APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 7, 2001 (MJD 52129) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Daniel Long Atsuko Kleinman Steph Snedden (day) Eric Neilsen Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake Night #2: Verify pointing model. Start check of instruments on sky. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds and occasional rain kept us closed all night. Some shake not requiring sky was done, as was the spectro monthly check. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The secondary had another error where it couldn't stop on a full step. 0 0 F Modu="mir_o_MoveOneGalil"; Text=" Sec returned an error message" 0 0 I Received="?GOCORR one or more axes did not end on a full step 0, 0, 0, 0, 1" 0 0 W Text="failed to adjust collimation and focus" Like last night, homing the complaining axis cured the problem. The position error reported after homing was 150 microsteps or three turns and while not ideal at least it is an integer number of turns. PR 2559: Dewar 3 iced up and occasionally complaining of ln2temp, ln2 empty PR 2560: Twice in two days M2 actuator E couldn't stop on a full step Lots of shaking of logTool was done tonight. Mirror numbers and offsets now show up in the editable section as well as the uneditable sections of the log. Work was done on figuring out why spectrograph exposures are not showing up in the "s4l" section of the log. For now s4l is being run separately and the results are pasted into the log. The fixes made tonight are in v3_53_0 of iop, which is now the current test version. Some time was spent working with the PT software even though the dome was closed. While trying to learn PT observing, we found that MOP could not talk to the TCS. Since we were scheduled to take pointing model tonight if the weather was good, the TCS was setup to do so and not to talk to the outside. Eric N. figured this out and rebooted TCS with the toggle switch at the correct position to allow TCS to talk to MOP. This afternoon, Jon B., Steph and Lynn inspected the PT drive surfaces and gave them a light coat of french horn rotary valve oil. They looked to be in good shape, with no or very little new oxidation. They were also fairly clean, given that they are only cleaned once a year or so. The PT flat field lamp was also replaced. The PT camera was removed and the reticle eyepiece installed in hopes the weather would break, allowing for a pointing model. It turns out that the weather had other plans. We tested PR1466 yesterday, but forgot to put it in the nightlog. PR1466: cleanupMurmur This command now will stop and restart the murmur server, and write the logs at appropriate places. The output of the command lists the murmur windows which were getting the info from the murmur log file that has become the "previous day's murmur log" when the "cleanupMurmur" was issued. The old "cleanupMurmur" command told us to kill all these windows, but the new command lists them, but does not tell us explicitly to kill them. If you already have a murmur log window up before you run "cleanupMurmur", you will notice that the window is no longer updated. Steph completed the Spectro Monthly checkout since JB did not have time to complete it today. RESULTS OF SPECTRO MONTHLY CHECKOUT: ------------------------------------ All collimator motor positions were 0 to start. At the end of the checkout, they were: sp1> A 0 sp2> A -200 B 0 B -200 C 0 C 200 The red cameras needed no focus adjustment. The blue cameras only requred: sp1 blue: 6 degrees sp2 blue: 9 degrees Dithered spectro flats are in the MJD 52129 directory, images 10497-10503. Associated arcs are images 10504, 10505. About every hour and a half there is an error that the ln2 is empty along with an ln2temp error. Looking at the ln2temp plot one sees five or six data points around the nominal temperature of 92 K, followed by one point somewhere between 110 and 120 K. It looks like the fill interval is just slightly longer than the hold time. None of the other dewars are showing this behavior. Is is possible the vacuum isn't what it should be, or maybe there is a leak in the fill tube where it connects to the dewar, leading to inefficient or incomplete fills? PR 2560: Twice in two days M2 actuator E couldn't stop on a full step. In the last two days, each time early in the evening, we started getting errors from the M2 galil when it attempted to adjust the collimation of the secondary during tracking. The galil was complaining that it could not get actuator E to stop on a full step. 0 0 F Modu="mir_o_MoveOneGalil"; Text=" Sec returned an error message" 0 0 I Received="?GOCORR one or more axes did not end on a full step 0, 0, 0, 0, 1" 0 0 W Text="failed to adjust collimation and focus" In both cases homing the E axis restored operation and it kept working the rest of the night.
