APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday February 12, 2010 (MJD 55240) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Dmitry Bizyaev Kaike Pan (afternoon) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It seems that MCP occasionally refuses to take new connections. Ticket (#602) is filed on it. BOSS night, very clear, no Moon, decent seeing. End of the night was windy, with blowing snow. We closed earlier because of blowing snow. BOSS plates exposed: 3647 (c. 10) not finished (although it has numerous previous observations with different plugMap files). 3655 (c. 12) DONE 3780 (c. 13) DONE 3769 (c. 17) DONE 3773 (c. 16) DONE Paul ran new version of the guider code tonight. An advantage is that is now reports seeing below 1.5", we noticed it was sometimes 1.1" tonight. A disadvantage we seen is that the Autofocus has to be disabled during acquiring guide stars, and then focus has to be adjusted to gaussian stars manually, otherwise the focus loop drives focus away of the good one. Looks like we have a deficit of at least one cartridge this time of year. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All actors, systems, and the telescope were checked. No problem to report. BOSS spectro collimation was checked with cartridge 10. compressed mcptpm data from mjd 54386-54395. 23:15Z started ventilation. 00:35Z When we tried to start new mcp sessions in control room. New MCP Menu showed that MCP is unavailable. We checked and found that there was only one mcp Menu connection at that time, the one on telescope enclosure, and it worked fine. At that time, STUI mcp worked too. So it seems that the old MCP connection and STUI mcp worked fine, the problem is mcp refuses to take new connections. Rebooting mcp fixed the problem. This has happened a few times, so we filed a ticket for it (#602). Night: ------- 00:52Z telescope opened. 01:20Z gotoField with cartridge 10 plate 3647 GSOGTF We are running new version of guider (trunk). Guider is strange behaving. No reasonable convergence was observed, then focus was found around +800 (rather large value, usually it is somewhere between 400 and 650). We double checked that nothing wrong happened when the cartridge was mounted this evening. Most probbaly hti sis a well known feature of the guider that it cannot find the best focus if it is initially way out of it. After it was manually adjusted, it caught the path and converged well. Paul Harding is on-line in connection, and follows the guider progress. Also, he noticed that this version of the guider reports the guide stars' fwhm below 1.5". Focus loop now looks much better! 11 01:28 b1-00108328 10 3647 arc Lef 5.0 -12807 -12812 -12808 HART 12 01:30 b1-00108329 10 3647 arc Rig 5.0 -12807 -12812 -12808 HART 13 01:54 b1-00108330 10 3647 fla Out 31.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 14 01:56 b1-00108331 10 3647 arc Out 5.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 15 01:58 b1-00108332 10 3647 sci Out 901.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 16 02:19 b1-00108333 10 3647 sci Out 900.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 17 02:36 b1-00108334 10 3647 sci Out 900.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 18 02:53 b1-00108335 10 3647 fla Out 31.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 19 02:55 b1-00108336 10 3647 arc Out 4.0 -9521 -9503 -9545 [observer@sos3 ~]$ ~/plate3 3647 55240 (S/N)^2 accumulated for plate 3647 ---- logfile-55128.html ---- ---- logfile-55129.html ---- ---- logfile-55149.html ---- ---- logfile-55157.html ---- ---- logfile-55173.html ---- ---- logfile-55177.html ---- ---- logfile-55178.html ---- ---- logfile-55181.html ---- ---- logfile-55240.html ---- ------------------------------------------------------------ MJD b1 r1 b2 r2 Texp Sum Plugfile ------------------------------------------------------------ 55240 2.2 4.7 2.4 5.1 901.0 14.4 3647-55237-01 55240 2.1 4.7 2.1 4.1 900.0 13.0 3647-55237-01 55240 1.9 4.5 1.7 3.0 900.0 11.1 3647-55237-01 ------------------------------------------------------------ 6.2 13.9 6.2 12.2 2701.0 --> 38.5 ------------------------------------------------------------ Seeing ~ 1.2" Note that this plate has been observed many times before, but with different plug files. --- 02:58Z cart. 12 plate 3655 is mounted.
