APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday May 7, 2005 (MJD 53498) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden Atsuko Nitta This is the last night we will be on nights together. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Reasonable spectro night. o 5 plates done. o Two (Az and then in Alt) slip when we instChanged after finishing the first plate. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Delayed opening due to clouds. 04:00Z The sky looks good enough to open. We put cart 3 after opening. The 180l sp dewar had low pressure and it took a long time to fill. Steph noticed the pressure was low and we opened the pressure building valve to bump up the pressure. Cart 3 Plate 2089 ------------------ guide stars on gotoField. Seeing is reasonably good, 1.2", but with patchy clouds coming and going, we start with a 1500s exposure. It looks like the clouds are not as thick as they look on the cloud camera. We cut the exposure time for the 2nd science frame (1200s). Whopping fiber on r1 seems to be affecting the s/n calculation on SoS. Compared to the other chips, r1 is getting much lower S/N. And yes, we are getting whopping fiber warning from SoS. sdR-r1-00032592.fit: WARNING: Whopping fiber # 104 (may have adverse affect on S/N) sdR-r1-00032592.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 313.508 at 8437.17 Ang (ignoring 5577) Just as we started the second exposure, we remembered that this plate had previous exposures. So we are done! We endStare the second exposure and go to the next cart. During the instChange, the telescoped slipped in AZ (both 1 and 2). ALT and ROT reached their instChange positions, but we had to reset the slip board before reslewing to the instChange position. After instChange, the telescope did not slew because the ALT slipped. Why and when did it slip? When I put the pin in? AZ seems to have slipped due to: azimuth (Windscreen touched in azimuth: CW (2005-05-08 06:12:47Z sdssmcp): 2005-05-08 06:12:58Z ) Cart 5 Plate 1771 Pri 4 plate ------------------------------ Gstars on gotoField. After finishing this plate with 3 exposures, we move on to: Cart 9 Plate 1646 ------------------- Gstars at the edge of fibers on gotoField. The guider could not pull them in so we used manual offset to center it better before using the guider to pull them in. The preCalib shows more yellow than the previous plate. The temperature has not changed much at all. 08:25Z The cloud camera has been showing a bit of cloud in the east for a while. The weather map looks like we might get another small clouds sweeping us soon. So we decide that we will stick to spectro for the rest of the night. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. Cart 7 Plate 1654 ------------------- Gstars on gotoField. Edward Wassell (on 3.5m) offered us home baked cookies sent from his son. Thank you. We got the following warning from SoS. dR-r1-00032607.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 109.324 at 8883.32 Ang (ignoring 5577) We finished this plate with 3 exposures. There were two carts available for the rest of the night. We asked the Qball who thought 8 was the right choice. Cart 8 Plate 1730 ---------------------- Gstars on gotoField. The third exposure was taken in twilight. As we waited to see the S/N of the last exposure, we took postCalib. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. Steve called to remind us to shut the pressure building valve off of spectro dewar after we build enough pressure. Thanks. I did not completely turn off the valve which resulted in loosing some LN2. Sorry. 11:20Z After we replaced the imager dewar and changing cartridge, we closed the telescope. endNight rejoiced and so did we. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5306 23:27Z 23:44Z 100 O -73.06 -68.84 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 22:32 32582 0.0 bias 23:28 32583 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32585, plate 2011 ----- 23:36 32584 10.0 flat Collimation 23:39 32585 2.0 arc " 23:45 32586 2.1 arc " 23:48 32587 2.1 arc " 02:48 32588 10.0 flat " 02:51 32589 2.0 arc " ----- sequence 32590, plate 2089 ------- Done combined with previous expos. 05:22 32590 10.0 flat 05:24 32591 2.0 arc 05:54 32592 1500.2 target 06:11 32593 855.8 target ----- sequence 32594, plate 1771 ------- Done 06:33 32594 10.0 flat 06:36 32595 2.0 arc 07:02 32596 1200.1 target 07:19 32597 900.1 target 07:37 32598 900.1 target ----- sequence 32599, plate 1646 ------- Done 07:53 32599 10.0 flat 07:55 32600 2.0 arc 08:15 32601 900.1 target 08:33 32602 900.1 target 08:46 32603 600.2 target ----- sequence 32604, plate 1654 ------- Done 08:57 32604 10.0 flat 09:00 32605 2.0 arc 09:19 32606 900.1 target 09:36 32607 900.1 target 09:49 32608 600.2 target ----- sequence 32609, plate 1730 ------- Done 10:01 32609 10.0 flat 10:04 32610 2.0 arc 10:23 32611 900.1 target 10:41 32612 900.2 target 11:04 32613 1200.1 target 11:07 32614 10.0 flat 11:10 32615 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:28Z 3 2089 259.88 0.0025 72.88 0.0014 91.16 0.0231 1.000140 07:07Z 5 1771 -66.13 0.0006 55.51 -0.0016 127.23 -0.0231 0.999990 08:03Z 9 1646 260.11 0.0008 73.18 0.0008 91.14 0.0134 1.000230 09:04Z 7 1654 284.84 0.0000 72.81 -0.0005 114.08 -0.0034 1.000080 10:10Z imager -55.46 -0.0008 52.65 0.0004 135.47 -0.0137 1.000130 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8492 Stays: JL8493 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:28Z 3 2089 1.00014 -1383 32 50 260 72.9 5.5 16 302 gdr 1.2 07:07Z 5 1771 0.99999 99 1346 100 -66 55.5 4.9 18 284 gdr 1.5 08:03Z 9 1646 1.00023 -2270 -704 50 260 73.2 4.9 19 296 gdr 1.5 09:04Z 7 1654 1.00008 -790 523 50 285 72.8 4.4 9 268 gdr 1.0 10:11Z 8 1730 1.00013 -1284 136 25 -56 52.4 4.0 18 295 gdr 1.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:40Z 43 21 16 255 (WSW) 1564 - 00:11Z 43 19 16 249 (WSW) 1579 - 00:43Z 43 18 18 256 (WSW) 1679 - 01:16Z 42 18 20 247 (WSW) 1703 - 01:46Z 42 18 19 246 (WSW) 1738 - 02:16Z 42 13 26 243 (WSW) 1669 - 02:46Z 41 12 18 249 (WSW) 1358 - 03:16Z 41 12 18 267 (W) 1379 - 03:47Z 41 12 15 259 (W) 1311 - 04:19Z 41 12 17 265 (W) 1247 - 04:49Z 42 13 18 276 (W) 1261 - 05:19Z 41 15 20 269 (W) 1178 - 05:49Z 41 16 18 284 (WNW) 1124 - 06:20Z 41 16 16 280 (W) 1128 - 06:53Z 40 17 15 269 (W) 1084 - 07:24Z 41 16 20 293 (WNW) 1045 - 07:56Z 41 15 19 301 (WNW) 1080 - 08:26Z 40 15 15 263 (W) 1045 - 08:57Z 39 13 16 290 (WNW) 922 - 09:29Z 39 13 20 296 (WNW) 979 - 10:02Z 39 13 23 291 (WNW) 904 - 10:33Z 39 13 21 298 (WNW) 880 - 11:06Z 38 13 16 294 (WNW) 905 - 11:38Z 38 14 21 294 (WNW) 885 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00Z Fans on.
