APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday November 15, 2003 (MJD 52959) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Critcal shake items then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- - Optical collimation checked and found to be good. - 2 hours imaging on 82S. - Spectro focus and image positions adjusted. - Good data on two plates, but none finished. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pre-flight checks: The ventilation intake filter at the base of the Glentek amplifier rack in the lower enclosure was found clogged. It was removed and smacked on the ground to clean it, but this was not complete. The filter is also falling apart, and had been inserted back-to-front, so the pull tab was at the rear. As it was not completely cleaned, it was replaced also back-to-front, but I think it is in need of replacement. There was no new water leaking into the lower enclosure, but we found puddles on the plastic sheeting over the west rack. We soaked these up with 3M Sorbent pads. The cover over the FF calibration lamp PSU was removed and the PSU powered up again. The Sorbent blankets that were drying the floor near the west door are tied to the west railings to dry out. During the night, we found the spectrograph 1 needed large (of order 10^3) shifts to achieve acceptable Wsigma and X position values. These seem excessive even for the ~7K difference in temperature since monthly check-out, and do not explain the difference between sp1 and sp2. Given the high humidity in the enclosure over the last few days, we are concerned that these events are linked. Is it possible to check the humidity _inside_ the spectrographs? Night: We need to check and adjust the optical collimation and _may_ make a pointing model before proceding to science. We start with the imager mounted to check and adjust collimation. Dan had already put the new mechanical collimation numbers into tdat:mir.dat per the conversation with Russell Owen (see sdss-apodaylog message 1181). The primary mirror was homed and relaxed with the telescope at 75 deg alt. The residual errors were small (<= 50). By ~01:20Z, the primary mirror temperature seems to be tracking ambient and the TPM graphics show it to be withing +-0.5K. The secondary outer top segments were 1.5K below ambient, and the lower central segments 1.5K above ambient. This fits the hypothesis that the exposed parts of the back plate of the secondary are super-cooling. The front-to-back difference (tpm_TM_M2_FB) was +0.4K. Observing sequence: Imaging: Collimation check: we scanned near the meridian on 82S, focussed and checked skippy. All was well, and our qualitative impression was that the FWHM across the imager was more uniform than before. We examined donuts (see imaging details section below) but found everything to be in good shape with some possible residual seconrary mirror thermal error. As seeing and pointing were good and the sky was photometric, we decided to make good use of the time and proceed to science imaging. See imaging details section below. At 05:45Z, the moon had risen, so we switched to spectropscpy, but with marginal dewpoint depression. Spectroscopy: We had to start the Macintosh guider software at the start of this process as it was stopped. We did not reboot the computer. 06:11Z Plate 1255, cartridge 4. Try 1 - no data obtained. With cleared offsets, an FK5 star fell just off the guide fibre. This plate is at dec=+26, which bodes well for not needing a new pointing model. Finding focus and guiding continues to be difficult due to the the faint guide stars on these plates. We mistakenly took our first science exposure before the preCals. We then discovered the Wsigma values were out of tolerance, so we adjusted those and then found the sp1 X positions were out of tolerance, too. See the problems section at the end of this log for details of the movements. We eventually restarted the plate from scratch: 09:18Z Plate 1255, cartridge 4. Not finished in 1 exposure, 900s. Taurus program plate requiring standard S/N, but we already have (S/N)^2 >= 8.8 from MJD 52946. 09:55Z Plate 1296, cartridge 5. Not done in 2 exposures, 2176s. Survey plate. Close to the moon. We found an FK5 star on the edge of the fibre with cleared offsets despite an uncorrected azimuth fiducial error of 691 ticks that arose during the slew to instChange. The second exposure was useless due to clouds, and we closed about an hour before twilight when humidity went over limits. endNight is running as this log is being mailed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4242 23:01Z 23:16Z 100 O 109.09 112.94 40 ignore 4243 01:17Z 01:31Z 100 O 143.22 146.77 38 bias Mounted, T-bars unlatched 4244 01:41Z 01:46Z 82 S 148.98 148.58 22 ignore 4245 01:52Z 02:22Z 82 S 148.56 156.11 64 engineering Donuts 4246 02:26Z 02:48Z 82 S 158.78 164.38 51 ignore 4247 02:50Z 05:47Z 82 S 159.33 -156.26 306 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Seeing quality determined by seeingRun unless stated otherwise.
