We lost some time at the beginning of the night adjusting the collimator mirror positions and the red focus rings and then getting things back in-focus and with in-spec SoS values. We operated with manual full-frame Hartmanns all night because some tests of the sub-frame Hartmann routine appear to indicate that it sends the spectrographs to a more out-of-focus state. Added signal to: cart. 12, 4291 cart. 15, 3803 cart. 17, 3812 Finished: cart. 11, 4298 cart. 13, 4312 cart. 14, 4270 cart. 10, 3807 We put extra exposures on a number of different plates because we just didn't have anything else to observe in certain windows when we finished a plate. With partial signal on plates going into a night, this tends to happen a lot. The arc for cart. 17, 3812 exhibited the same behavior as last night. Out-of-spec b2 wsigma value (in-spec xsigma value) following Collimate results on full-frame Hartmanns indicating b2 was in-focus. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Kaike connected with French regarding the cartridge 18 shim. It had a shim of .01 inches added. We did not have time to mount the cartridge to take arcs and flats, but Kaike asked Dan and Garrett to do so tomorrow. Kaike and Steph then looked at the Hartmann problem from last night. We discovered right away that we were hitting a limit on one of the spectrograph actuators, and that no doubt was the source of at least one problem last night. We moved the actuators to be in focus about 20,000 steps away from the limit. Why wasn't the above caught last night? We note that there is a warning message that shows a reverse move, but it is a blue warning that scrolls by and disappears quickly. The arc lines fell right on top of each other during the ds9 blinking. We did another gotoField with the sub-frame Hartmanns included to see what piston moves would be suggested by the sub-frame Hartmann routine. In other words, since we know we are in focus as confirmed by both the Collimate output and by a direct visual inspection of images 122135 & 36, how would the sub-frame Hartmann routine behave? We later declared these as "test". 02:39Z - Full-frame Hartmanns (122141 & 42). The sub-frame Hartmann routine made moves that produced a discernably worse focus condition than we had been in prior to running the sub-frame Hartmann routine.
