APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday November 19, 2005 (MJD 53694) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (swing) Jurek Krzesinski Viktor Malanushenko Elena Malanushenko Gajus Miknaitis (supernova guy - FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 82 S done from lambda 113 -> -141.2 including the ramps. Then we did pointing corrections without stopping the run and lost controll over the pointing (skippy problem), so we are not sure if we actualy were pointing correctly and if the remaining data till lambda -122 is good (how the reduction pipe line is dealing with that)? Shell we stop the run while correcting the pointing during SN scan or is it better just to continue and apply corrections on fly? Problems: --------- Seeing v53694_3" sucks!!! -> see the log :) skippy not running or working only on a single frame after a pointing corrections were applied (see the log and the problem section). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems to report. Spectro collimation adjusted. Details in the Problems section. Trained Viktor on afternoon checkout procedures. Night: ------ Supernova night. Imager mounted before sunset. Run 5880: On-telescope bias in a darkened enclosure. Everything looks good. Run 5881: ignore (the instrument was not set to imager). Run 5882. Stripe 82 S. 01:41Z Frame 19, lambda 113 start of the ramp. Seeing is bad, yet we still are not in focus. Then in focus and at the start of the science on frame 32, lambda 115. Seeing is bad all the time ~3", but at the end of the run (frame 630) it got down to 2" (and below) reaching survey quality at frame 680. At the same time skippy reported nu error 19.9 and rising rapidly! After a short disscusion we decided to correct the telescope pointing on fly. First correction did not change much (well, we neglected elErr of 0.0008 deg): offset calib 0.012, 0 (lambda -141.2 frames 724 & 725) skippy run on frames 724 and 728 showed no significant change in nuErr but the number of stars found by skippy went down to 7 and 4 respectively. Then we made the next correction: offset calib 0.012, -0.0008 (lambda -138.3 frames 744 & 745) skippy could now run only from astrom and on a single frame (no avaraging). When we tried to get it run on more than one frame it gave us an error we've seen before (see the problem section). When run on a single frame it was finding only 1-3 stars. Bummer - I (Jurek) doubled the azErr correction! Realizing that we went back with azErr: offset calib -0.012, 0 (lambda -135.5 frames 763 & 764) Well skippy still cannot find more than 3 stars and still works on a single frame (if at all) and after frame 799 it does not work on any of frames (the same error as shown in a problem section). Somehow by correcting the telescope pointing I confused skippy. It's too late to redo the bad pointing part of the stripe (~25 minutes left till we'll reach RA 60 deg and we are already at alt 39.7 deg). I don't know how the SN reduction software'll handle jumps in pointing well, we'll find out soon :>. Sorry. Maybe the pointing wasn't bad after the last correction? Anyway the seeing got worse again and it's variable (2-3"). 09:58Z endDrift of 5882 run, stripe 82 S. Frame 852, lambda -122. skippy: ------- After checking skippy results in the log, we found that skippy started to work again on frames above 815, but found too few stars to trust it's results. 10:50Z The moon is up and bright. We changed to spectroscopy (not that we think we'll get any good data with such bright sky, but to train Elena :). cart 6 plate 2285 mouted. fk5 star used. We had to apply the offset -15" in declination to center the star. 11:49Z NOPE the sky is too bright, 15 minutes exposure declared bad. 11:59Z Telescope closed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5879 22:24Z 22:43Z 100 O 104.34 108.91 45 ignore 5880 00:26Z 00:44Z 100 O 134.97 139.28 42 bias on-telescope 5882 01:34Z 10:00Z 82 S 111.31 -121.87 860 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5882 23 4 8 -11.000 1.008 1.900 2.085 0.01921 238 40 5882 30 4 21 4.100 0.141 0.800 0.136 -0.01314 238 40 5882 83 4 20 6.900 0.191 1.200 0.179 -0.01441 238 40 5882 135 4 100 6.300 0.216 1.300 0.189 -0.01361 238 40 5882 187 4 66 7.000 0.209 0.700 0.173 -0.01361 238 40 5882 239 4 49 7.600 0.185 0.200 0.164 -0.01349 238 40 5882 288 4 52 8.000 0.180 -0.300 0.211 -0.01311 238 40 5882 343 4 52 8.400 0.209 -0.900 0.200 -0.01249 238 40 5882 395 4 33 8.600 0.199 -1.400 0.131 -0.01226 238 40 5882 447 4 48 9.000 0.152 -2.300 0.194 -0.01308 238 40 5882 500 4 36 8.700 0.180 -2.800 0.147 -0.01231 238 40 5882 570 4 48 3.100 0.232 3.200 0.239 -0.01639 238 40 5882 624 4 31 -5.100 0.159 11.200 0.189 -0.01864 238 40 5882 676 4 57 -14.300 0.140 19.900 0.213 -0.02023 238 40 here the pointing is going very bad: 5882 700 4 72 -19.300 0.170 23.900 0.277 -0.02197 238 40 5882 711 4 65 -21.300 0.147 26.100 0.231 -0.02301 238 40 5882 713 4 56 -21.700 0.149 26.400 0.247 -0.02292 238 40 5882 722 4 44 -23.300 0.209 28.500 0.240 -0.02459 238 40 5882 724 4 7 -24.200 0.078 27.200 0.110 -0.00992 238 40 5882 728 4 4 -25.100 0.082 28.700 0.239 -0.01391 238 40 Oh!?
