APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday July 12, 2005 (MJD 53564) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden Bill Boroski Support French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A few spectro exposures on plate 2255 through clouds, but it's not done yet. A partial uLeak calib on u6, and some clouds, high wind and humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Partly cloudy at sunset. There is rain not too far away, so we will wait a bit to see if conditions improve or deteriorate. 03:00Z Conditions are improving. We decide to open. 03:19Z Cartridge 5, plate 2255 - SEGUE Special Bright plate ----------------------------------------------------------- FK5 at the edge of fiber 10. Disabled fibers 1, 4, 7 for first 14 minutes of the exposure. Exposure 33355: After pausing the exposure, there were 54 s remaining, so the total exposuere time was increased to 906s to give a 60s exposure on the offset bright stars. Exposure 33356: The total exposure was raised to 910s after pausing, to give a 60 s exposure on the offset bright stars. We had clouds during this exposure, and b1 (S/N)^2 was only 1.4. The other cameras were higher, and I suspect this exposure can be used even if we don't count it toward the total (S/N)^2. Exposure 33357: Increased the exposure time because of clouds. The total exposure time was 1508s, 100 s of which went to the offset bright stars. Even with the increased exposure time, we made just under 2.0 on the b1 (S/N)^2. As with the previous exposure, I think it is useful, even though we won't count it toward the total (S/N)^2. Post-cal taken. 05:15Z Radar return was getting too close for comfort, so we closed. While waiting to see what the clouds would do, the humidity started to climb. Later the winds went above closing conditions. Okay, we gave the weather a chance. It's time to move on to imager calibrations. u6 uLeak QE: ----------- Tonight, setup went much more smoothly. This afternoon I cleaned the serial and power contacts on the fiber transceiver and the serial conection at the MSP laptop. I had no MSP communication problems tonight. Coincidence? I moved idR-005356* and idR-5356* to 'commish:/data/photo/doi/12july05 in order to free up a little more space on sdsshost. I also compressed idR-005445* in /data/photo/doi/calibdata on 'host. More data will need to be transferred off of 'host tomorrow. The IOP session froze. A ptvmeReset did not work and I had to reboot the crates. It was too late to switch back to spectroscopy at this point, although weather would have permitted it. Instead, I logged out MSP and im ports and made sure we could image in drifting mode properly, then checked communications with the MSP. They were okay. It looks like it was a VME/IOP problem that stopped the imager cals tonight. I created a temp.list file in my usrdevel/msp directory that can be used to resume the calibration. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5449 10:24Z 10:34Z 100 O 156.76 159.11 30 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n): partial - brightest/faintest objects UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33351, plate 2259 ------- 01:44 33351 10.0 flat 01:47 33352 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33353, plate 2255 ------- 03:21 33353 10.0 flat 03:23 33354 2.0 arc 03:52 33355 906.1 target 04:20 33356 910.2 target 05:00 33357 1508.1 target 05:04 33358 10.0 flat 05:06 33359 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8762 Stays: JL8763 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 01:38Z 63 45 8 91 (E) 945 - 02:10Z 61 46 19 76 (ENE) 916 - 02:42Z 60 46 15 80 (E) 935 - 03:14Z 59 46 20 75 (ENE) 885 - 03:46Z 59 46 20 77 (ENE) 893 - 04:17Z 58 46 18 71 (ENE) 845 - 04:47Z 58 46 20 73 (ENE) 822 - 05:19Z 57 47 19 66 (ENE) 850 - 05:51Z 57 48 18 70 (ENE) 906 - 06:23Z 55 48 15 61 (ENE) 873 - 06:55Z 54 48 13 75 (ENE) 885 - 07:28Z 54 48 26 73 (ENE) 747 - 08:00Z 55 48 25 70 (ENE) 804 - 08:32Z 56 46 24 63 (ENE) 871 - 09:04Z 56 44 21 62 (ENE) 662 - 09:37Z 56 42 9 77 (ENE) 549 - 10:09Z 58 39 16 70 (ENE) 474 - 10:41Z 57 38 0 271 (W) 435 - 11:11Z 56 40 8 37 (NE) 510 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:10Z Opened doors, started ventilation. 02:45Z Building opened 05:15Z Building closed.
