APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 7, 2001 (MJD 52251) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Atsuko Nitta (APO; swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Four plates declared done (744, 751, 752, 230). Lost the 2nd half of the night to high wind and high humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We opened at sunset to scattered cirrus and began with spectroscopy on cartridge 4 plate 744. This plate was finished in two exposures (there were data from a previous night). Post-calibs were requested for the 2nd exposure but the request was not seen until after we had swapped cartridges. Cartridge 5 plate 751 was finished in 3 exposures. We noticed a large number of 'correction too large' errors when slewing to instrument change for both this plate and the previous plate. See the problems section for details. Cartridge 6 plate 752 was finished in 3 exposures. S-O-S reported a red monster in the last science frame. During the post-cals it was noticed that neon lamp number 3 (NW lamp) was out. We swapped bulbs and the burnt bulb is on French's desk with a note. Cartridge 9 plate 230 was finished in 3 exposures. Cartridge 1 plate 758 brought bad seeing (4"), a recurrence of PR 1578 (guide fiber 3 not in guide frame) and high wind. The first exposure was lost due to poor seeing. The 2nd exposure was ended prematurely when we closed at 07:40 due to high wind. During final shutdown check it was discovered that the grade 2 LN2 was leaking. Pressure as of 12:16 was 400 psi. The quick connection on the south side of the doghouse is the primary suspect (Pete said he heard it hissing when he jiggled it). The bottle of Snoop was frozen so we couldn't confirm this. Spectrograph chiller dewar pressure was at 42 psi by the end of the night. The secondary dewar pressure for the imager stayed around 8 for the duration of the night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2760 100 O ignore 138.02 143.06 48 doghouse ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 12094, plate -9999 ------- 23:31 12094 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12095, plate 744 ------- 16.1 16.2 16.3 16.9 * 00:18 12095 0.0 bias (* when combined with previous data) 01:04 12096 10.0 flat 01:06 12097 2.0 arc 01:28 12098 1100.0 target 01:46 12099 901.0 target 01:52 12100 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12101, plate 751 ------- 16.8 16.1 15.2 16.0 02:11 12101 10.0 flat 02:13 12102 2.0 arc 02:32 12103 901.0 target 02:55 12104 900.0 target 03:15 12105 1003.0 target 03:21 12106 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12107, plate 752 ------- 19.0 17.0 18.4 14.0 03:38 12107 10.0 flat 03:41 12108 2.0 arc 03:59 12109 902.0 target 04:21 12110 1102.0 target 04:48 12111 1201.0 target 04:55 12112 240.0 smear 04:57 12113 10.0 flat 04:59 12114 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12115, plate 230 ------- 21.6 19.8 15.6 17.1 05:32 12115 10.0 flat 05:34 12116 2.0 arc 05:57 12117 1101.0 target 06:15 12118 902.0 target 06:34 12119 1000.0 target 06:41 12120 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12121, plate 758 ------- Nothing usable. 07:10 12121 10.0 flat 07:12 12122 2.0 arc 07:31 12123 1001.0 target 07:37 12124 149.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:10 4 744 1007773824 0.005724 0.000437 0.004193 0.999690 19:16 5 751 1007777763 0.007168 -0.000836 -0.008487 0.999610 20:46 6 752 1007783165 0.004314 0.001246 -0.014900 0.999610 21:19 6 752 1007785159 0.003122 0.001478 -0.020325 0.999590 22:42 9 230 1007790133 0.004423 -0.000907 0.004504 0.999840 00:15 1 758 1007795743 -0.000600 -0.001811 -0.005337 0.999990 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4737 Stays: JL4738 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:09 4 744 0.99969 3060 3722 60 1 71.6 1.2 8 6 - 1.5 19:15 5 751 0.99961 3850 4376 60 -11 71.9 0.5 16 26 - 1.5 20:45 6 752 0.99961 3850 4345 10 -56 61.9 -0.9 13 6 - 1.5 22:40 9 230 0.99984 1579 2481 10 -19 55.8 -2.3 16 44 - 2.2 00:15 1 758 0.99999 99 1255 10 110 56.2 -4.1 26 74 - 4.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 16:09 37 6 1 250 (WSW) 179 - pcl 16:41 36 6 7 2 (N) 154 - pcl 17:13 34 6 7 357 (NNW) 136 - pcl 17:44 34 7 19 0 (N) 157 - pcl 18:14 34 8 18 21 (NNE) 178 - pcl 18:45 33 9 11 53 (NE) 180 - pcl 19:15 32 10 16 26 (NNE) 181 - clear 19:46 32 10 9 14 (NNE) 224 - clear 20:19 31 11 8 16 (NNE) 188 - pcl 20:49 30 12 14 6 (N) 197 - pcl 21:22 29 12 20 20 (NNE) 177 - pcl 21:54 28 11 13 32 (NNE) 184 - clear 22:25 27 11 17 32 (NNE) 144 - clear 22:55 27 11 18 43 (NE) 125 - clear 23:26 25 10 13 75 (ENE) 176 - clear 23:56 25 7 17 75 (ENE) 141 - clear 00:29 23 2 20 70 (ENE) 134 - clear 01:02 21 10 21 71 (ENE) 207 - clear 01:33 20 11 35 68 (ENE) 163 - clear 02:05 19 12 36 72 (ENE) 117 - clear 02:38 19 12 30 70 (ENE) 129 - clear 03:11 19 13 31 69 (ENE) 164 - clear 03:42 18 13 39 72 (ENE) 138 - clear 04:14 18 14 26 73 (ENE) 125 - trace 04:47 18 13 29 63 (ENE) 101 - 05:17 17 13 19 79 (E) 136 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:30 Doors open, fans on. 00:00 Enclosure off. 07:40 Enclosure on, doors closed (high wind). 09:00 Fans off (rising humidity). Around 17:03 - 17:40 (Murmur Time) there was a flurry caused by a true fiducial error (following an earlier axis abort). Those we understand. However, we later saw errors on all three axes, some with excessive errors (e.g. 168000 ticks), some possible real (~650 ticks). I think most occured during the slews to instrument change. In all cases, the next crossings of the fiducials were ok. The ambient temperature was around 0C to -2C. Below are the messages seen up to 21:45 Murmur Time.
