Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 2.0". Thick clouds came in, forcing us to read out the exposure with endStare -read. Unfortunatly, we did not get enough signal for it to be good. We declared it 'bad' in SOS. 06:25Z - Closed enclosure due to a nearby radar threat (plus we couldnt guide on the field since the clouds were so thick). We left the telescope ventilating. 07:35Z - Opened enclosure since the clouds lightened up for a little period of time, but then they came back again. We waited until they cleared again. 08:01Z - Closed again for low, oragraphic clouds. Kept ventilating. 09:22Z - Opened again because the skies cleared for the most part. Used a fk5 to find field (cart 2, plate 2894) 09:42Z - Precals. 09:49Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.6" 10:11Z - 20 min exposure. 10:40Z - Postcals. SOS came back with a result of 20.9 in b2. Since we are going for the criteria b2>30, one or two more exposures on this plate would enough to declare it done. 10:46Z - Mounted cart 7, chunk145 plate 2521. Used a fk5 star to find field. 10:57Z - Precals. 11:04Z - 15 min exposure. Seeing 1.5" 11:21Z - 15 min exposure. 11:39Z - 25 min exposure. We gained enough signal (+ a little extra) on this plate for it to be declared DONE. 11:54Z - Twilight begins. 12:05Z - Mounted cart 9, baotest187 plate 2961. 12:10Z - Closed enclosure, closed doors and louvers, and turned off fans. 12:27Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7366 23:27Z 23:49Z 100 O -128.08 -122.59 50 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 50970, plate -9999 ------- 23:20 50970 0.0 bias ----- sequence 50971, plate 2521 ------- 23:32 50971 10.0 flat 23:35 50972 2.0 arc 23:38 50973 3.0 arc ----- sequence 50975, plate -9999 ------- 00:21 50975 0.0 bias ----- sequence 50976, plate 2959 ------- 02:11 50976 10.0 flat 02:13 50977 2.0 arc 02:25 50978 10.0 flat 02:27 50979 2.0 arc 02:51 50980 1201.0 target 03:14 50981 1201.0 target ----- sequence 50982, plate 2961 ------- 03:29 50982 10.0 flat 03:31 50983 2.0 arc 04:00 50984 1500.0 target 04:28 50985 1500.0 target 04:56 50986 1501.0 target 05:35 50987 1500.0 target ----- sequence 50988, plate 2894 ------- 05:50 50988 10.0 flat 05:53 50989 2.0 arc 06:10 50990 342.0 target 09:44 50991 10.0 flat 09:47 50992 2.0 arc 10:10 50993 1201.0 target 10:38 50994 1502.0 target 10:42 50995 10.0 flat 10:44 50996 2.0 arc ----- sequence 50997, plate 2521 ------- 11:00 50997 10.0 flat 11:02 50998 2.0 arc 11:21 50999 901.0 target 11:39 51000 900.0 target 12:07 51001 1503.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:39Z 5 2959 89.22 0.0039 78.70 0.0066 262.10 0.0306 1.000200 03:36Z 9 2961 95.52 0.0008 72.76 0.0053 -95.63 0.0359 1.000020 04:54Z 9 2961 89.44 0.0008 89.24 0.0053 -91.05 0.0359 0.999940 06:32Z 2 2894 121.00 0.0048 29.98 0.0048 0.00 0.0359 1.000140 09:54Z 2 2894 224.50 0.0031 60.78 0.0020 66.25 0.0202 1.000140 11:06Z 7 2521 22.05 -0.0035 70.99 0.0041 199.00 0.0198 0.999990 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:39Z 5 2959 1.00020 -1975 -340 175 89 78.7 4.9 11 240 - 1.2 03:36Z 9 2961 1.00002 -198 1114 150 96 72.8 5.6 19 242 - 1.7 04:54Z 9 2961 0.99994 593 1654 50 89 89.3 5.2 15 266 - 1.7 06:32Z 2 2894 1.00014 -1383 259 125 121 30.0 4.4 16 292 - 2.0 09:54Z 2 2894 1.00014 -1383 106 100 224 60.8 3.4 8 339 - 1.6 11:06Z 7 2521 0.99999 99 1311 100 22 71.0 2.9 18 311 - 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:52Z 45 6 17 280 (W) 833 - Clear 23:23Z 49 10 2 246 (WSW) 844 - " 23:54Z 46 8 18 294 (WNW) 888 - " 00:24Z 45 8 12 269 (W) 814 - " 00:55Z 44 7 11 268 (W) 899 - " 01:27Z 42 8 8 264 (W) 926 - " 02:01Z 42 9 16 234 (SW) 1045 - " 02:32Z 41 8 13 229 (SW) 993 - " 03:05Z 40 8 15 228 (SW) 954 - " 03:36Z 42 8 19 242 (WSW) 1010 - Cloudy 04:08Z 41 7 21 251 (WSW) 1032 - " 04:39Z 41 6 21 268 (W) 877 - " 05:10Z 40 8 20 270 (W) 1068 - " 05:41Z 39 10 16 268 (W) 1475 - " 06:12Z 40 11 8 273 (W) 1412 - " 06:42Z 39 11 15 295 (WNW) 1379 - " 07:14Z 39 9 8 298 (WNW) 1187 - Partly cloudy 07:46Z 39 8 17 338 (NNW) 992 - Cloudy 08:18Z 40 8 8 6 (N) 751 - " 08:51Z 40 9 4 316 (NW) 640 - " 09:23Z 38 10 8 316 (NW) 652 - Clear 09:54Z 38 11 8 339 (NNW) 675 - Partly cloudy 10:24Z 37 11 14 331 (NNW) 646 - Clear 10:55Z 37 12 11 338 (NNW) 621 - " 11:25Z 37 12 18 322 (NW) 620 - " 11:59Z 36 11 12 324 (NW) 590 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00Z - Doors and louvers open, fans on. 01:12Z - Enclosure off. 12:10Z - Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off.
