APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 11, 2002 (MJD 52559) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman (swing) Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta Howard Brewington (SDSSobserver candidate) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Since there are few clouds in the west at sunset and clouds coming from the west according to the weather map, we start with Spectro during the moon to see if it is photometric and seeing is good. If it is photometric, we switch to do Apache wheel while the moon is up. If it is still photometric and seeing is good after moonset, we do science imaging. If not, we go back to spectro or continue Apache wheel. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The sky got cloudier and cloudier as we observed tonight. Three plates (648, 1118. 669) done and two plates (1028, 1155) with good exposures. Howard got to see what a night of spectro observing is like at APO. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Day Activity ------------------- PT communications problems Craig and Pete spent some hours trying to trip the "no communications with mt" error without success. However, they did determine where in the MOP code the underlying problem is being hidden with incomplete error information. When and if the error occurs again (symptoms: a sequence of exposures does not complete, leading to a MOP time-out alarm), please enter the following command into MOP: cc ping and note the MOP and murmur log output this generates. This is the command that leads to the "Error: no communcations with mt" message from an iack command. Where the failure occurs at the start of a sequence after a telescope slew (as it has mostly been), please also go to the PT and note if the dome and telescope are appropriately aligned (i.e. has the dome slew followed the telescope slew as it should). Then, recover from the error as before with cameraDetatch iack and continue observing. --------- Counterweight #1 (SE corner) The lower limit switch on counterweight #1 (SE corner) is inoperative, so driving the counterweights to the lower limit using the mcpMenu leads to that counterweight hitting the hard limit switch. The symptoms are (1) a loud "clunk" as that counterweight hits bottom, (2) an mcpMenu display NOT showing the "L" for that counterweight, and (3) a stopping value around 15 instead of 25. Until this is fixed, do not command the counterweight the the lower limit, use the value 25 instead. --------- TEC coolant The coolant in the instrument thermo-electric cooling system is showing a pale brown color. French is aware, and say's they are checking the filters regularly. It may be due to brass from the calibration lamp cooling blocks. Altitude axis slip and fiducial correction During pre-flight checks, the altitude #1 encoder slip detection light was found tripped. The engineers had been repeatedly slewing the telescope during the day, so this may have occurred then. On the first slew after powering up during pre-flight, the altitude fiducial correction was too large at ~650 ticks. The next fiducial was accepted and further slews produced acceptable corrections. Azimuth barcode scanner We note that the bar-code scanner for the azimuth axis seems to be switched on permanently. Anyone know how to turn it off, or back to turn-on-at-fiducial mode? Night Activity =============== Cartridge 6 Plate 1028 ------------------------ We FK5ed to find the field while setting up in twilight. Because of the moon, we got sky-residual warning in SoS. b1's smear is in red --- only 1/3 of S/N compared to the other chips. We did not finish this plate, but got good S/N. We could hvae finished this plate, but a higher priority plate became available. To finish this plate, we would have needed 2 more 20min exposures. By then, we would have time to get maybe an exposure or so for the higher priority plate. So we decided to switch. Cartridge 2 Plate 648 ------------------------ Stars on gotoField. The seeing is marginal, but the efficiency is very good. Small clouds started to appear in the cloud camera. Naked eye could not see anything. SoS reported bad sky residual for this plate (sdR-r2-00016546.fit) as well. Cartridge 9 Plate 669 --------------------------- Stars on gotoField. We saw "ski-residual"warnings on this one also. Clouds causing it?? There are more clouds moving in and the seeing is getting worse. Combined with the previous exposures, we finished this plate in two exposures. Cartridge 