APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday October 6, 2009 (MJD 55111) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dmitry Bizyaev Steph Snedden Support: Paul Harding (CWRU) guider mods Craig Loomis (PU) platedb Demitri Muna (NYU) platedb Russell Owen (UW) STUI and actors ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Marvels Science and any necessary commissioning. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Battled clouds and humidity for most of the night. We managed to get two MARVELS exposures, but one was declared bad because of clouds. Cartridge 5, side A, fibers 95, 96 - yellow bundle, blue, yellow are missing. Craig and Demitri worked on the cartridge 11 platedb problem first reported in Dan's day log. Demitri thinks he found the problem, but we still couldn't load the plate and make it active. Hopefully the day staff can do so from plate-mapper3 now. Russell worked on a countdown timer for BOSS exposures and fixed some bugs. Note that the critical alert sound cue going off for warnings has been fixed for the next STUI version. That will be a relief to some. The cloud camera went down during the evening. We took a monitor out and didn't see a video signal coming from the cloud camera itself. It looks like the problem is with the camera. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The MARVELS pre-selection plate requested for tonight could not be loaded into the plate database. Here is Dan's entry from the day log: Cartridge 11 plate 3624 was plugged and mapped on 55106 and mapped again today (55111), but for some reason isn't showing up in the database. I've asked Demitri, Robert, and Craig about it, but no resolution yet. The mapping info is there, so I suspect some database tweak is needed to get it to load/activate etc. No other problems noted during afternoon checkout. No collimation check made, since we had a MARVELS survey plate ready to observe. Craig worked on the cartridge 11 database problem reported by Dan Long today. The plate on cartridge 11 can be mapped, the mapping can be loaded, but the plate cannot be made active. Later, Demitri came online and also worked on the problem. Here is his email about the problem's resolution: "OK, I think I've figured it out. The statements were all being executed with no problem, but were not being committed to the database. I added a session.commit() line just before the end of loadPlPlugMapMFiles, and the file is in the database now. Stephanie, go ahead and run that script as needed. I don't know why this suddenly would stop working, but I'll look into it." Neither Dmitry or Steph were able to log into plate-mapper3 as mapper. Probably a public key issue, as we were asked for a password. 03:06Z - Turned on ThAr lamp 03:21Z - The cloud camera stopped transferring images. 03:29Z - Russell worked on implementing an exposure countdown timer in the STUI BOSS window. He also investigated some bugs, detailed in the "problems" section. 04:02Z - Called Fritz for help with the cloud camera. When he started irsc, it quit quickly. The exit status was that there was no video feed. Tweaking the video connector at the camera didn't help. Looks like the problem is in the hardware. We hooked up a monitor to zaphod, then to the cloud camera itself, and did not see video output. It looks like the problem is at the camera. 05:00Z - Clouds starting to dissipate. We opened. 05:17Z - Cartridge 9, plate 3513B - FIELD 1572 ----------------------------------------------- 05:29Z - GSOGTF The guider didn't work at first. Turns out the fibers we needed had been disabled from daytime simulator testing. Once re-enabled, guiding was fine. Alt=57 degrees Seeing about 1.5" - and the clouds started reforming. Humidity started rising. This exposure had somewhat poor efficiency. We had gambled on not being open for very long, and went to get the previous field without a fill. We then realized while doing the LN2 fill that we had the wrong cartridge mounted for the next field! The fill fault was a blessing in disguise. While filling, clouds drifted through. 07:30Z - Cartridge 5, plate 3085A - 51PEG ----------------------------------------- No guide stars. There was a star in one fiber, but not a guide star. Needed an offset of +11 asec in Dec to get guide stars. Altitude 49 deg Seeing 1.5 - 2 " FWHM After about 15 minutes, thick clouds rolled in and the fluxmeter dropped to about 6. We let the exposure finish, but it is almost certainly no good. Ints would still be accepted, the dictionary will work with the existing ICC. But it would be good to change the ICC to report 10ths of seconds (more digits won't hurt but seems silly). *** The reported values are 1 second too short. CL suspects that floats are getting truncated -- see previous issue. *** I fixed the dictionary bits fields for shutter and Hartmann bit fields. Open and closed were swapped. They need to be listed from LSB to MSB! Hartmann L & R bits match the command, so I assume all is well there now. I assume the motor status bits are swapped also, so I also reversed those. STUI * I found and fixed another sound cue bug: "ok" messages were resulting in "serious alert". * I go the BOSS countdown timer working (good thing I checked -- I didn't know what the time fields in exposureState were, and I had guessed wrong). Thanks to Steph for her help. * I need to simplify the Hartmann display -- probably Left/Right/Out for main displayed states, with a bit more detail when it's not in those three states. MCP (already reported and probably a fix is in the works, but in case not) The MCP is putting out plcVersions=24,Version but the dictionary says the values are ints. If it is acceptable for a value to be non- numeric, then let's fix the dictionary. Otherwise please fix the mcp. All changes described as done have been committed to svn trunk. The BOSS dictionary is now version 2,3 (from 2,2)
