We used closed-loop scale changes tonight, while keeping a watchful eye on the guider and the recommended scale changes with Craig's oversight, and it seems that the routine works successfully overall. Craig still has a few reservations about the closed-loop routine, specifically related to how it would perform under more arduous conditions (e.g. clouds, seeing instability), but at least we were able to use the routine successfully during tonight's cooperative conditions. During the formulation of the plugging email Howard noticed a gap between ~08:45Z - 09:30Z. The only available plates for that time slot are "special" plates, but no regular science plates. We encountered a number of instances where the guider images showed a small telescope motion. There are several examples in the Log recounting exposure numbers and timestamps of such behavior. The corresponding error vectors seemed to reflect a motion of order a couple arseconds. The cartridge bay scissor lift malfunctioned toward the end of the night and we reverted to the manual controls to operate the lift thereafter. Details in Log. We had to add a few extra exposures beyond the requisite (S/N)^2 limits to a couple of plates throughout the night because we just didn't have enough cartridges, especially since many plates had partial signal. The moth trap in the lower enclosure is doing its job but seems to be overwhelmed. 22:25Z - Ventilation on, but doors closed. 22:35Z - Craig turned off guider simulator so I could do guider checkout. Guider dark, flat taken. 22:40Z - All actors checked and alive (except ecamera, as expected). 22:47Z - guider turned back to Craig for more simulations. 22:47Z - BOSS bias, dark, Hartmann, flat and arc taken on cartridge 10. Collimation adjusted (only actuator piston needed). 23:23Z - Doors opened. Cleaned a bit of moth goo off the az and alt drive surfaces, but no guarantees it won't be back on the first slew of the night. 23:51Z - Forced a 180-liter LN2 fill. Night: ----- 00:15Z - Opened to partly cloudy skies. Craig and Paul began testing the practicality of closed-loop scale-change routines during twilight. Since the clouds thickened and conditions were not conducive to BOSS observing, they worked beyond twilight until conditions improved. 02:15Z - The clouds were on their way out and we moved forward with BOSS observing. It made a straining sound where it seemed as though it wanted to move upward as instructed, but it didn't move at all and very shortly after it died. Howard found the breaker switch for the scissor lift in the panel just inside the door to the support building had been tripped (#26 if I correctly recall). We reset the breaker and tried the lift again, but it was still straining and not moving. We used the manual switches to move the lift so that cart. 13 was accessible.
