APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday January 7, 2003 (MJD 52647) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Dan Long Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- When the humidity allowed, we got data on four plates (1130, 1073, 809, 1154), and finished one ( 809 ), under clear skies, light moon, and variable seeing. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing Shift: Norm reports that the grade 2 N2 system now seems to be leak free, but we should keep an eye on it. Afternoon checkout went without problems. See end of this section for today's spectro focus check results. Night Shift: 01:35Z Opening after humidity delay. Fans On, Enclosure Open all within 5 minutes or so of this time. Got a too large to correct error on altitude. It was real, about 2200 counts on two subsequent fiducials. Steph had noticed one in azimuth when she did the afternoon check and corrected it, but altitude was fine at that time. 02:10Z finally got spectros to fill, even with rot at 30 it took nearly half an hour to pump 35 lb into the 10 l dewars. 02:12Z Cartridge 1 1130 6.7 5.1 8.1 5.7 munn49 7.0 5.0 9.0 5.4 52645 ------------------- 13.7 10.1 17.1 11.1 Guide stars on the slew. Skies clear. Initial seeing estimate 1.7 with efficiencies in the mid 70s. After only a short time, seeing blew up to over 3" at times in later exposures. This coincided with the dewpoint depression going from 9 to 2 in the space of a minute. After about 5 minutes the dewpoint depression returned to 9 and the seeing went back to 1.7", so most of this exposure was done in good seeing. One exposure is all we could get before the plate went beyond its observable window. 03:15Z Cartridge 2 1073 11.4 8.5 11.0 8.8 merged48 Guide stars on the slew, in all fibers to boot. Decent seeing ( 1.5 - 1.8 ), yielding 4s and 5s in 15 minute exposures. Time ran out on the plate before we could finish it 04:20Z Cartridge 3 809 17.0 13.6 17.8 16.4 photoz29 19.7 18.0 18.3 21.2 52644 ------------------- 36.7 31.6 36.1 37.6 Done Guide stars on slew. Focus different by 100 from previous plate. Seeing not as good. Started out at 1.9. By the time the second exposure started, seeing had reach 2.2". Efficiencies still showing over 70% though. By the end of the second exposure seeing was over 2.5" and efficiency had dropped below 60%. This even though the moon had already set. We finished this photoZ plate when combined with last night's data. Cigar Dude grinned approvingly from above. 05:45Z Cartridge 4 1154 9.3 11.5 9.1 9.2 fstars51 Hint of guide stars on slew. Seeing now awful ( 3.5m reports similar degradation ). A seven point focus sequence was virtually flat at nearly 3 arcseconds. Efficiency mid 30s at best. Toward the end of the first exposure the seeing improved to the low 2s and efficiency approached 50%. 3s and 4s on the first exposure. Seeing much better at the start of the 2nd exposure, under 2 arcseconds. Humidity on the rise. Figures... the seeing is getting better. Second exposure has good signal, but the humidity is too high to stay open. 07:00Z Had to close due to humidity. We did not re-open.
