APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday July 5, 2005 (MJD 53557) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Another stormy night in the area followed by poor seeing and low spectro efficiency. We finished but two plates (2171, 1917) and put some signal on a third (2207). The exposures on 2207 are suspect and should be checked (see Log). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No issues during checkout. Spectro focus looks good so we made no changes. Night ----- Storms were in the area around sunset and into twilight. We saw clouds to the west with visible virga, and radar indicated returns in several directions within about 100 miles of APO. Under the circumstances we decided to ventilate but to not pull the building until the weather picture became clearer. During the switch the Cart 2 in the building, the telescope was unresponsive to track/mount commands. Howard keenly suggested an MCP reboot was in order. That fixed the problem. The storms persisted on radar for another hour past the end of twilight. We felt comfortable opening as they dissipated toward 05:00Z. Opened at 04:55Z. 05:14Z Cart 4 Plate 2171 (tile 1555, chunk112). We got an error too large to correct on the rotator on acquiring this field, so we forced a fiducial and tried again. No GSOGTF. fk5InFiber number 10 found it. We lost some time on the setup for this plate because two iterations of the guider focus loop were required; the first quit without completing. Efficiency was not very good at all during this plate on account of wildly varying (and usually bad) seeing, so we progressively lengthened successive exposures in order to finish. In the end, we finished with three exposures totalling 4200 s. Although SoS didn't ask for a postCalib on this plate, we did one anyway. SoS complained about a whopping fiber #12 on r1 exposure 33270. 07:12Z Cart 3 Plate 2207 (tile 1592, chunk116). GSOGTF. Given the expiration time of this plate we knew we would only get one exposure in before having to quit and go on. One 1200 s exposure here and on to... 07:50Z Cart 9 Plate 1917 (seguefaint98). We begin with (S/N)^2 of 35.9 on this plate but the final exposure (33232) we obtained on it on MJD 53555 ran later than the plate expiration time, so we plan to put at least (S/N)^2 = 22 on this plate to call it done. GSOGTF but either the seeing or focus looks horrible; we decided a proper focus sweep here was in order. That improved efficiency, but seeing degraded soon thereafter. We obtained three exposures of 1500, 1200 and 1020 s, respectively, bringing us to the desired (S/N)^2 threshold, then took the SoS-recommended postCalib. 09:26Z Cart 1 Plate 2251 (segue121). No GSOGTF, but found on fk5InFiber number 10. SoS reported a whopping fiber #579 in r2 on the first science exposure (33285). We thought we were on the way to finishing this plate before the end of the night based on the signal gathered in that first science exposure, but then the second science (33286) was a surprise: the signal in b1 dropped (3.1 vs 5.5) while the signal in b2 increased (8.6 vs 7.4). Throughout the second exposure, seeing and efficiency were similar to conditions in the first exposure. We also noted various SoS warnings about a gaggle of whopping fibers (nos. 31, 173, 460, 473, 579 and 611), all kinds of bad sky residuals, scattered light max exceeded, etc. In QA examination of sky levels from the first science exposure, the noise in the sky signal seemed greater than usual. The complaints about the sky level in SoS on 33286 could not have been due to twilight, which had just started as the exposure ended. We think something is up but can't figure what. More whopping fibers and bad sky residuals on 33287, and we still didn't make the goal on this third science exposure even by extending it to 1200 s. Closed up for the night at 10:50Z. