APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 12, 2008 (MJD 54630) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Steph Snedden Audrey Simmons (swing) Bill Boroski (FNAL) - visitor French Leger - proud father of a fiber coupler prototype ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- No plates definitively finished, but good signal acquired on three plates in clear but moony conditions with very good seeing. One and possibly two plates may actually be done, but we need the pipeline results to know for sure. We have asked to have one plate plugged on an unplugged cartridge just in case, and also ask Brian to contact the pluggers to do the second plate in our plugging request email if it is needed. Dan, the PID loop vibration is back. See the entry for cartridge 5 below. We accumulated about 19,000 "dust-hours" tonight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems during checkout. Spectro collimation set for ~14-15C. 01:20Z - Started ventilating with the doors and louver open, fans on. Night: ------ 02:50Z - Ready for spectroscopy under clear skies with moon until 08:18Z 03:36Z Cartridge 8, plate 2909 - SEGUE bright --------------------------------------------- GSOGTF in twilight Red sky values in SoS because of proximity of Moon. We took three exposures, which will probably be useful, but we will have a lot of Moon the next few nights, and should probably wait to finish this plate early in the next run. 4200s total exposure time, (S/N)^2 = 6.1, 8.8, 4.1, 5.5 05:12Z Cartridge 6, plate 2910 - SEGUE bright --------------------------------------------- Needed an FK5 to find the field. 6300s total exposure time. (S/N)^2 = 5.4, 20.8, 4.4, 19.7 We are pretty sure this plate is not yet done, but will ask Brian for an estimate of how much more he thinks it needs. 07:22Z - A sudden short dust spike occurred. It may not have been real, but it prompted us to go outside and look/smell for smoke. No smoke noted. 07:55Z Cartridge 5, plate 2552 - SEGUE bright --------------------------------------------- At high altitude as we slewed to instChange, I heard the PID loop vibration again. I'm not sure if it was in rotator or azimuth, but I think rotator. The telescope was moving from high to lower azimuth values while it approached zenith when the vibration began. 5700s total exposure time. (S/N)^2=10.7, 8.4, 29.1, 15.0 This plate is borderline done by our criteria. After the full reduction, if it is done, Brian should contact the pluggers re. the replacement plate that we chose. Needed a spiralPattern to find the field. We were at first fooled by another bright star near the FK5 that we centered on, then could not find guide stars. On a second try, we found the real FK5, but again did not see guide stars. We then centered the FK5 in fiber 11, and this time when we went back to the field, we had guide stars. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7554 23:58Z 00:20Z 100 O -29.68 -24.05 51 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 53533, plate -9999 ------- see SoS archive 00:00 53533 0.0 bias That's why we ----- sequence 53534, plate 2911 ------- have it. 00:11 53534 10.0 flat 00:13 53535 2.0 arc 00:16 53536 3.0 arc 00:19 53537 3.0 arc 00:27 53538 3.0 arc 00:30 53539 3.0 arc ----- sequence 53540, plate -9999 ------- 01:56 53540 0.0 bias 02:01 53541 0.0 bias ----- sequence 53542, plate 2909 ------- 03:12 53542 10.0 flat 03:15 53543 2.0 arc 03:34 53544 10.0 flat 03:37 53545 2.0 arc 04:02 53546 1200.0 target 04:30 53547 1500.0 target 04:58 53548 1501.0 target 05:01 53549 10.0 flat 05:03 53550 2.0 arc ----- sequence 53551, plate 2910 ------- 05:24 53551 10.0 flat 05:26 53552 2.0 arc 05:54 53553 1500.0 target 06:17 53554 1202.0 target 06:24 53555 224.0 target 06:47 53556 1201.0 target 06:51 53557 10.0 flat 06:53 53558 2.0 arc 07:17 53559 1201.0 target 07:40 53560 1200.0 target 07:43 53561 10.0 flat 07:45 53562 2.0 arc ----- sequence 53563, plate 2552 ------- 08:33 53563 10.0 flat 08:35 53564 2.0 arc 08:59 53565 1200.0 target 09:22 53566 1200.0 target 09:51 53567 1501.0 target 09:54 53568 10.0 flat 09:57 53569 2.0 arc 10:30 53570 1800.0 target 10:33 53571 10.0 flat 10:36 53572 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:52Z 8 2909 14.65 -0.0001 56.34 0.0046 192.22 0.0242 1.000160 05:38Z 6 2910 269.03 -0.0243 78.01 0.0030 96.56 -0.0760 1.000320 06:57Z 6 2910 261.83 -0.0243 61.48 0.0030 100.34 -0.0760 1.000320 08:39Z 5 2552 185.96 0.0047 58.33 0.0038 11.46 0.0091 1.000220 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:52Z 8 2909 1.00016 -1580 -396 -250 15 56.3 17.3 15 226 -- 1.6" 05:38Z 6 2910 1.00032 -3160 -1671 -175 269 78.0 16.7 12 216 -- 1.4 06:57Z 6 2910 1.00032 -3160 -1668 -200 262 61.5 16.3 8 264 -- 1.3 08:39Z 5 2552 1.00022 -2173 -791 -150 186 58.3 16.3 7 309 -- 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:47Z 71 20 15 256 (WSW) 2357 - clear 00:17Z 71 18 20 245 (WSW) 2297 - ' 00:48Z 71 18 12 267 (W) 2150 - ' 01:20Z 68 14 16 268 (W) 1890 - ' 02:01Z 66 14 14 240 (WSW) 1937 - ' 02:32Z 64 12 17 218 (SW) 2106 - ' 03:03Z 63 11 15 227 (SW) 1859 - ' 03:33Z 63 10 12 227 (SW) 1741 - ' 04:04Z 63 10 11 222 (SW) 1784 - ' 04:34Z 62 10 16 235 (SW) 1657 - ' 05:05Z 62 10 14 229 (SW) 1532 - ' 05:36Z 62 12 11 222 (SW) 1656 - ' 06:06Z 61 12 6 262 (W) 1802 - ' 06:38Z 61 14 8 263 (W) 1847 - ' 07:10Z 61 15 12 265 (W) 1929 - ' 07:41Z 60 15 6 264 (W) 2029 - ' 08:11Z 60 14 6 269 (W) 1983 - ' 08:42Z 61 9 7 307 (NW) 2006 - ' 09:13Z 61 10 2 359 (NNW) 2022 - ' 09:45Z 61 10 2 9 (N) 1967 - ' 10:15Z 62 10 8 34 (NE) 2122 - ' 10:45Z 62 10 10 53 (NE) 2256 - ' 11:15Z 61 10 4 345 (NNW) 2324 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:20Z - Began ventilation.
