APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday February 17, 2006 (MJD 53784) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Mike Harvanek, Elena Malanushenko, Viktor Malanushenko support: Jon Brinkmann, Steve Kent (by phone), Eric Neilsen (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown and science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Some problems on afternoon checkout - see the log. Threatening clouds, dust, humidity, wind, rain and snow kept us closed. PR 6868 (goDrift calling wrong eqToStripe) successfully tested and closed. goDrift appears to work normally again. The discrepancy in the primary lateral mig values E and F was corrected by homing and relaxing the primary again. Weather prevented imager on the sky testing and further normal operations testing of iop and the DA. Thus, iop is still declared test and the status of the 4 relevant DA PRs is still pending. These tasks and the shake summary will be taken care of tomorrow, weather permitting. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Today again the same problem as yesterday, a file owned by cloomis: -rw-r--r-- 1 cloomis dss 566 Feb 17 10:15 focus-53784.par causing permission problem for endDrift. Permission was changed. goDrift was run again and then... While trying to endDrift I've got an error (see the problem section). But I was able to endDrift the scan from another iop window. FF lamps: and we still have a bad flat field lamp. This time I located it as the one above counterweight 1 (bottom east, when the telescope is in the stow position). Norm Blythe replaced the lamp for us, then he found out that was a bad connector (thanks Norm). MCP was showing in read REBOOTED (Craig was working on it) - I pressed that REBOOT sign, then have stolen semaphors, give them away, stolen, give them away, then wanted to type axis init in the telrun window, when axies initialized spontaneously on their own. It has happened about 22:48Z. 23:40 Watcher (VME) warned me about ad2 - no response (I wasn't working with imager at this time). Crate 3 was reboot, another goDrift -bias was taken. E,F primary mirror axis positions not updated yet (there was no imager tests on the sky yet) --> homing and relaxing the primary fixed the problem; see below. Spectrograph appeared to be in focus, no adjustment made. Night: ------ Threatening clouds, dust, humidity, wind, rain and snow kept us closed. Jon Brinkmann helped both Elena and I with some ssh problems that we've been having from our accounts (thanks Jon!). Jon knows the details of the problems if anyone is interested. Eric Neilsen called while we were waiting for conditions to improve. We discussed PR 6868 (goDrift calling wrong eqToStripe) and decided that it was possible to test this PR without being on the sky. With 3 stop buttons in and the imager in the doghouse we issued a scanStripe followed by a goDrift and tricked the system into thinking we were scanning on the sky. (No, the flat field screens did not try to open with the telescope in the enclosure.) goDrift appeared to work normally. We changed the flavor of the scan from science to ignore and the stripe, strip from 1260,S to 100,O when the endDrift command was issued. Note that we got the same "Error stopping focus loop" problem that Jurek saw earlier today: im> endDrift 2006-02-18 04:49:04Z: Error stopping focus loop: couldn't open "/astrolog/53784/focus-53784.par": Permission denied PR 6868 was closed. When talking to the engineering crew yesterday morning, Wendell Jordan informed me that the primary lateral migs E and F were not battery powered and so the battery change could not be the reason for these discrepant values. So, we decided to home and relax the primary again and this fixed the problem. endNight is completed. 11:50 Z Telescope is checked for day time, stowed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6023 22:03Z 22:21Z 100 O -172.21 -167.85 42 ignore 6024 22:30Z 22:36Z 100 O -165.56 -163.98 22 ignore 6025 00:14Z 00:19Z 100 O -139.51 -138.07 24 ignore 6026 04:37Z 04:50Z 1260 S -93.21 -70.28 34 ignore testing PR 6868 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): NO UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 37482, plate -9999 ------- 22:02 37482 0.0 bias ----- sequence 37483, plate 1246 ------- 23:35 37483 10.0 flat 23:37 37484 2.0 arc 23:51 37485 2.1 arc 23:54 37486 2.1 arc ----- sequence 37487, plate 1246 ------- 00:40 37487 0.0 bias 01:14 37488 0.0 bias 03:24 37489 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:07Z 32 20 22 260 (W) -9999 - 22:38Z 31 20 13 269 (W) 2017 - 23:08Z 30 20 19 273 (W) 2355 - 23:39Z 29 19 17 289 (WNW) 2717 - 00:09Z 29 21 17 273 (W) 2382 - totally overcast 00:41Z 29 22 16 297 (WNW) 2075 - 01:45Z 30 24 19 264 (W) 2852 - 02:18Z 31 24 17 232 (SW) 2288 - 02:34Z 31 24 15 221 (SW) 2465 - 02:50Z 31 24 19 235 (SW) 2405 - 03:22Z 32 24 39 235 (SW) 2077 - 03:53Z 32 24 17 248 (WSW) 1975 - 04:25Z 33 25 10 292 (WNW) 1352 - 04:58Z 31 25 20 239 (WSW) 1795 - 05:30Z 29 28 29 240 (WSW) 2625 - 06:02Z 30 29 16 261 (W) 1284 - 06:34Z 31 29 17 262 (W) 1127 - 07:06Z 31 29 16 263 (W) 1214 - 07:39Z 31 28 16 257 (WSW) 1315 - 08:11Z 31 28 13 248 (WSW) 1207 - 08:43Z 32 28 22 218 (SW) 973 - 09:15Z 31 28 17 255 (WSW) 1245 - 09:47Z 31 28 20 250 (WSW) 919 - 10:20Z 31 28 23 240 (WSW) 1403 - 10:52Z 32 27 23 246 (WSW) 829 - 11:24Z 32 27 18 237 (WSW) 760 - 11:56Z 33 27 18 250 (WSW) 636 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- We did not open because the weather condition was bad.