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5433 23:32Z 23:49Z 100 O -13.83 -9.54 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33262, plate -9999 ------- 23:26 33262 0.0 bias 23:33 33263 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33264, plate 2248 ------- 00:05 33264 10.0 flat 00:08 33265 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33266, plate 2171 ------- 19.6 15.3 21.1 19.1 DONE 05:36 33266 10.0 flat 05:39 33267 2.0 arc 05:58 33268 900.1 target 06:26 33269 1500.1 target 06:59 33270 1800.2 target 07:02 33271 10.0 flat 07:04 33272 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33273, plate 2207 ------- 4.5 4.4 5.1 4.7 07:17 33273 10.0 flat 07:19 33274 2.0 arc 07:44 33275 1200.1 target ----- sequence 33276, plate 1917 ------- 26.3 22.9 25.7 24.4 DONE 08:00 33276 10.0 flat 08:02 33277 2.0 arc 08:32 33278 1500.1 target 08:55 33279 1200.1 target 09:15 33280 1020.1 target 09:17 33281 10.0 flat 09:20 33282 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33283, plate 2251 ------- 11.6 22.3 27.1 53.4 09:36 33283 10.0 flat 09:38 33284 2.0 arc 09:56 33285 900.1 target 10:15 33286 900.1 target 10:38 33287 1200.1 target 10:41 33288 10.0 flat 10:43 33289 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:44Z 4 2171 -71.68 0.0062 64.69 0.0053 120.38 0.0034 1.000130 07:24Z 3 2207 282.56 0.0042 49.75 0.0061 120.69 0.0000 1.000250 08:11Z 9 1917 15.79 0.0016 50.07 0.0066 193.18 0.0082 1.000390 09:43Z 1 2251 34.62 0.0072 76.59 0.0072 210.77 0.0287 1.000150 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8738 Stays: JL8739 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:44Z 4 2171 1.00013 -1284 29 -50 -72 64.6 16.4 24 147 -- 1.6 07:24Z 3 2207 1.00025 -2468 -912 -50 283 49.7 15.9 17 152 -- 2.1 08:12Z 9 1917 1.00039 -3850 -2137 -130 16 50.1 17.1 19 168 -- 1.6 09:43Z 1 2251 1.00015 -1480 -234 -130 34 76.7 17.3 9 189 -- 2.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:17Z 80 31 10 179 (S) 706 - PtlyCldy 23:49Z 77 34 14 206 (SSW) 796 - PtlyCldy 00:21Z 76 38 17 198 (SSW) 1005 - PtlyCldy 00:53Z 72 38 16 185 (S) 1043 - PtlyCldy 01:26Z 71 38 11 180 (S) 996 - PtlyCldy 01:58Z 68 38 15 192 (SSW) 1038 - MstlyClr 02:30Z 66 38 17 156 (SSE) 1033 - MstlyClr 03:02Z 66 38 23 154 (SSE) 1015 - Clear 03:35Z 64 39 15 165 (SSE) 1162 - Clear 04:07Z 63 42 22 151 (SSE) 1018 - Clear 04:39Z 62 41 18 152 (SSE) 854 - Clear 05:09Z 62 40 20 147 (SSE) 731 - Clear 05:40Z 61 40 25 143 (SE) 706 - Clear 06:12Z 61 40 26 145 (SE) 629 - Clear 06:45Z 60 40 24 141 (SE) 672 - Clear 07:17Z 60 41 16 152 (SSE) 768 - Clear 07:48Z 60 41 15 163 (SSE) 735 - Clear 08:18Z 62 42 19 179 (S) 957 - Clear 08:49Z 62 41 18 166 (SSE) 1100 - Clear 09:19Z 62 40 11 183 (S) 938 - MstlyClr 09:51Z 63 39 11 181 (S) 887 - MstlyClr 10:24Z 62 39 15 175 (S) 867 - PtlyCldy 10:56Z 60 40 12 176 (S) 842 - MstlyClr ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:00Z Fans and blowers on, louvers open 02:30Z East and west garage doors open 04:55Z Enclosure off 10:50Z Enclosure on, fans off, louvers and doors closed Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 1 (Plate 2251) mounted Counterweights at 250 Spectro autofill reconnected No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 11:10Z Imager: 206lbs 21psi Spectro: 136lbs 21psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_149_0 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_02 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5500 0.5770 Axial B 0.5930 0.5880 Axial C 0.9840 0.9460 Trans D -8.1870 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0330 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5951 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
