APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday February 17, 2004 (MJD 53053) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Five plates done: 1635, 1742, 1308, 1434, 1363 Jim's donuts done, (see the log for details). And probles: - a few with gGuide stopping after taking the first exposure. - with telescope pointing. First half and second half of the night required very different pointing. - spiralPattern not working properly due to time out on frames. - cartridge 9 - sp1 bundle of fiber came off the slit head. (Hercules is working on it) All details are in the night log. EndNight successfully completed tonight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Normal afternoon check. sp2 refocused. Since imager was on telescope at the start of the check, a real bias was taken. 00:30Z Doors Open, Fans On. Night: ------ Thin cloud at the evening, we start with spectroscopy. 01:22Z cart 4, plt 1635 - we've got too large to correct error on slew, but it was huge: over 36000. We didn't belive that and went for fk5 star (since we were still in twilight and was not sure we could easily see our guide stars yet), which we found with RA offset 10" east. 01:52:22Z startGuider 10 The guider took one frame. Then it did not update for about a while. No guider timer count down, no gcam message in TCC. No error message in the sop window. Just when we were about to stop and restart the guider, the next update happened. The time stampe the first guider image is 18:52 gimg1388.fits for the first image. 18:54 gimg1389.fits for the second image. 01:59Z Two stars in the guider (fibers 4, 5) seemes to be not centered properly, after precalib. We took additional gflat to see if that will correct the peroblem. It didn't, so we proceeded with observations. Plate done. 04:00Z cart 7 plt. 1742. Stars on slew. One more time we've got: 2004-02-18 04:00:31Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_E_trcErr correction for altitude 86086 is too large (at 60 deg). We ignored that one as well. 04:03:42 startGuider 10 Guider took one frame, than it didn't do anything for 3 minutes, than Atsuko lost her patiens and stopped the guider and restarted it again. We noted the following message in the TCC window this time. We hope this is helpful. 56 2 : Cmd="axis status" 0 0 I GCamReply="Time limit exceeded; exposure aborted" Upon Craig's recommendation, we checked the camera and all is fine. gcam status 0 8 > Started; Text="command queued"; Cmd="gcam status" 0 8 I Text="command executing" 0 8 I GCamID=1, 6; GCamInfo="SenSys", 768.0, 512.0, 12 0 8 I Received="1 1 0 0 0 0 nan 0 nan "image: binXY begXY sizeXY expTime camID temp"" 0 8 I Received="8.00 1500 params: boxSize (FWHM units) maxFileNum" Here are the time stamps of the start and stop mon commands: 2004-02-18 04:03:42Z startGuider10 2004-02-18 04:06:30Z startGuider 10 2004-02-18 04:06:32Z startGuider 10 Frame gimg0135 is the frame that was 1st frame from the first startGuider. Plate done. 06:40Z cart 2 plt 1434. Stars on slew. Plate done, but we got the following error: sdR-r2-00025146.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 146.859 at 7759.64 Ang (ignoring 5577) We did not note anything wrong with this exposure. It's photometric at the moment, but clouds on the satelite map are almost on us. We didn't want to risk, so decided to get another plate and see if those clouds remain north of us. 07:40Z cart 3 plt 1444. No stars. fk5 star used, but when we sticked the offsets and went back to the field, there was no guide stars. Then we went back to fk5 star and it was there. We started one circle spiralPattern - but found no star. Then we tried another one speral pattern with two circles and after first circle has been completed there was an fk5 star (why we didn't see it on a single circle spiralPattern?). The two circle spiral pattern didn't complete: sp1> spiralPattern 10 10 2 1 0 0 61.109000000000009 2 0 10 60.004999999999995 3 10 10 59.766999999999996 4 10 0 59.645999999999987 5 10 -10 59.804000000000002 6 0 -10 60.146999999999991 7 -10 -10 66.02600000000001 8 -10 0 59.824999999999989 9 -10 10 59.406000000000006 Error: Expected new guiderImage did not arrive. sp1> When we tried to use the offsets deduced from spiralPattern to find fk5, we didn't see it (slithead latches were extended, and the presure gauge on sp1 showed 90 psi). Upss - it might be because we didn't go back to the original position after it stopped in the middle of nowhere. We forgot that the spiralPattern stops and leaves the telescope wherever it is and not go back to the original position. After we wasted 20 minutes, we decided to unmount that cartridge and put the imager on since the photometric sky has been holding and thought it might last for another couple hours. 