APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 28, 2009 (MJD 55103) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz Kaike Pan (support) Paul Harding (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS until moonset (08:37Z), then BOSS. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had clear skies, but seeing was not very good, so tonight was a combination of MARVELS and BOSS spectroscopy. MARVELS ------- We were unable to observe cart. 8, 3512B, because `guider loadCartridge cartridge=8 pointing=B' failed. This will have to be fixed before we can attempt to observe it again. See Log for details. The guider actor was suddenly not connected at one point and we had to restart it from stageManager. We don't know what caused the disconnect to begin with. We noticed during one MARVELS observation that the guide stars had drifted noticeably away from the guide fiber centers before the guider brought them back. This happened around frames gimg0363-0370 and the corresponding flux drop in the PMT was noticeable during this period as well. We had a number of instances where after disabling some guide fibers because of an A or B pointing, the guider turned itself off. Other times, this was not the case and the guider remianed on. We don't know to what we can attribute this inconsistent behavior. We observed: cart. 4, 3518A, KEPLER4 cart. 4, 3518B, K5 cart. 9, 3513A, K10 cart. 9, 3513B, FIELD1572 cart. 3, 3084A, HAT-P-1 Exposure details are in the Log and Spectro sections. BOSS Spectro ------------ Our first set of cals failed and we had further readout issues with the subsequent set. Audrey eventually got things working by resetting the controllers, but details are in the Log. There are lots of `Collimate' results in the Problems section. We observed: cart. 12, 3599 (5X900s) cart. 11, 3621 (1X900s) ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========= 23:38Z - Restarted the servers on MONX3 and started an imager bias. 23:50Z - Turned on ThAr lamp. The outside temperature and the enclosure temperature were basically the same anyway. 00:40Z - Checked the upper and lower enclosures, mounted cartridge 8, and checked mirror numbers and fiducials. The 45-degree altitude fiducial again had trouble being read. Night ===== 00:51Z - Sunset. Opened to clear skies, force-filled the spectrographs and started the DIMM. Cart. 8, 3512B, XO-1 ******************** --------------------- loadCartridge Problem --------------------- When Audrey tried to load cartridge 8, 3512B, we got the following error: 01:16:01 APO.asimmons.guider 961 platedb f text="Unable to lookup pointing 2 in pointing_name" 01:16:01 APO.asimmons 39 guider f test="Failed to lookup gprobes for cartridge 8" STUI spit out a list of the cartridge 8 gprobes (1 thru 11 were True and 12 thru 17 were False, consistent with the old cartridge guide fibers) even though it said it could not lookup the gprobes for catridge 8. We called Kaike to see if we could try to run his MarvelMap script and see if we could override the plPlugMapM file in case something went awry this afternoon during plugging. The script failed as follows: o-bash-3.2$ MarvelMap Enter your last name(s): simmons, oravetz Enter plate number: 3512 Enter cartridge ID:8 you enter 3512 for plateID, 8 for cartridge number. please confirm. yes to continue, no to quit. yes awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `-v' for reading (No such file or directory) mv: cannot stat `plPlugMapM-3512-55103-01.par': No such file or directory /home/sdss3/products/Linux64/sqlalchemy/0.5.5/lib/python/sqlalchemy/engine/base.py:1265: SAWarning: Did not recognize type 'fibertype' of column 'fiber_type' self.dialect.reflecttable(conn, table, include_columns) I can't find /export/home/mapper/scan/55103/plPlugMapM-3512-55103-01.par awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `-v' for reading (No such file or directory) /home/sdss3/products/Linux64/sqlalchemy/0.5.5/lib/python/sqlalchemy/engine/base. py:1265: SAWarning: Did not recognize type 'fibertype' of column 'fiber_type' self.dialect.reflecttable(conn, table, include_columns) I can't find /export/home/mapper/scan/55103/plPlugMapM-3512-55103-01B.par mv: cannot stat `plPlugMapM-3512-55103-01B.par': No such file or directory Kaike came over to see what he could do and he noticed that the plPlugMapM