APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 25, 2010 (MJD 55434) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dmitry Bizyaev Steph Snedden Support: Paul Harding (eng cam) Craig Loomis (spectro daq, mechanicals etc.) French Leger (moral support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Flex Engineering, MARVELS if time permits ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We noticed a recurrence of the bad rotator vibration tonight. This happened at an alt of 90 degrees, just after clearing the axes. We took two 20-minute daks for Connie; exposures 118248 and 118249. We spent first half with Paul, adjusting the height of the engineering camera in its cartridge so that it sits at the focal surface of a typical BOSS cartridge. Second half was given to LED flats, but only a truncated sequence was obtained because of a complex of failures from the spectrographs (see the log body). We needed Craig's help to get both spectrographs reading out properly. Note that the red LED pot is turned fully up for the sequence and the blue LED is backed off 1/4 turn from full range. The LEDs are positioned at the center of the slithead plates. Images look normal, and communications between the mechanicals and the rest of the world are re-established. Took two 20 minute darks per Connie's request. The enclosure had some daylight leaking The exposure numbers of the darks are 118248 and 118249. Night: ----- 00:50Z - Started ventilation, but left enclosure doors down for darks. 01:10Z - ThAr lamp on. 01:58Z - No Paul yet, so we will home & relax mirrors. 03:25Z - Paul is online. Opened. Started LN2 fill 03:42Z - Mounted cartridge 12 to establish best focus on a BOSS cartridge: best focus=490 (relative) 05:12Z - Mounted engcam and slewed to an FK5 to establish best focus with the engcam: Best focus is at 750 (relative), 1870 (absolute). 05:35Z - We then moved the engcam rail very slightly up (toward the corrector - not easy to control). We were attempting to move the rail so that we would be in focus at a setting of 490 (relative). Best focus was at 850 (relative), 1967 (absolute). 06:05Z - Next we tried moving the rail down, and the focus offset was worse. 06:15Z - Dmitry set the rail all the way up in loose contact with the block. The best focus was 650 (relative), 1769 (absolute). This is about as close as we can get on this side. Paul then edited the 1.3 degree off-axis engcam instrument block and we found best focus for an FK5 was at 800 (relative), 1923 (absolute). Dmitry then raised the rail end closest to the off-axis position. Finally, we got a good focus of 550 (relative), 1671 (absolute) off-axis and 500 / 1623 on-axis. Next we mounted cartridge 12 again and found best focus had drifted to 390 / 580. 07:51Z - We then checked the focus with the engcam mounted again, after a delay caused by the zenith locking pin being out enough to allow axis inits, but in enough to cause alt slips. Before even mounting the engcam, we moved the rail up slightly at both ends. It is now fully up against the stop at the end nearest the on-axis position. The new best focus positions on the engcam are 275/1397 on-axis, 325/1445 off-axis. Since cartridge 12 would probably have drifted closer to 350 by now and we are well within cartridge-to-cartridge variation, we called it good. Note that the telescope is front-heavy at 6 degrees alt with the engineering camera mounted and the counterweights at 290. We had the telescope drop to 3 1/2 degrees before we stoppped it. We set the counterweights to 200 to move it back up. At observing altitudes, we had been using 290, but 270 is better. 09:02Z - We closed for LED flats. We first tried doing "boss exposure flat" and saw that the b1 and r1 exposure times were zero and the images looked like biases. b2 and r2 were fine. We experimented a bit with different exposure types and verified that the problem occurred only when you did an exposure that needed to open the shutters. The solution was to do a "boss mechIack" and then the shutters would move. We then tried one 10 sec flat exposure, which worked. Next we did a 100 sec exposure to see if the blue LED was saturating. The exposure failed on sp1 with: 09:52:26 APO.dmbiz 229 boss w text="Readout timeout expired, aborting exposure." 09:52:26 APO.dmbiz 229 boss i exposureState=ABORTED,0.0,0.0 09:52:26 APO.dmbiz 229 boss f text="exposure aborted" Then we could not start another exposure, as specMech was offline for both spectrographs. We called Craig who said that both sp DAQS were "failing horrendously". Craig will file a ticket. We reset the "CNTRL RESET" for Craig on sp1. The shutters didn't open again. We think Craig iack'ed the mechanicals again, and then we were able to get a few LED flats for Kyle. It is not a complete sequence, but it will give Kyle something to look at, and it the exposures at least are from all 4 cameras(!) The exposure numbers for the abbreviated LED flat sequence are in the summary section for convenience. 10:46Z - ThAr off 12:25Z - endNight finished. ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 03:23Z 48 37 20 62 (ENE) 497 - mostly clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope at 30 deg alt with the eng cam mounted.
