APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday April 28, 2010 (MJD 55315) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Dan Oravetz Paul Harding (guider tests) Robert Lupton (software fest) Craig Loomis (software fest) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS & Engineering Time ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first half of the night was lost due to the weather. Paul completed one of his guider tests, checking the RMS guiding errors with and without ferrule offsets using cartridge 13. There was no obvious improvement with the ferrule offsets included (though with other cartridges in previous tests on other nights there is an improvement with the inclusion of the ferrule offsets), so Paul is going to re-evaluate and try again later. We observed MARVELS plates the remainder of the night with not-so-good seeing. C. 9, 3899A, KEPLER4 C. 4, 3903A, K4 (several fibers appear dropped/broken, see Log) C. 4, 3903B, K7 (several fibers appear dropped/broken, see Log) C. 5, 3894B, K15 Dust was around 2000 for most of the night, with some minor jumps. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========= 00:10Z - Verified that the STUI actors were alive and responsive. 00:12Z - Verified that the servers on MONX3 were alive and responsive. 00:15Z - ThAr lamp turned on. 00:25Z - Verified gcamera and spectro temperatures were in spec. 00:30Z - Checked out the telescope and upper & lower enclosure. Checked fiducial crossings and mirror numbers. Disk space: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 130G 4.5G 97% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 843G 28G 97% /data sdssfiles1p:/data1/data 1.8T 120G 1.7T 7% /files hub25m:/home 92G 89G 3.3G 97% /home hub25m:/data 2.6T 2.5T 188G 93% /data 00:55Z - Began ventilation, except the W door was kept closed since the wind was coming from the west and bringing some dust along with it. The wind speed had come down and the 1.0 um dust count was hovering around 2000, but we had thick clouds overhead that prevented us from opening on time. Night ===== 05:20Z - Opened to mostly clear skies. 05:45Z - Forced a fill from the 180L dewar. Mounted cart. 13 for Paul's guider test. 06:04Z - Following a gflat, STUI reported that the gcamera actor was disconnected. We checked the gcameraICC status from stageManager and it verified that gcameraICC was not running so we restarted it and verified it was indeed running. The subsequent attempts to reconnect via 'hub startNubs gcamera' reported that the gcamera actor was still disconnected. We checked the status again from stageManager and gcameraICC was not running. We re-restarted gcameraICC, verified it was running, and then the 'hub startNubs gcamera' connected the gcamera. 06:28Z - APO.kpan 112 guider w text="FF petals aren't open; aborting guiding" During the guider test, the guider stopped about a dozen times or so providing the error shown above as justification for stopping. The wind was shaking the FF petals enough to toggle the OPEN switches between OPEN and NOT OPEN, causing the guider to stop each time. Ticket #796 was filed on this issue. 07:15Z - Paul finished up with his guider test in which he checked the RMS guiding errors with and without ferrule offsets. Nothing very conclusive was determined, so Paul decided to re-examine how the offsets are being handled in the code and try again later. 07:18Z - Cals.