08:21Z Weather still photometric. Imager mounted. We went for stripe 25 S. Run 4474, after overshooting a couple of times we found a proper focus. As soon as we setup, the weather become nonphotometric :(. Since we have imager mounted, we started Jim's donuts (seeing below 1.2") while we see if the clouds will go away soon. The donuts are expected to take about 30 min. Without stopping the scan we scanstripe for equatorial stripe: 82 S, lambda -20. The weather is still nonphotometric. So we decided to go back to spectroscopy. Data were copied into: /data/photo/optics/53053 (host). ---------------------------------- 09:41Z Switched back to spectroscopy. cart 1 plt 1363. fk5 star not found. Started spiralPattern again! (there was nothing obvious that antyhing was wrong -- fiducial crossing, latches etc.). After 6 spiral pattern (which is about 2/3 of one spiral) images, we got again an error, that an image didn't arrive. Here is a trace back: sp1> tb Expected new guiderImage did not arrive. while executing "error "Expected new guiderImage did not arrive."" invoked from within "if {$newflg<1} { error "Expected new guiderImage did not arrive."; murmur "Expected new guiderImage did not arrive."; }" (procedure "exposeAndWait" line 16) invoked from within "exposeAndWait $expt " ("loop" body line 17) invoked from within "loop i 1 [expr $numIter + 1] { # echo $i $numIter $xc $yc $curalpha $curdelta # echo tcPut gcam doread $expt /center=($fiberx,$fibery) /size=($ ..." (procedure "spiralPattern" line 112) invoked from within "spiralPattern 20 10 1" Since spiralPattern refused to work, we tried to find fk5 star manualy by offsetting by hand and taking guider images. After some hunting we found it with offsets: RA: 25", DEC=-15" !!! Then we found the guide stars... Somtehing is wrong. Fiducial corrections were applied on all axies as we slewed to the field, and skippy was happy when we setup for 25, S stripe. And why we couldn't find guider stars after we found fk5 star on previous cartridge? We had no problem finding the guide stars once we found the fk5 star, unlike the previous plate. Plate done. 11:10Z cart 9 plt 1372. Stars on slew with the previous offsets. 11:13Z gGuide stopped again after the first exposure (frame gimg0671.fit). 11:17Z Atsuko restarted gGuide. After we took precalib, Atsuko started gGuide it took one exposure, than after 1 minute it showed the next one. SOS reported that flat and arc is not happy anymore for sp1 (r1 ngood fiber is red). Temperature didn't change more than 1 C. Sp2 slit had presure is 90 psi. sdR-r1-00025153.fit: WARNING: Reject arc. Number of arclines after bundle test=1 sdR-b1-00025153.fit: WARNING: Reject arc. Number of arclines after bundle test=1 sdR-b1-00025154.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this science exposure (need arc) sdR-r1-00025154.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this science exposure (need arc) While we took another flat and arc, we looked at the raw arc image: 25156 - That isn't right! something is bad - it looks like a whole bundle of fibers in arc in the middle of the r1 and b1 chips is slipped down/up quite a bit. Our second flat looks ok in sos, but it seems to us that this flat is also affected when we look at the raw flat immage. We inspected the sp1 slithead, but found nothing obvious. So we remounted the cartridge and took another arc. The problem is still there. We replaced the cartridge with another one (6, plt 1378). Flat and arc looked ok! So, that's cartrige 9 problem. We filed PR and notified French, who thinks that the glue, which keeps the bundle on the slit head started to came off. He will look at it closly today. Last minute notice - indeed French found a sticking out bundle of fibers esaly noticable on sp1. Why we didn't find it? - well, because we were looking at sp2 instead (sp1 is on the right site when we are at the telescope laptop, but when we are mounting the cartridge it's on the ... hmmm aparently we didn't figure that out - daaaa). 