APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday October 8, 2002 (MJD 52556) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Daniel Long Jurek Krzesinski Pete Newman (swing) Craig Loomis (solved a strange .ssh problem) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Afternoon archiver problems - see problem section for details. Closed most of the night due to high humidity. Opened about 08:30Z and done one photoz plate (cart 4 plt 808) plus one exposure with a good S/N on a normal plate cart 5 plt 927. Minor problem with AZ too large to correct error solved quickly (see the log) - moths? Flats at different rotator position for Jim, taken while we were closed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- There were some problems with the archiver during the afternoon which culminated in crate reboot. See problems section for details. 00:57Z High humidity, we switched off fans and closed the enclosure. WAITING. 02:45Z Since we were closed and waiting, Dan decided, that we might take a set of flats at different rotator positions for Jim - so we did. A set of guider flats were taken for Jim to analyze for image motion. They were taken at 45 degree intervals starting at 0 and finishing at 360. The altitude was at 30 during this rotator sweep. The data is on Landru in /home/long/Data/guidertests52556 ( I couldn't put it in Jim's directory ). filename description -------- ----------- gimg0585.fits bias gimg0586.fits bias gimg0587.fits 20s dark gimg0588.fits 20s dark gimg0589.fits 20s dark gimg0590.fits 20s dark gimg0591.fits 5s flat rot=0 gimg0592.fits 5s flat rot=45 gimg0593.fits 5s flat rot=90 gimg0594.fits 5s flat rot=135 gimg0595.fits 5s flat rot=180 gimg0596.fits 5s flat rot=225 gimg0597.fits 5s flat rot=270 gimg0598.fits 5s flat rot=315 gimg0599.fits 5s flat rot=360 gimg0600.fits 5s flat rot=360 gimg0601.fits 5s flat rot=360 gimg0602.fits 5s flat rot=360 gimg0603.fits bias gimg0604.fits bias 08:30Z We opened and mounted cart 4 plt 808 (photoz29). Stars found with fk5. Plate done with 5 exposures (S/N > 30) 11:26Z Cart 5 plt 927 mounted. We've got too large to correct error in azimuth, and we couldn't find stars. AZ axis aborted after we tried to force the fiducial, then we couldn't release a break on AZ axis (using telrun: axis init), so we initialized AZ with MCP menu and that worked... Than we saw our fk5 star. We got one useful exposure at the beginning of the twilight for that plate - no smear. Endnight run ok. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 16496, plate -9999 ------- 23:07 16496 0.0 bias 00:21 16497 0.0 bias ----- sequence 16498, plate 808 ------- 09:07 16498 10.0 flat 09:10 16499 2.0 arc 09:33 16500 1200.1 target 09:56 16501 1200.1 target 10:19 16502 1200.1 target 10:42 16503 1200.1 target 11:05 16504 1200.1 target 11:12 16505 240.0 smear 11:15 16506 10.0 flat 11:18 16507 2.0 arc ----- sequence 16508, plate 927 ------- 11:44 16508 10.0 flat 11:46 16509 2.0 arc 12:04 16510 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:06Z 4 808 -5.22 0.0032 57.09 0.0015 175.55 0.0014 1.000300 11:53Z 5 927 -5.77 0.0019 57.06 -0.0011 175.09 -0.0141 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5577 Stays: JL5584 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:06Z 4 808 1.00030 -2961 -1442 -150 -5 57.1 6.8 8 348 gdr 1.2 11:54Z 5 927 1.00027 -2665 -1267 -200 73 65.5 7.4 5 14 - 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:09Z 46 41 9 9 (N) 217 - Partly Cloudy 23:40Z 45 40 1 21 (NNE) 209 - Partly Cloudy 00:12Z 44 40 8 6 (N) 210 - Partly Cloudy 00:45Z 43 40 9 17 (NNE) 227 - Mostly Clear 01:01Z 43 40 10 15 (NNE) 200 - 01:33Z 43 38 6 1 (N) 266 - 02:05Z 43 39 6 8 (N) 166 - 02:37Z 42 39 7 6 (N) 205 - 03:09Z 42 38 4 358 (NNW) 154 - 03:42Z 43 38 6 329 (NNW) 155 - 04:14Z 43 39 7 323 (NW) 202 - 04:46Z 43 39 9 340 (NNW) 234 - 05:18Z 43 40 10 339 (NNW) 260 - 05:50Z 42 40 9 326 (NW) 263 - 06:23Z 42 40 6 341 (NNW) 262 - 06:55Z 42 40 4 12 (NNE) 314 - 07:27Z 43 39 8 347 (NNW) 282 - 07:59Z 43 38 10 341 (NNW) 242 - 08:31Z 43 36 8 350 (NNW) 232 - 09:04Z 43 35 8 349 (NNW) 282 - 09:35Z 44 35 11 317 (NW) 249 - 10:05Z 43 34 8 355 (NNW) 256 - 10:37Z 46 33 10 324 (NW) 232 - 11:10Z 45 34 1 325 (NW) 258 - 11:41Z 45 35 7 3 (N) 261 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:25Z Doors open, Fans on 00:45Z Doors closed, Fans off 08:30Z Telescope opened, fans on 12:15Z Enclosuure closed, Fans off ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_84_0a Watcher: v2_19_0 MCP: v5_13_5 TPM: tpm_v2_17_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: 2.6.5 sdssProcedures: v1.53 SoS: v4_9_10 hoggPT: v1_5_8 plate-mapper: v4_1_0 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0810 0.0820 Axial B 0.7930 0.7890 Axial C 0.0820 0.0730 Trans D -9.1110 -9.1050 Lateral E 1.8580 1.8520 Lateral F 1.4110 1.4170 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650. There had been some ptvme link trouble while she was taking her data, which may have had something to do with it. Nodes 2, 3, 5, and 6 had shut down the -2 drives and there was a 130 frame backlog in the queue for those nodes. We went into the computer room to have a look and indeed the -2 drives were unloaded, but there were no flashing error codes on them. While we were in the computer room, the -1 drives unloaded as well. During this time host was also being rebooted. When host came back up, we started and iop and checked the archiver status and it was disabled for all drives in nodes 2, 3, 5, 6. We went through the procedure for an unresponsive archiver, and the archInit didn't work, so we went ahead and rebooted the crates. Once the crates came back up we loaded the tapes , told it to use all the drives, enabled the archiver and let it resume. Curiously, there was nothing left in the queue to archive. It seems the short time we were in the computer room before the id*-1 drives rewound would not have been long enough to archive 130+ frames. Maybe the watcher was one of the first things to go when the host reboot started and the 130 number was old. In any case, the archiver worked fine on a bias. This was using the same tapes as Connie had written her calibration data to. It took some time to position for append, but apparently nothing bad had happened to the tapes through all this.
