APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 13, 2004 (MJD 53139) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric all night. Imaging on 23N and 23S until ~08:00Z when seeing degraded badly, then spectroscopy with good data on two plates but none finished. We still have large ThetaF errors from skippy when imaging at high altitude. We think we need new flats and darks for the spectro guider, as hot pixels are becoming a problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Spectrograph 2 focus was adjusted during preflight checks - see last section of log for details. Photometric and moonless at sunset, so we start with imaging. See details sections below. On carefully checking the balance before starting imaging but after filling the spectrograph secondary LN2 dewars, we found the appropriate counterweight setting to be 680, not the "standard" 720. However, we don't know the fill state of the imager secondary dewars, and spectrograph+corrector balance was good at the standard counterweight position 270. During imaging, we again saw larger than usual ThetaF values from skippy, comparable to the values seen on MJD 53137 for the same altitude ranges. However, we did not track as high as last night, so ThetaF stayed within tolerance. We continued imaging until the seeing degraded badly at 07:48Z, then switch to spectroscopy, when we observed as follows (guide stars found on gotoField unless noted): 08:07Z Plate 1390, cartridge 2. Main survey. Not done in 3 exposures, 2700s. There seems to be a hot pixel in guide fibers 3 and 10 that is confusing the guider. Looks like we need a new set of flats and darks for the current temperature conditions (shake-up or sooner?). In the meantime, we disableFiber those two. We expected to finish this plate but the last exposure had much lower S/N than the first two. Unfortunately we did not see this until after we had switched to the next plate. 09:45Z Plate 1417, cartridge 7. Main survey. Not done in 2 exposures, 1800s. Guide stars just off the fibers with cleared offsets. A large shift in focus and poor seeing made set-up difficult. Morning twilight prevented us finishing the plate. endNight is running as this log is being mailed. We again ask the day crew to deal with the gangs tapes (photo tapes are shelved/stored) - thanks! ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4630 23:38Z 00:02Z 100 O -64.18 -58.27 49 ignore 4631 02:43Z 03:00Z 100 O -17.86 -13.50 42 bias Mounted, T-bars unlatched 4632 03:15Z 05:30Z 23 N -39.55 -5.69 240 science 4633 05:34Z 07:09Z 23 S 37.89 61.70 172 science 4634 07:13Z 07:50Z 23 S 47.59 56.67 73 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 4631, on-telescope bias with T-bars unlatched. ============================================================= Run 4632, strip 23 N, -38.0 <= lambda <= -6.0 including ramps.
