APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 27, 2003 (MJD 52787) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long with a big grin and an M3 - the new SDSS HP King Scot Kleinman with a TT - the first SDSS HP King Atsuko Nitta with an S4 - the fleeting SDSS HP Queen ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We completed 30S 36 --> 63. We found out that the telescope pointing and rotator positions are worse when we cleared the offsets from last night. Usually they improve when the offsets from previous spectring are cleared. Humidity delayed our sciencing and also forced us to close early. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- One problem during the afternoon checkout. The alt-1 slip trip repeatedly set while coming down in altitude at about 57:40 and 48:40. The balance was a little off, but tweaking that didn't stop the trips. The telescope was not hitting the windbaffle ( until the trip set the windbaffle brake and the telescope bounced off of it ). The drive surfaces and encoder wheels looked free of moths. The repeatable position of the trips and the 9 degree period would seem to indicate something stuck to one of the encoders either the axis encoder or the slip detection one. On the fifth pass trying to debug the situation, the telescope moved through with no trips and no altitude motions after that caused a trip. Although we see no direct evidence, moths are suspected (always a reasonable assumption :). The spectrographs did not need refocusing. Night ------- We put the imager on since the weather looked good, but the humidity started to rise close to closure limit. We wait and took on-scope bias. The humidty seem to stay at dew point diff around 3C. We decided to open and pay attention to the humidity and close immidiately if it starts to climb up. Run 3957 31S start=lambda19 -------------------------------- Focus is good from the beiginning of the run. skippy reports pointing and rotoator are all good. SoKent says the seeing is good from the beginning. frame 25 lambda=24 start of science. 04:08Z ln2 empty watcher error for imager triggered when ln2 fill started. 04:15Z We closed. The top of the dog house felt a bit wet and we did not feel comfortable staying open although the dew point diff was above the closure limit. Seeing worsened by this point anyhow, so although there are some useful data here, there is probably not enough to be reduced. Run 3958 30S ------------- 05:15Z We reopen as we are confident that humidity is no longer a problem (air temperature was no longer dropping and the dew point also decresed). We cannot start with the highest priority 31S as the axis rate will be too high. So we go to the next stripe, 30S. In focus by frame 14 skippy says pointing and rotator are good. SoKent shows the data are good from the beginning. We noticed that we forgot to clear the offsets from last night (although Scot looked at the beginning of the previous scan and thought he saw 0 offsets), but since skippy is happy, we decided not to stop the run and continue on. frame 30 lambda=31 start of science. frame 210 lambda=63 end of science. frame 223 lambda=65 end of rampdown. frame 226 lambda65.7 end of the run. Run 3959 31S -------------- We cleared offsets from last night. focus is good from the beginning. seeing is good from the beginning. skippy repeatedly failed and skyGang showed many more catalogue stars compared to observed stars, about 3 to 5 or so, in the field. The pointing must be off. There was "no fiducial error too large to correct" error. We stopped the run and reslewed to the field, after passing by a se of fiducials to verify that. When we scanned this stripe at the beginning of the night before we closed due to humidity, skippy ran fine and the skippy said our pointing and rotator was good then. We are puzzled. We tried with and without the offsets we had earlier, and still netier skippy nor skyGang gave results. Run 3960 31S ---------------- skippy failed and skyGang showed 3 observed stars vs. many catalogue stars. Again, there are no fidicial errors. We stop the run. We decided to try 30N seeing as how by now, we couldn't hope to finish this strip, but it would be possible to get all of 30N. While trying to go to 30N, the AZ brake came on twice. Watcher complained: azimuth (MGT: bad az state ABORT_EVENT: ID_ERROR_LIMIT (2003-05-28 08:17:55Z sdssmcp): 2003-05-28 08:18:07Z ) No slip, nothing around the telescope that looked like it would have caused any AZ abort. Another try to slew was successful. What caused those AZ aborts? Run 3961 30N -------------- 08:30Z At this point, Scot noticed that his iop session was no longer talking to astrom. He did not save the error message that might be related to this problem that popped up in a TK window saying something about wrong # of argument to murSend. Since it was working during the last run 3960, whatever caused this happened between 08:16Z and 08:30Z. After failing to get skippy or skyGang working without the offsets from earlier, we put them back in and got both skippy and skyGang to produce meaningful results. We put back the offsets from last night which we cleared shortly before the skippy problem started. With the offset back in place, we ran skippy successfully.. Run 3962 30N ------------------ seeing and focus is good from the beginning skippy reports our pointing and rotator position is good (finally). frame 26 lambda=36 start of science Air temp is starting to decrease causing the humidity to start rising. As the humidity rises, the seeing worsened. We check the rails/dog house for sign of moisture. frame 30 lambda36.7 The seeing is now BAD. 09:30Z we stopped and closed due to high humidity. endNight is still running as I mail this log. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3955 22:56Z 23:07Z 100 O -61.77 -58.88 33 ignore 3956 03:11Z 03:32Z 100 O 2.21 7.49 49 bias 3957 31 S ignore Very short run.
