APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday October 12, 2009 (MJD 55117) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden Craig Loomis (remotely) Paul Harding (remotely) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The night was lost to clouds, high humidity, very thick fog. Craig tried to duplicate the Hartmann door issue from the other night and also worked on the spechmech status commands. Paul worked on getting the guide fiber angles for cart. 13 to load properly. We completed Paul's guider flexure tests and also took some BOSS biases. Here is a procedure to ensure Hartmann screens are in fact OUT prior to science exposures: Issue "boss status" and look for screenStatus in the STUI Log. If screenStatus=0x05,0x05, then Hartmann screens are OUT and you are good to go. If screenStatus has something like 0x06 or 0x09, then this indicates that not all Hartmann screens are OUT and you should manually move them out: boss hartmann out spec=sp1 boss hartmann out spec=sp2 Check status again with "boss status" and look for 0x05 values. Also, check image headers for the HARTMANN keyword value to check that the screens are moving as expected. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========= 23:15Z - Restarted servers. 23:24Z Disk space: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 124G 12G 92% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 843G 28G 97% /data sdssfiles1p:/data1/data 1.8T 208G 1.6T 12% /files hub25mp:/home 92G 64G 29G 70% /home_hub25m 23:26Z - All actors alive and accounted for. 23:30Z - Imager bias, run 8090. 00:00Z - Checked out the enclosure and telescope. Everything looked fine. 00:20Z - We started ventilating even though conditions didn't look all that promising. Craig was working on trying to repeat the Hartmann issue from the other night and also making the spechmech output more reliable. Paul was looking at the guide fiber angles for cart. 13. We did not get any Hartmann exposures in lieu of their work. Night ===== 00:30Z - We had to reset the SP2 Micro. 00:45Z - The humidity was too high, so we stopped ventilating. 01:00Z - Ran 2.5m dewpoint sensor through heating cycle because the sensor was frozen. Craig advised that in the short term we explicitly open the Hartmann doors before science exposures using "boss hartmann out spec=spN" (N is 1 or 2), to ensure the screen is indeed out. He also relayed to us that the spechmech status output and headers are correct. *** Before any science image, please check "boss status" and see what the screenStatus values are. You want to see 0x05,0x05. This indicates the Hartmann door/screen is OUT. 0x06 and 0x09 are other values indicating some door is IN. 04:45Z - Tightened guider barrel nuts against focus rings in preparation for the guider flexure test. 05:46Z - Guider flexure test. Disregard the PLATEID and CARTID values in the headers for these; they're not right because we the cartridge that was loaded was not on the telescope at the time of these. 10:33Z - Rain sensor went off. 10:56Z - Too wet and cloudy for any chance of getting on sky; we called it. 10:59Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8090 23:30Z 00:05Z 100 O 83.25 92.13 72 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:34Z 52 40 21 226 (SW) 453 - c 22:06Z 51 40 20 223 (SW) 632 - l 22:38Z 51 40 22 209 (SSW) 729 - o 23:11Z 50 39 21 230 (SW) 703 - u 23:42Z 52 39 19 215 (SW) 674 - d 00:06Z 51 41 16 213 (SSW) 706 - s 00:38Z 48 43 18 200 (SSW) 641 - c 01:10Z 47 46 15 189 (S) 558 - l 01:42Z 49 41 16 192 (SSW) 586 - o 02:15Z 48 41 13 189 (S) 455 - u 02:47Z 49 43 20 204 (SSW) 324 - d 03:19Z 49 43 17 195 (SSW) 191 - s 03:51Z 47 45 11 183 (S) 141 - c 04:23Z 47 45 26 181 (S) 46 - l 04:55Z 47 46 26 194 (SSW) 148 - o 05:26Z 47 47 22 196 (SSW) 1972 - u 05:56Z 46 46 24 200 (SSW) 576 - d 06:28Z 46 46 22 204 (SSW) 1726 - s 06:58Z 48 48 27 192 (SSW) 2577 - c 07:32Z 47 47 26 197 (SSW) 2754 - l 08:04Z 47 47 25 203 (SSW) 21647 - o 08:36Z 48 48 20 207 (SSW) 3646 - u 09:08Z 47 47 23 210 (SSW) 2751 - d 09:40Z 47 47 16 201 (SSW) 4620 - s 10:13Z 47 47 22 206 (SSW) 4865 - c 10:45Z 47 47 23 216 (SW) 3907 - l ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:20Z - Began ventilation.
