APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday August 31, 2008 (MJD 54710) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz Paul Harding (guider) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Full-field optical collimation and pointing model. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had trouble with the galils communication (see log). Homed and relaxed the mirrors. Weather kept us closed again. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Restarted the servers. ad3 was not available according to iccSoundOff and initNight failed as a result, so we rebooted the crates and everything came back normal and responsive. sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu % df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 112G 23G 83% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 648G 223G 75% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 598G 795G 43% /files Spectro focus set for ~12C (sp1) and ~11C (sp2). See Problems section. French and Paul removed the guider in order to install a few spring-loaded push screws to prevent lens flexure. During the fiducials check, we heard a humming sound from the rotator during the slew from 121,90,00 to 121,90,30 at around 27 degrees or so. We tried it again and heard the same noise when the rotator was near about 27 degrees again. We checked with French and he is familiar with this noise and attributes it to the rotator deceleration when the telescope is pointed at zenith. When we tried taking mirror numbers (both from the log with the "Mirrors" button and from an IOP session), we received the following reply: im> Timed out waiting for the TCC to respond We are missing: SecCmdMount SecActMount SecOrient We exited the TCC interpreter to the $ prompt and tried talking to the secondary mirror controller with "HOST TCC_SEC" and received a bunch of gibberish (see Problems section), so we rebooted the M2 galils. After the galils reboot, we tried talking to the secondary mirror controller again and were greeted with a happier normal response. Night: ----- 01:30Z - Homed and relaxed the mirrors. Positional errors were acceptable and are reported below. Primary (positional errors - microsteps) ---------------------------------------- E=0, F=50, D=50, A=-50, B=0, C=0 Secondary (positional errors - microsteps) ------------------------------------------ D=0, E=-50, A=-108, B=-96, C=396 Since the C error was relatively high, we reissued "A=0; B=0; C=0; XQ#HOME" according to the documentation and obtained better errors: A=-96, B=-108, C=24 02:00Z - Took mirror numbers (see Mirrors section) following the homing and relaxing procedures and they are in spec. We had high humidity (all night), clouds (most of the night), and rain (sometimes), so the night was lost. 04:00Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7664 23:37Z 23:52Z 100 O 43.92 47.75 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 54445, plate -9999 ------- 23:40 54445 0.0 bias ----- sequence 54446, plate 3106 ------- 23:48 54446 10.0 flat 23:50 54447 2.0 arc 23:54 54448 3.0 arc 23:57 54449 3.0 arc 00:11 54450 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:30Z 51 52 12 149 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 00:02Z 53 52 2 209 (SSW) -9999 - partly cloudy 00:33Z 53 51 11 183 (S) -9999 - partly cloudy 01:04Z 52 50 10 149 (SSE) -9999 - partly cloudy 01:35Z 50 51 14 122 (ESE) -9999 - partly cloudy 02:06Z 50 51 13 127 (SE) -9999 - partly cloudy 02:36Z 49 50 12 141 (SE) -9999 - partly cloudy 03:07Z 49 50 13 132 (SE) -9999 - clouds 03:38Z 49 50 10 150 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 04:09Z 50 50 11 168 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 04:40Z 50 50 13 159 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 05:11Z 50 51 12 176 (S) -9999 - clouds 05:42Z 50 51 9 185 (S) -9999 - clouds 06:12Z 51 51 7 157 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 06:42Z 48 49 6 358 (NNW) -9999 - clouds 07:12Z 47 48 8 344 (NNW) -9999 - clouds 07:42Z 48 49 3 237 (WSW) -9999 - clouds 08:13Z 48 49 7 286 (WNW) -9999 - clouds 08:43Z 48 47 2 256 (WSW) -9999 - clouds 09:13Z 48 48 8 223 (SW) -9999 - clouds 09:43Z 50 51 9 184 (S) -9999 - clouds ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- We never ventilated or opened because of inclement weather.
