APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 28, 2008 (MJD 54554) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko (observer) Steph Snedden (observer) Dmitry Bizyaev (dayshift) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science, naturally, or natural science ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two calibration Neon lamps were unstable during afternoon checkout. They did not always come on, and there was no apparent pattern to the problem (see Dmitry's notes in the problems section). The problem did not affect us during the night. We finished three plates: Cartridge 2 plate 2776 - Legacy Cartridge 6, plate 2918 - 2918 SEGUE faint Cartridge 9, plate 2777 - Legacy And obtained useful signal on: Cartridge 4, plate 2177 - SEGUE bright Cartridge 5, plate 2960 - BAOtest We accumulated about 24,000 dust-hours in low humidity conditions. Please check the mirrors to see if CO2 cleaning is needed. No pollen noted... ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- ntp_check ok iccSoundOff ok no old data to safely remove from HDD Spectro bias looks ok idl> apo_plotbias, 51357 Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00051357.fit -6.0 -3.9 -2.7 2.4 7.2 9.4 10.8 sdR-b2-00051357.fit -8.1 -6.3 -4.4 1.3 7.6 9.1 11.3 sdR-r1-00051357.fit -6.8 -5.7 -3.7 1.9 7.4 9.6 11.7 sdR-r2-00051357.fit -7.3 -5.8 -4.2 1.5 7.4 8.9 11.6 Collimated spectrographs for +8C ambient. 00:16Z ventilation began. Cartridge 5 was mounted. Night: ------ We opened at 01:25Z to mostly clear skies with a fair amount of haze. 02:17Z - Cartridge 5, plate 2960 - BAOtest ------------------------------------------ Needed an FK5 in bright twilight with long exposure times to find a glint. The initial offsets were pretty large, but that could be due to the high tracking rates. Disabled fibers 1, 2, 3, 6 (no guide stars) The pre-cal arc read out normally on the monitor, but the frames only showed up on disk when the first science exposure read out. I've personally not seen this kind of delay before. Neither has Jon. However, we thought we had lost the arc, so we had already started a second calibration sequence when the first arc showed up. The second calibration sequence can be ignored. Took three science exposures totaling 4200s before moving on to the next plate. This plate is not yet done. 04:05Z - Cartridge 6, plate 2918 - SEGUE faint ---------------------------------------------- Needed a spiralPattern to find the FK5. This plate was declared done with six exposures totaling 8252 seconds. A mid-cal was taken as well as the usual pre- and post-cal. 07:24Z - Cartridge 2, plate 2776 - Legacy chunk 165 --------------------------------------------------- GSOGTF This plate was declared done in three exposures totaling 3100 s. 08:40Z - Cartridge 9, plate 2777 - Legacy Chunk 165 --------------------------------------------------- GSOGTF Declared done with three exposures totaling 3300 s. 10:02Z - Cartridge 4, plate 2177 - SEGUE bright ----------------------------------------------- Needed an FK5 to find the field. Three exposures totaling 4500 s. were taken, but the plate is not yet done. