APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday October 31, 2004 (MJD 53310) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Mike Harvanek (swing) John Barentine (volunteer) Support: Jon Brinkmann (by phone) Visitor: Rick Kessler (U. Chicago) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Pointing model and supernovae science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Given the fiducial work and difficulty generating tables we figured it prudent to put the engineering camera on and check pointing and create a new model before imaging tonight. The pointing was off about 75 arcseconds, almost all in elevation as you might expect. The new model has a sky rms of 2.3 arcseconds. The imager was mounted about 04:00Z. Pointing was good, with nuErr of about 5 arcseconds. Unfortunately with bright moon, mediocre seeing, and increasing patchy cloud, the hour of SN data taken in run 4922 is at best going to be a challenge to reduce. We closed due to clouds shortly before 06:00Z Clouds continued thickening and light snow began falling after 10:00Z. We did not reopen. There are new counterweight values after the bright time work. This is what we found for the most common instrument configurations. 90 for engcam with corrector 590 for imager 160 for spectro ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Alt fiducial errors were small (less than or around 100) and we were able to pin at 90 without trouble (thanks Steph!). We had a windscreen touch before opening: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-01 00:31:21Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-01 00:31:30Z) The ODH sensors started acting up about half an hour after we opened the doors and started the fans. In fact it was as we were preparing to move the enclosure it began to alarm and continued to alarm even after the enclosure had been fully opened and removed. The problematic sensor appeared to be the one in the cone. Jon Brinkmann was notified. Since flashing strobe lights adversely affect data, the sensor was disabled while we were observing. Night: ------ We began with the engineering camera mounted to take a pointing model. 01:00Z Opened, and filled spectro dewars. Slight delay due to ODH false alarms 01:35Z Checked center of rotation of engcam. Found to be within 2 pixels. 01:50Z Started standard 72 point model 04:00Z Switching to imager Run 4922 82 N from lambda 151 to 164 04:28Z 82 N 145 Skippy happy from the start 04:50Z In focus from frame 42, lambda 151 Seeing around 2 arcseconds.