3 Plate 1118 ------------------------ Stars on gotoField. Finished in three exposures. Smear are all in red. We declare this plate done since there is no point in redoing smear. Cartridge 8 Plate 1155 ------------------------- Stars on gotoField. More clouds but radar shows no rain. During the 5th exposure, the efficiency dropped a lot and never recovered. So we stopped the exposure. We are one exposure short to declare this plate done. No smear was taken since we had lots of clouds. The cloud camera stalled while we were observing this plate and we did a scanstop/scanstart to unstall. Cartridge 5 Plate 927 ------------------------- We mounted this plate to see if we can get something useful between clouds. We did a FK5 before acquiring the field. The efficiency was low, but we decided to get some exposures in hopes of getting something. After taking preCalib, the efficiency was too low to bother opening the shutter. So we waited... We tried a 20min exposure to get crappy S/N. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3390 21:44Z 22:03Z 100 O 55.48 60.26 46 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 16533, plate -9999 ------- 21:42 16533 0.0 bias 01:04 16535 0.0 bias ----- sequence 16536, plate 1028 ------- 24.8 19.1 26.3 21.6 01:42 16536 10.0 flat 01:44 16537 2.0 arc 02:11 16538 1200.1 target 02:34 16539 1200.1 target 02:57 16540 1200.1 target 03:05 16541 240.0 smear 03:08 16542 10.0 flat 03:10 16543 2.0 arc ----- sequence 16544, plate 648 ------- 20.2 19.3 20.4 19.6 03:27 16544 10.0 flat 03:30 16545 2.0 arc 03:55 16546 1200.1 target 04:14 16547 900.1 target 04:32 16548 900.1 target 04:39 16549 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16550, plate 669 ------- 20.0 18.1 18.2 18.4 05:02 16550 10.0 flat previous: 18.5 15.7 17.1 18.0 05:04 16551 2.0 arc ----------------------------------- 38.5 33.8 35.3 36.4 05:29 16552 1200.1 target 05:47 16553 900.1 target ----- sequence 16554, plate 1118 ------- 26.3 15.7 24.6 18.8 06:11 16554 10.0 flat 06:14 16555 2.0 arc 06:33 16556 900.1 target 06:51 16557 900.1 target 07:09 16558 900.1 target 07:17 16559 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16560, plate 1155 ------- 28.9 27.3 27.3 28.2 07:35 16560 10.0 flat 07:38 16561 2.0 arc 08:05 16562 1200.1 target 08:28 16563 1200.1 target 08:55 16564 1500.1 target 09:23 16565 1500.1 target 09:54 16566 1007.0 target 10:04 16567 10.0 flat 10:07 16568 2.0 arc ----- sequence 16569, plate 927 ------- useless S/N obtained. 10:37 16569 10.0 flat 10:39 16570 2.0 arc 11:38 16571 1200.1 target 11:48 16572 400.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:04Z 6 1028 28.84 0.0035 53.77 -0.0003 203.84 0.0010 0.999860 04:03Z 2 648 28.60 0.0035 42.98 -0.0003 204.05 0.0010 0.999880 05:23Z 9 669 11.32 0.0025 56.69 0.0002 189.43 0.0092 1.000090 06:17Z 3 1118 -7.20 0.0042 56.98 0.0017 173.89 0.0093 1.000120 09:28Z 8 1155 -36.84 0.0031 51.20 0.0012 149.65 -0.0072 1.000070 11:30Z 5 927 75.91 0.0009 63.24 -0.0001 242.32 -0.0168 1.000330 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5615 Stays: JL5616 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:05Z 6 1028 0.99986 1381 2139 -175 29 53.8 11.4 16 266 1.4 04:03Z 2 648 0.99988 1184 1986 -200 29 43.0 10.2 13 266 1.3 05:23Z 9 669 1.00009 -888 175 -250 11 56.7 10.5 16 272 1.5 06:16Z 3 1118 1.00012 -1184 -71 -250 -7 57.0 10.7 16 266 1.5 09:28Z 8 1155 1.00007 -690 330 -275 -37 51.2 10.2 6 17 1.7 11:31Z 5 927 1.00033 -3258 -1828 -275 76 63.3 10.1 11 1 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:24Z 58 29 21 248 (WSW) 162 - 21:57Z 57 27 14 264 (W) 172 - 22:29Z 59 27 17 262 (W) 163 - 23:02Z 58 26 15 264 (W) 196 - 23:34Z 57 27 17 270 (W) 185 - 00:10Z 56 28 16 275 (W) 210 - 00:51Z 52 26 17 244 (WSW) 186 - 01:24Z 52 26 16 267 (W) 221 - 01:57Z 52 25 14 266 (W) 276 - 02:27Z 51 23 16 263 (W) 248 - 02:59Z 51 23 18 263 (W) 189 - 03:31Z 50 23 13 269 (W) 220 - 04:03Z 50 24 13 266 (W) 194 - 04:36Z 51 24 16 267 (W) 191 - 05:08Z 50 24 11 288 (WNW) 227 - 05:42Z 51 24 15 283 (WNW) 181 - 06:14Z 51 24 18 274 (W) 208 - 06:46Z 50 24 13 268 (W) 232 - 07:18Z 51 23 13 283 (WNW) 231 - 07:50Z 51 23 11 300 (WNW) 211 - 08:21Z 50 25 14 316 (NW) 256 - 08:54Z 49 26 6 4 (N) 367 - 09:27Z 50 23 6 348 (NNW) 499 - 09:59Z 50 23 10 359 (NNW) 478 - 10:31Z 50 22 7 353 (NNW) 648 - 11:04Z 50 21 11 355 (NNW) 627 - 11:36Z 50 21 11 358 (NNW) 600 - 12:09Z 49 21 9 0 (N) 559 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:45 Enclosure open, Fans on 11:50Z Enclosure closed, fans off.
