APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday July 20, 2008 (MJD 54668) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden Visitors: Ben Weaver (NYU) Larry Carey (UW) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MonsoonScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We managed to observe the A pointing of plate 3020, although we had to battle clouds. A few more exposures of this field would be a good thing. The rest of the night was lost to clouds and humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems during afternoon checkout. Spectro focus was set for 14C. Night: ----- Nearby radar return and reports of rain south of Cloudcroft kept us closed, even though a nice sucker hole opened up at sunset. Very frustrating, since the radar echo persisted and did not move. Humidity gradually rose while we waited. 05:23Z - The radar return decreased enough that we felt it was safe to open, and humidity was still acceptable. Cart 7, plate 3020 - MARVELS pre-selection dual-pointing plate 05:46Z - field A: FK5 on the edge of fiber 10 Note: the guide stars on this field seem to be a normal brightness. Scale error varied by .005 06:06Z - One seven second exposure (54191) taken before clouds came in. 06:19Z - Resumed seven second exposures for four more exposures. All were taken in varying amounts of cloud. The last exposure, 54195, is especially bad. 06:32Z - Waited on clouds again. 07:04Z - Took one more seven second exposure (54196). 07:07Z - Started 12 second exposure sequence 54197 (good), 54198 (clouds), 54199 (good), 54200 (clouds) 07:31Z - flat and arc while waiting on clouds (54201, 54202) 08:03Z - 12-second exposures 54203 (good), 54204 (good), 54205 (good) 08:11Z - 15 second exposures 54206 (clouds) 08:30Z - flat and arc while waiting on clouds (54207, 54208) Although we could use a better sequence for the faint stars, we will call field A done. However, if conditions permit over the next two nights, we will try for a better 12-second sequence. 09:00Z - Humidity at closure limit; overcast sky. We closed. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 01:10 54184 0.0 bias ----- sequence 54185, plate 3020 ------- 01:19 54185 10.0 flat 01:24 54187 3.0 arc 01:27 54188 3.0 arc 05:54 54189 10.0 flat 05:57 54190 2.0 arc 06:01 54191 7.0 target 06:20 54192 8.0 target 06:23 54193 8.0 target 06:26 54194 7.0 target 06:29 54195 8.0 target 07:06 54196 8.0 target 07:10 54197 13.0 target 07:13 54198 13.0 target 07:23 54199 13.0 target 07:26 54200 12.0 target 07:32 54201 10.0 flat 07:35 54202 2.0 arc 08:04 54203 13.0 target 08:08 54204 13.0 target 08:11 54205 13.0 target 08:14 54206 15.0 target 08:31 54207 10.0 flat 08:33 54208 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:51Z 7 3020 224.07 0.0017 76.29 0.0012 51.81 0.0140 1.000060 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:51Z 7 3020 1.00006 -593 507 -125 224 76.3 13.3 17 136 -- 1.5" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:47Z 62 47 1 258 (WSW) 1517 - mostly cloudy 01:18Z 60 46 8 189 (S) 1690 - ' 01:49Z 60 47 7 151 (SSE) 1760 - ' 02:20Z 58 47 16 130 (SE) 1774 - ' 02:52Z 57 45 13 131 (SE) 1816 - ' 03:24Z 56 45 18 124 (SE) 1804 - ' 03:56Z 55 47 14 113 (ESE) 2191 - ' 04:28Z 55 48 14 120 (ESE) 2293 - ' 05:00Z 55 47 15 111 (ESE) 2071 - ' 05:32Z 56 47 20 128 (SE) 2140 - ' 06:02Z 56 47 16 132 (SE) 1959 - ' 06:33Z 55 47 13 118 (ESE) 1873 - ' 07:05Z 55 48 18 132 (SE) 1871 - ' 07:36Z 54 48 18 156 (SSE) 1768 - ' 08:09Z 54 48 14 168 (SSE) 1830 - ' 08:41Z 54 49 12 177 (S) 1794 - ' 09:13Z 54 49 10 181 (S) 1925 - ' 09:46Z 53 49 10 155 (SSE) 1821 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:00Z - Started ventilation; doors opened. 05:23Z - Opened enclosure. 09:00Z - Closed enclosure.
