APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday September 16, 2004 (MJD 53265) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Scot Kleinman Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 72 S done from lambda = +125 to -168 with the caveat that there were 2 stretches of bad seeing (lambda = 145.6 to 157.5 and 180 to -174). Finished 1 plate (1907). Good data on 2 others (1883, 1559). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Early Morning: -------------- After last night's log had been mailed, we tried to get juno to read the imaging data tapes. The attempt failed with the following message: [tapehost@juno ~]$ apo_daily_tapes ABORT: Must run as tapehost on omaha, not tapehost on juno Swing: ------ From French's Day log: "Steve and I also looked at the interface between the truss and PSS hoping to find something amiss. All we found was a slightly loss alignment pin. We drove it home and then installed the alignment scope on the telescope and looked to see if we had moved anything. The M2 looked as good as when we set it up last week." Hopefully, this will not affect us, since French measured no change. If there are problems with either pointing or collimation, this is a likely cause. Spectro focus checked and adjusted. X position on sp1 also slightly adjusted (2 pix to the left). The rest of afternoon checkout was uneventful. Night: ------ While moving the telescope down to 6 degrees to remove the building, there was a combination of problems. The 15 degree stop failed to retract, there was a slip on both alt 1 and 2 and there was a windscreen touch in altitude. Not sure if these are related. We retracted the stop by hand, reset the slip detector and proceeded. When moving the telscope up after this, we had to force an altitude fiducial correction. We got no gang transfer errors from the watcher and had to force a teamster at around 02:07Z. This is the 3rd night in a row that we've had this problem and all 3 nights it's occurred between 02:00 and 03:00Z. The new stripeAxisRates has a weird bug. See the Problems section for details. The on-telescope bias still shows the same noise it's been showing for weeks. For those who are unfamiliar with the characteristics, here is the original report of the problem taken verbatim from the log of Aug. 14, 2004 (MJD 53232): "The doghouse bias shows a ripple or wave pattern that is visible most notably in g (dewars 2-6) and z (dewars 2, 3, 5, 6). Frame 46 for all chips from doghouse bias 4775 is on sdsshost in /data/photo/bias53232 and on phoenix in /data/photo/bias53232. Perhaps this is related to the imager problem we had last night (53231). Can someone please have a look?" We begin with imaging. Run 4835: On-telescope bias. The noise mentioned above is present in all frames. Run 4836: 72 S, start lambda = 121. Everything (focus, seeing, skippy) good by frame 15, lambda = 122.5. The cloud camera standard deviation is around 7 - 8 and there appears to be slight structure in the Gunn reduced cloud camera image but we are calling it photometric according to the Gunn criteria and proceeding. The seeing was quite variable during this run and the seeing changes according to SoK are as follows: changed from good to bad at frame 169, lambda = 145.6 changed from bad to good at frame 249, lambda = 157.5 changed from good to acceptable at frame 299, lambda = 165 changed from acceptable to good at frame 359, lambda = 174 changed from good to acceptable at frame 388, lambda = 178.4 changed from acceptable to bad at frame 399, lambda = 180 changed from bad to acceptable at frame 439, lambda = -174 The cloud camera's standard deviation varied between 5 and 8 until about 06:30Z (around frame 439, lambda = -174) when clouds definitely started to appear in the south. However, the clouds were far enough away from where we were pointing that we believed the data were uncompromised and we continued. When the clouds came within 15 degrees of where we were pointing we ended the drift (frame 489, lambda = -166). To summarize, we are calling 72 S done from lambda = +125 to -168 with the caveat that there were 2 stretches of bad seeing (lambda = 145.6 to 157.5 and 180 to -174). Run 4837: Donuts. This run was terminated after only a few frames due to clouds and deteriorating seeing. We switched to spectroscopy and when going to the first field we got an altitude fiducial too large to correct and had to cross another fiducial and force a correction. Plate 1907 (cartridge 7): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with last night's data (53264), this plate was finished in 2 exposures (2700 sec total). There was a whopping fiber warning and a call for a post-cal which came too late. Plate 1883 (cartridge 6): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 3 exposures (3600 sec total) before this plate expired. There was a whopping fiber warning. Plate 1559 (cartridge 2): Low z. Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 4 exposures (4500 sec total) before this plate expired. The post-cal request came too late. Scot worked on tccMon and there is now a test version (v2_7) for those who wish to try it. In the test version, SEGLong is called Mu and has only 2 significant figures after the decimal place. These were the only two changes. endNight is still running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
