APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday December 25, 2010 (MJD 55556) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dmitry Bizyaev Kaike Pan Steph Snedden (afternoon) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS until 05:07 (3.6 h), then MARVELS (8.0 h) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Merry Christmas! I'm afraid I have no witty rhyme like Dmitry had last night. We observed 3 BOSS plates: cart 14, plate 4350. DONE. cart 10, plate 4549. DONE. cart 16, plate 4528. and 7 MARVELS plates: cart 1, plate 3713B. Field HIP14810. Clear sky, seeing 1.5"-2.5". Possible broken fibers: 67/68, 77/78, 85/86. cart 6, plate 3219A. Field HD17156. Clear sky, seeing at 2.0". Possible broken fiber: 99/100. cart 5, plate 3702A. Field HD 46375. Clear sky, seeing 1.2-2.2". Possible broken fibers: 41/42, 45/46, 81/82, 85/86, 105/106. cart 7, plate 3890A. Field GJ176. Clear Sky, seeing at ~3.0". Broken fibers: 33/34. cart 7, plate 3890B. Field ]1631. Clear sky.seeing at 3.0" or worse in the first half, then improved to ~2.0". Broken ibers: 1/2, 61/62, 65/66. Cart 4, plate 3892A, field 47UMA. Clear sky, seeing at 1.4"-2.2". Broken fibers: 57/58. Cart 4, plate 3892B. Field HD 118203. Clear sky, seeing at 1.2.0-2.0". Broken fibers: 31/32, 89/90. DIMM information on weather page (weather.apo.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/weather.py/: We did not run DIMM tonight, but we noticed that DIMM info on this page was pdating. Does the code read a old file and update the page? For sure, the DIMM seeing measurements were not from tonight. We noticed that the telescopejumped 2-3" a few times (see log body for cart 10) during BOSS observations but not in MARVELS'. One asked cartridge (#13) is not in the cartridge bay. This forced us to observe a plate 1 hour before its visiblity window. STUI returned error messages (see log body) on load cartridges, but down stream commands "gotoField" etc work fine. "gotoField" failed with bad angle on B2 but fellowing up full hartmann shows it is okay. Neither acquisition fibers #10 nor 11) was seen on cartridge 6. Are they both broken, please check. Thanks, ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Checkout at the telescope was without problems 22:50Z - All actors checked and reported OK 22:55Z - Ventilation started 23:17Z - ThAr lamp on 23:23Z - Cartridge 14 was on the telescope and no collimation adjust was needed. 23:37Z - Doors opened Christmas dinner: ---------------- Guests: (besides the night's observers) Elisa Snedden Lalo Olmos Alanis Lalo's wife Patricia children Eduardo Arturo Vanessa Wayne West Russet McMillan Christmas dinner menu: (if I missed something, apologies) Appetizers cheese and assorted crackers trail mix Salads Olivier salad Tossed green salad carrot w/ ginger and raisin salad Main course glazed ham shrimp lo mein scalloped potatoes squash and lentil stew carrot, potato and sweet potato casserole Mashed potatoes cranberry chutney corn french bread and butter Dessert chocolate mousse anthill cake truffles Drinks mulled apple cider tea coffee Thank you, Elisa and Steph for preapring the yummy dinner! Night: ----- 00:05Z - Opened enclosure. The DIMM computer was unresponsive, and the telescope was live, so we did not reboot it. Hopefully, it only needs a reboot. 00:22Z - Cartridge 14 - Plate 4350 - BOSS ----------------------------------------- Needed the usual -RA, +Dec offset to get the field during twilight. The plate was finished with one exposure. Because one of asked cartridges, cart 13, is not in the cartridge bay. We decided to get one more exposure on this plate. The plate is DONE.
