APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 25, 2001 (MJD 52147) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Due to the weather we've been closed first half of the night. We've done one plate 662 but there we've met two problems. 1) We had another "too large to correct" fiducial crossing, but this time for azimuth: Aug 26 02:53:59 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -18423 to azimuth Aug 26 02:53:59 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_E_trcErr correction for azimuth -18423 is too large Aug 26 02:53:59 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_W_trcWarn Not disabling MS.ON; error -18423 (max allowed: 600) 2) The telescope stopped tracking during the smear for our one observed plate. See the problem section. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We are driving with Landru using the new Xserver -Jurek is trying to write a night log with Erick's logTool (and had some problems with it - a PR will be sent). Clouds and rain and high winds and humidity at the beginnig of the night. 19:40 clouds are building up, wating with enclosure on dors open. 19:55 the weather thretens us too much so we closed the telescope :(. Note that Cartridge 2 plate 634 had wrong INST id 3 in the TPM display, a proper PR has been filed. (At the end of the nigh when we re-mounted cart 2, the TPM display read properly.) 2:30 Opened, put cart 6 plate 656 on but we couldn't find any stars wtih fk5InFiber or by doing spiralPattern. While spiraling we've got the proverbial Relay Server error which we fixed by following Pete's folklore procedure. We then decided to change from cart 6 to cart 7 plate 662. After we put cart 7 on the telescope, we noticed that Azimuth fiducial crossings were asking for a correction that was too large to correct. So, we refiducilized the telescope in azimuth and than found an fk5 star with no problem (however it showed up whit 10" north offset. 5:55 The telescope stopped tracking during smearing for the observed plate. It looks like a similar problem to the past few nights. See problem setion for details. We also noticed that the signal to noise ratio in SOS window for the fourth exposure is very low, while on the guider we saw stars most of the time and the efficiency was also high (over 55%). Perhaps coincidenally, perhaps not, we also noticed the message below the S/N window at SOS: QUICKEXTRACT: sdR-r2-00010717.fit: WARNING: Large flexure flat<->science (Post-calibs recommended!) Could it be connected with our low S/N ratio for the third exposure? After smear ended we issued axis init command and decided to take another exposure which completed the plate. We followed that with another smear (which started 9 minutes past twilight) hen a postCalib. We put again cart 2 plt 634 on the telescope and the TPM display was showing a correct number this time! We closed at 5:45. Landru survived the entire night once again. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2513 100 O bias/ignore! 52.97 57.85 42 test bias (dog house) ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 10710, plate -9999 ------- 00:34 10710 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 10711, plate 662 ------- 09:24 10711 10.0 flat pre-flat 09:26 10712 2.0 arc pre-arc 09:50 10713 900.0 target science 10:08 10714 901.0 target science 10:26 10715 901.0 target science 10:44 10716 901.0 target science 11:15 10718 900.0 target science 11:23 10719 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} 11:28 10720 10.0 flat post-flat 11:30 10721 2.0 arc post-arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:36 7:622 998818584 0.000931 0.002815 0.006776 1.000060 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4336 Stays: JL4337 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:43 7:662 1.00006 -591 551 -150 12 47.0 13.7 5 259 gdr 1.7 04:24 7:662 1.00001 -99 857 -250 -3 47.7 14.4 2 210 gdr 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 18:09 74 32 7 244 (WSW) 298 - 18:42 72 32 7 261 (W) 302 - 19:14 68 33 7 263 (W) 360 - 19:46 68 33 7 269 (W) 373 - 20:18 65 38 5 84 (E) 375 - 20:50 63 40 13 78 (ENE) 372 - 21:23 50 48 45 67 (ENE) 641 - 21:55 49 48 33 68 (ENE) 366 - 22:27 49 48 17 77 (ENE) 384 - 23:00 49 48 21 75 (ENE) 420 - 23:32 51 46 4 114 (ESE) 548 - 00:04 49 47 15 74 (ENE) 488 - 00:36 49 46 15 66 (ENE) 436 - 01:06 50 46 6 75 (ENE) 457 - 01:37 50 45 12 73 (ENE) 380 - 02:07 51 44 9 80 (E) 382 - 02:38 57 41 0 93 (E) 463 - 03:09 58 41 7 230 (SW) 480 - 03:39 56 41 5 235 (SW) 552 - 04:10 58 41 2 226 (SW) 558 - 04:42 58 41 2 266 (W) 480 - 05:14 57 41 2 276 (W) 491 - 05:47 57 41 7 330 (NNW) 489 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 2:30 oeopened fans on. 5:45 closed.
