APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 6, 2009 (MJD 55172) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Howard Brewington Kaike Pan (afternoon) Support: Craig Loomis Paul Harding ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS and MARVELS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Most of the night was lost to clouds; however, we did get one exposure of Cart 01, plate 3088A, MARVELS. We lost an hour trying to find the field for Cart 09, plate 3709B. Our pointing model seems to be a little soft, and we have no way to slew to an Fk5 star, sticky the offsets, or do a spiral pattern search of the area. So, we never found this field. We've noticed for the past two nights that the counts for MARVELS TIO and ThAr exposures have been a little low. We tried cleaning the gang connector, which did not help. We've also noticed that the locking ring on the connector seems stiff. Could the engCrew please check the gang connector for moth juice? Thanks! We did more hartmann tests for Kyle. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 22:45Z tarted Ventilation. Cartridge 3 was currently plugged with plate 3356. But this plugging did not show up in STUI "platedb showActive". "makePluggingActive" did make it show up there. However, we found that if someone open or refresh plugging page: http://sdss-db.apo.nmsu.edu:8081/pluggings.html, this plugging will disappear from STUI "platedb showActive". This is the 2nd time that happens, on the same cartridge (#3), different plate. A ticket #468 was files. During afternoon, when we tried to do "sop hartmann", the command failed with "cannot close FF screen". We checked MCPMenu, it says FFS is closed, but STUI MCP says it is open. Then we tried restated sop, close FFS from MCP menu (although it was closed). None of them work. After some time, STUI did show FFS is closed. We do not know how we started with inconsistency FFS status on mcp Menu and STUI mcp (we never open or close it from MCP menu before we notice the inconsistency), and we do not what made the STUI mcp change FFS status. After we finished hartmann test, we open lamps from MCP menu to see if STUI mcp will update lamps status accordingly. It did! Since the enclosure is on, we could not do the same test for FFS. FYI, according to Craig, if MCP menu and STUI mcp have inconsistent info, a command"mcp inf" from STUI log will force STUI mcp update its info. Visually checked all plugged plates and confirmed that STUI "platedb showActive" does give correct plugging. No other problem to report. But these are enough for today. Night: ------- 23:57Z Sunset with clouds. The doors were cracked with fans on. We waited for a break in the sky cover. 01:24Z Twilight end, and we did more hartmann for Kyle; see below. 121,30,0 frames 104484-85 sp1 sp2 ------------------------------ temp 2.3 0.9 b -9.1 7.9 r 53 -776 motorPosition=5533,6784,6167,6250,6244,6250 121,30,45 frames 104488-89 sp1 sp2 ------------------------------ temp 2.3 0.9 b -9.1 7.9 r 1174 -873 motorPosition=5533,6784,6167,6250,6244,6250 121,30,-45 frames 104490-91 sp1 sp2 ------------------------------ temp 2.4 1.0 b -6.0 4.3 r 747 -2717 motorPosition=5533,6784,6167,6250,6244,6250 121,45,-45 frames 104492-93 sp1 sp2 ------------------------------ temp 2.4 1.0 b -6.7 5.2 r 854 -3008 motorPosition=5533,6784,6167,6250,6244,6250 121,45,0 frames 104494-95 sp1 sp2 ------------------------------ temp 2.3 1.0 b -12.0 7.2 r 854 -1455 motorPosition=5533,6784,6167,6250,6244,6250 121,45,45 frames 104496-97 sp1 sp2 ------------------------------ temp 2.3 1.0 b -17.3 11.4 r 1174 -824 motorPosition=5533,6784,6167,6250,6244,6250 06:10Z Enclosure off as sky began to clear. We, unfortunately, spent an hour tring to find this field, but never did. We did several loadCart, gotofield, guider flats, and MANY offsets without success. While doing offsets, we did find a few stars, but never more than one at a time. Finally, we moved to the next cart. Sorry. 07:55Z Cart 01, plate 3088, HD43691, pointing=A. We found the field with the same offsets as last night, viz., tcc offset arc 0,0.002 Seeing was about 1.5" as reported by the DIMM. We completed on 50 minuted exposure. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Image Cart Plate Texp Exptype Object - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - T05:58:42.220 0 11. 43163. 4871.
