See log. We lost about 45 minutes to a flat-field petal problem. See log. We had photometric skies, but poor seeing all night, so we opted for SEGUE spectroscopy. Added signal to: cart. 8, 3138 (one more exposure will finish it) cart. 5, 3130 cart. 6, 3110 We also added signal to cart. 7, 3121, but the other six attempted exposures on this plate resulted in (S/N)^2 SoS reported values < 2.0 due to poor seeing. So it seems that, in general, under photometric skies and no moon, seeing needs to be, at worst, around 1.8" with a half-hour exposure to obtain usable data. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All systems checked and working properly. Another `gotoField -gflat' was attempted to center the fiber masks, but we received an error regarding "gMakeHistogram" with too few counts for the gflat. We tried again and the same error. Elena restarted her SOP session and then it worked fine. 01:43Z - gotoField. Used two `gotoField -gflat' commands to center the fiber masks in SAOImage. Guide stars found on gotoField. 01:54Z - The three o'clock flat-field panel was stuck between a fully opened and fully closed state. We went out and visually checked the panel and tried cycling the panels opened and closed with the MCP a few times. Sometimes the three o'clock panel would begin to open, get about halfway, and then close fully. Other times it would not fully open, but remain in a half-opened state. The last couple times it worked normally, so we proceeded. 02:05Z - Pre-calibs. 02:12Z - End twilight. 02:13Z - Science. 1500s. This exposure never happened. After the pre-cal, the three o'clock flat-field petal was misbehaving and would not open/close properly again. We went outside and tightened the allen screws on the collars and then tested opening and closing the petals five or six times and they functioned normally. 02:35Z - Topped-off the spectro dewars again since we accessed the three o'clock flat-field petal at six degrees. 02:48Z - Pre-calibs. 02:55Z - Science. 1500s. 2.9 2.6 3.0 3.3 Jon worked on the DIMM for awhile this evening. The DIMM would not boot properly yesterday, so Jon looked at it and suspected a hard drive problem. He swapped the spare hard drive and tried booting the DIMM at the bench in the ops building and it booted fine. At the telescope, however, when the DIMM computer was reinstalled in the lower enclosure, it would progress part way through the boot process, flash an error message very quickly (that we couldn't catch), and then the screen would go blue. No adjustments made.