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7401 22:41Z 23:23Z 100 O -123.82 -113.20 84 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 51357, plate -9999 ------- 22:46 51357 0.0 bias ----- sequence 51358, plate 2177 ------- 23:02 51358 10.0 flat 23:05 51359 2.0 arc 23:14 51360 2.0 arc 23:17 51361 3.0 arc ----- sequence 51362, plate -9999 ------- 00:26 51362 0.0 bias 00:29 51363 0.0 bias ----- sequence 51364, plate 2960 ------- 02:04 51364 10.0 flat 02:06 51365 2.0 arc 02:16 51366 10.0 flat ----- sequence 51364, plate 2960 ------- 02:19 51367 2.0 arc 02:46 51368 1201.0 target 02:49 51369 10.0 flat 02:52 51370 2.0 arc 03:22 51371 1504.0 target 03:59 51372 1500.0 target ----- sequence 51373, plate 2918 ------- 04:23 51373 10.0 flat 04:26 51374 2.0 arc 04:50 51375 1201.0 target 05:12 51376 1200.0 target 05:40 51377 1501.0 target 05:44 51378 10.0 flat 05:46 51379 2.0 arc 06:15 51380 1501.0 target 06:38 51381 1201.0 target 07:09 51382 1652.0 target 07:12 51383 10.0 flat 07:15 51384 2.0 arc ----- sequence 51385, plate 2776 ------- 07:27 51385 10.0 flat 07:30 51386 2.0 arc 07:53 51387 1200.0 target 08:11 51388 902.0 target 08:31 51389 1001.0 target ----- sequence 51390, plate 2777 ------- 08:45 51390 10.0 flat 08:47 51391 2.0 arc 09:06 51392 902.0 target 09:29 51393 1202.0 target 09:51 51394 1201.0 target ----- sequence 51395, plate 2177 ------- 10:07 51395 10.0 flat 10:09 51396 2.0 arc 10:38 51397 1500.0 target 11:06 51398 1501.0 target 11:34 51399 1501.0 target 11:37 51400 10.0 flat 11:40 51401 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:22Z 5 2960 91.00 0.0022 78.32 0.0067 263.54 0.0215 1.000050 03:31Z 5 2960 -79.71 -0.0112 87.12 0.0019 102.12 0.0580 0.999940 04:28Z 6 2918 75.34 0.0033 57.32 0.0064 239.86 0.0118 1.000190 07:32Z 2 2776 65.59 0.0016 62.36 0.0062 233.81 0.0250 1.000160 08:50Z 9 2777 30.25 0.0005 73.42 0.0079 206.35 -0.0286 1.000050 10:13Z 4 2177 29.50 -0.0003 71.85 0.0043 205.54 0.0289 1.000050 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:22Z 5 2960 1.00005 -494 886 175 91 78.3 7.4 15 187 -- 1.2" 03:31Z 5 2960 0.99994 593 1680 75 -80 87.1 8.0 14 199 -- 1.4 04:28Z 6 2918 1.00019 -1876 -394 0 75 57.3 8.1 16 204 -- 1.3 07:32Z 2 2776 1.00016 -1580 -86 75 66 62.3 6.5 19 210 -- 1.5 08:50Z 9 2777 1.00005 -494 767 50 30 73.4 5.6 14 243 -- 1.3 10:13Z 4 2177 1.00005 -494 795 75 30 71.8 4.4 11 259 -- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:04Z 54 17 21 197 (SSW) 1948 - Mostly clear 22:36Z 55 15 19 214 (SW) 1980 - ' 23:06Z 53 16 16 189 (S) 1999 - ' 23:36Z 54 17 18 190 (S) 1854 - ' 00:06Z 51 14 19 190 (S) 1958 - ' 00:38Z 49 17 17 199 (SSW) 2130 - ' 01:18Z 45 16 17 198 (SSW) 2253 - ' 01:48Z 44 15 20 206 (SSW) 2111 - ' 02:19Z 45 12 16 191 (S) 2177 - Clear 02:49Z 46 7 20 202 (SSW) 2051 - ' 03:20Z 46 7 18 195 (SSW) 2208 - ' 03:50Z 46 5 18 206 (SSW) 1943 - ' 04:21Z 46 6 17 203 (SSW) 2011 - ' 04:51Z 46 6 18 224 (SW) 2035 - ' 05:21Z 45 6 16 215 (SW) 2172 - ' 05:53Z 44 10 16 215 (SW) 2250 - ' 06:24Z 44 14 16 194 (SSW) 2193 - ' 06:54Z 44 14 17 204 (SSW) 2170 - ' 07:24Z 43 16 18 213 (SSW) 2130 - ' 07:54Z 42 16 17 237 (WSW) 2243 - ' 08:24Z 41 18 19 238 (WSW) 2088 - ' 08:54Z 41 18 13 243 (WSW) 2282 - ' 09:26Z 41 17 17 229 (SW) 2199 - ' 09:57Z 40 17 16 230 (SW) 2127 - ' 10:27Z 40 17 12 234 (SW) 2143 - ' 10:57Z 40 17 11 241 (WSW) 2154 - ' 11:27Z 39 16 10 258 (WSW) 2218 - ' 11:59Z 40 15 12 267 (W) 1933 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:16Z - Began ventilation. Whn checked at stow, the top left didn't want to come up. Reset of the lamps' power box at the basement didn't help. Note that at the same time the System Status panel in watcher indicates that all lamps are on!! When telescope moved to the zenith, the top left lamp started working good, but at the same time top right lamp doesn't give its light. Moving to some 70 degrees brought all lights on. Watcher doesn't show any problems.