12:27Z At this point is too late to get any science (it's twilight already). We started endnight and put the telescope to bed. endNight finished ok. And we actually did rejoice. horrayyy! ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4474 21 2 34 -22.800 0.158 10.000 0.153 0.00219 270 70 4474 33 4 76 -21.900 0.867 10.500 0.404 0.00114 272 70 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25115, plate 1635 ------- 23:57 25115 10.0 flat 00:00 25116 2.0 arc 00:05 25117 2.1 arc 00:08 25118 2.1 arc 00:20 25119 2.1 arc 00:23 25120 2.1 arc ----- sequence 25121, plate -9999 ------- 00:34 25121 0.0 bias 00:41 25122 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25122, plate 1635 ------- 01:48 25123 10.0 flat 01:50 25124 2.0 arc 02:18 25125 900.1 target 02:41 25126 1200.1 target 03:04 25127 1200.1 target 03:26 25128 1200.1 target 03:49 25129 1200.1 target 03:52 25130 10.0 flat 03:55 25131 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25132, plate 1742 ------- 04:13 25132 10.0 flat 04:16 25133 2.0 arc 04:41 25134 1200.1 target 04:58 25135 700.1 target 05:13 25136 700.1 target ----- sequence 25137, plate 1308 ------- 05:45 25137 700.1 target 05:49 25138 10.0 flat 05:52 25139 2.0 arc yes we started with the wrong order. 06:11 25140 700.1 target 06:30 25141 1000.1 target ----- sequence 25142, plate 1434 ------- 06:44 25142 10.0 flat 06:46 25143 2.0 arc 07:06 25144 900.1 target 07:20 25145 600.1 target 07:33 25146 600.1 target ----- sequence 25147, plate 1363 ------- 10:06 25147 10.0 flat 10:08 25148 2.0 arc 10:30 25149 900.1 target 10:48 25150 900.1 target 11:06 25151 900.1 target ----- sequence 25152, plate 1372 ------- 11:21 25152 10.0 flat 11:24 25153 2.0 arc 11:44 25154 900.1 target 11:48 25155 10.0 flat 11:51 25156 2.0 arc this is the plate on cart 9 - problems with 12:06 25157 2.0 arc slit head. 12:19 25158 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:02Z 4 1635 -19.45 0.0049 49.69 0.0044 163.59 -0.0205 1.000220 05:34Z 8 1308 53.23 0.0051 57.17 0.0037 223.17 -0.0040 1.000170 10:19Z 1 1363 237.04 0.0026 63.89 0.0099 76.17 -0.0054 1.000240 11:29Z 9 1372 230.83 0.0036 67.31 0.0093 66.58 0.0044 1.000260 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7278 Stays: JL7279 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:02Z 4 1635 1.00022 -2171 -467 150 -19 49.7 4.2 7 356 gdr 1.4 05:34Z 8 1308 1.00017 -1678 -280 -50 53 57.2 7.4 6 283 gdr 1.2 10:19Z 1 1363 1.00024 -2369 -769 50 237 63.9 7.1 5 178 gdr 1.5 11:29Z 9 1372 1.00026 -2566 -939 50 231 67.3 7.5 1 173 gdr 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:59Z 41 7 0 253 (WSW) -9999 - Cirrus 00:30Z 41 7 2 289 (WNW) -9999 - 01:00Z 40 9 1 349 (NNW) -9999 - 01:20Z 40 10 8 5 (N) -9999 - 01:50Z 41 9 7 359 (NNW) -9999 - 02:22Z 41 10 5 353 (NNW) -9999 - 02:53Z 43 10 6 342 (NNW) -9999 - 03:23Z 43 14 6 275 (W) -9999 - 03:53Z 44 14 8 270 (W) -9999 - 04:23Z 44 15 7 267 (W) -9999 - 04:54Z 45 15 6 282 (WNW) -9999 - 05:26Z 45 14 6 292 (WNW) -9999 - 05:56Z 45 15 8 294 (WNW) -9999 - 06:27Z 44 12 6 329 (NNW) -9999 - 06:59Z 44 12 2 277 (W) -9999 - 07:32Z 45 10 1 235 (SW) -9999 - 08:04Z 45 10 2 199 (SSW) -9999 - 08:36Z 43 11 2 197 (SSW) -9999 - 09:09Z 44 10 1 188 (S) -9999 - 09:41Z 45 12 0 184 (S) -9999 - 10:13Z 44 12 5 180 (S) -9999 - 10:43Z 44 11 2 169 (S) -9999 - 11:14Z 44 8 3 180 (S) -9999 - 11:45Z 43 8 5 185 (S) -9999 - 12:15Z 41 8 5 181 (S) -9999 - 12:45Z 42 10 6 180 (S) -9999 - 13:16Z 42 9 7 184 (S) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Doors Open, Fans On. 01:00Z Enclosure Open. 01:00Z Telescope opened, dewars refilled. 13:09Z Telescope closed, hoses hooked up. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_128_0 Watcher: v2_29_0 MCP: v5_25_0 TPM: tpm_v2_37_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: 0 sdssProcedures: v1_84 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5430 0.5420 Axial B 0.6290 0.6390 Axial C 1.0970 1.0900 Trans D -8.4580 -8.4610 Lateral E 10.8839 10.8966 Lateral F 10.8458 10.8712 GALILS Commanded: 4600. -2850. 850. -9250. 18400. 17850.