file for 3512A was exactly the same as that for 3512B, even the pointing was "B" for the "A" plPlugMapM file. He tried to create a new plPlugMapM file by editing the fscanMJD (set it to 55103), fscanID (set it to 3), and cartridge ID (set it to 8) and reloaded it into platedb, but the cartridge still failed to load properly and threw the same errors printed above. We also noted that there was not a 3512A entry in the platedb when we did a `platedb showActive'. Kaike then tried to create a plPlugMapM file for 3512A, even though there is no "A" pointing for this plate, just to see if platedb would oblige if it had both an "A" and a "B" pointing. In this case he copied the edited plPlugMapM file that he created as mentioned above to an "A" plPlugMapM file and also changed the pointing to "A". When he tried loading this into platedb, it did not show anything different then he's used to seeing and it actually said there were now 21 entries (instead of 20) upon loading, but `platedb showActive' did not show the new entry and we still had failed attempts at loading the cartridge. We called Paul to see if there were some details in the guider actor that he was familiar with as to why the attempts at loading the cartridge would fail, but he said this was a deeper platedb issue and not so much a guider actor issue. He still tried searching for inconsistencies in the svn repository for this plate (perhaps coordinates were mismatched somewehre?), but didn't find anything noteworthy. 01:25Z - For some reason the guider actor suddenly became unresponsive and needed to be restarted from stageManager. Everything was responsive and behaving normally again, except that we were still unable to load cartridge 8, 3512B. We decided to take MARVELS calibrations just in case a work around was found for this loadCartridge issue because this was a higher priority plate (3) then the next two (2). 01:30Z - MARVELS TIO-ThAr-TIO calibration sequence. After a bit more digging, Kaike was unable to find a work around for this problem. (Thanks, Kaike, for coming in and making a valiant attempt.) We decided just to mount the next cartridge and proceed. Kaike did recall that there was a MARVELS plate that was to be redesigned, but only the "B" side was to be drilled and he mentioned that the plate design software could not handle dsigning only "B" pointings, so perhaps this is the problem. Nonetheless, we do not know how to fix the problem and until this is properly dealt with, 3512B will have to stay off the telescope. Cart. 4, 3518A, KEPLER4 *********************** 02:25Z - The cartridge loaded normally and we had guide stars on gotoField. 02:40Z - Audrey disabled the guide fibers that weren't involved with this pointing and the guider had turned itself off afterwards. This happened last night as well. Is this intended behavior? 02:43Z - MARVELS science exposure. In total, we took three sets of Hartmanns. `Collimate' results are in Problems section. 08:37Z - Moonset. 08:41Z - BOSS flat (30s) and arc (4s). We got an error that the arc failed: 08:47:48 APO.asimmons 186 sop w text="1 tasks failed to respond; heard from: " 08:47:48 APO.asimmons 186 sop w text="Failed to take arc" These cals were supposed to be exposures 102082 & 102083, but they were never written to disk. We did get a warning about SP2B2VPbA and Sp2B2VPbB, but it disappeared on its own. Is this related to the issues with the failed attempt at cals? We tried taking another set of cals to see if they'd write to disk since the other set may have been influenced by the warning, but this set of cals also did not get written. STUI reported a readout timeout and a completed readout at the exact same time, but these were also not written to disk: 08:53:51 APO.asimmons.sop 843 boss w text="Readout timed out." 08:53:51 APO.asimmons.sop 843 boss i test="readout took 168.33s" 08:53:51 APO.asimmons.sop 843 boss i SP1Errors=102086,0,0,0 08:53:51 APO.asimmons.sop 843 boss i SP2Errors=102084,0,0,0 08:53:51 APO.asimmons.sop 843 boss i test="Readout complete." exposureId=102085 Audrey tried to reload the controllers for both sp1 and sp2 and tried another set of cals and these were actually written to disk, but there's a gap on disk between exposures: 102084, 102085, 102086 are not there. 08:59Z - BOSS flat (30s) and arc (4s). 09:02Z - BOSS science exposure. 900s.
