APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 3, 2002 (MJD 52551) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Dan Long (APO) Pete Newman (APO) French Leger (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- 1) Finish shake: o Spectro monthly checkout o BiasGen and BiasCheck o Check collimation with imager o Astrometric calibration scan o Spectro pointing check o Focus the guider o Exercise all specMech options o Test 3.5m mask for cloud camera 2) Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectro monthly checkout completed. BiasCheck and BiasGen performed. 3.5m mask for the cloud camera tested. Guider focused. Spectrograph pointing tests conducted but results were inconclusive. Collimation checked with imager, no adjustments necessary. We defined a new set of nominal mirror values (both primary and secondary). An imaging scan of a portion of 82S was obtained under acceptable/good conditions. This scan also serves as a UCAC scan. The test versions of iop and mcp were declared current. We tested one of the 4 M31 commands and it appeared to work. It was photometric the entire night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pete received the telescope at 22:15Z and completed Spectro monthly checkout at 02:50Z. The length is a bit excessive though. It blocks from a heading of about 270 degrees to 340 degrees and it only needs to block from about 295 to 330 degrees. The guider wasn't talking and needed to be rebooted. However, the guider reboot caused problems with the Mac due to the fibers being plugged in too early and the Mac ended up needing to be rebooted as well. Focusing the guider proved to be more difficult than expected. The focusing ring reached its limit way before the guider was in focus. French removed the camera and adjusted the camera focus so that we could focus the guider. After substantial time and effort in the cold, the guider was brought into focus. Many thanks French! The spectrograph pointing tests were conducted by going to the field of plate 648 and various FK5 stars using both of the pointing models taken last night (one allowing rotator movement, the other keeping the rotator fixed). The offsets for the two models pointing at plate 648 are given in the OFFSETS section (rotator movement model at 05:15Z, rotator fixed model at 05:20Z). The offsets are fairly large but comparable. Results were similar (fairly large but comparable offsets) for the FK5 stars. Four FK5 stars ranging from 10 degrees to 120 degrees away (in AZ) from the original field were used. The offsets for the FK5 stars were similar to or smaller than those for the original field and the offsets for the two models were again comparable. The bottom line was that it didn't seem to matter which pointing model was used. At this point, the plate that was mounted had expired. Since skies were photometric and the 3.5m was reporting good seeing, we decided to proceed to imaging tests and forego the specMech tests for the moment. While getting on the sky for imaging (run 3354, 82S), there was a PTVME problem that killed the servers. The servers were restarted. Shortly after this, it was discovered that skippy would not run from iop. See the PROBLEMS section for the traceback. Skippy ran ok from astrom although it did not appear to find many matches. Skippy eventually ran a few times from iop but did not give meaningful results. We checked the collimation. The donuts looked a little squashed in dewar 1 but were round and even everywhere else. No adjustments were made. JEG donut frames are frame 85 = +300, frame 94 = 0, frame 103 = -300 and can be found in /data/photo/optics/52551/ The seeing deteriorated after we stopped adjusting the focus and later the focus loop ran away. We recovered the focus and when the seeing improved we stopped this run and started another in the hopes it would at least be good enough for a UCAC scan. Skippy gave meaningful results for this run (3355, 82S). Not sure why it wouldn't work on the previous run as it was the same part of the sky being scanned. Conditions for run 3355 turned out to be acceptable/good and this scan should be good both for science and for a UCAC scan. This scan ran about 10 minutes past moonrise. The test versions of iop and mcp were declared current. After moonrise, we started the M31 test (run 3356). Seeing remained good even though we were looking through 2 airmasses. This data may be useful in its own right as the only problem with it is the moon and the beginning of twilight towards the end. Perhaps someone should have a look. The specific command we tested was doM31 1.59800 31.12571 0.99032 N M31 and it appeared to work. In r, the galaxy began showing up around frame 75 and peaked around frame 84. It appeared mostly in dewar 3 and a little in dewar 4 but not much in the others. Something (M32?) showed up briefly in one of the astrometric dewars. Note that the center of M31 appears in the M31 S strip (not the one we tested). Another PTVME error occurred at this time and we lost the crates again. A reset fixed the problem. The log entry for run 3355 failed to appear in the imaging summary. This may be due to the fact that we declared iop (and mcp) current during run 3355. The imagingSummary log entry for this run was made by hand and so the values are only approximate. We created a new set of nominal mirror values for both the primary and secondary. It was photometric the entire night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3351 22:16Z 22:39Z 100 O 55.79 61.47 40 ignore 3352 00:42Z 01:09Z 100 O 92.36 99.18 57 bias in doghouse but tbars were unlatched 3353 06:34Z 06:38Z 82 S -178.92 -178.04 20 ignore 3354 06:41Z 08:07Z 82 S -177.28 -155.53 159 ignore JEG donuts 3355 08:08Z 10:50Z 82 S -166 -124 ? science 82 S; also UCAC The above entry was made by hand and therefore all values are approximate. 3356 11:10Z 12:09Z 100 O -110.24 -95.51 110 engineering M31 test ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3354: Collimation check.
