APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday May 22, 2006 (MJD 53878) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Viktor Malanushenko Mike Harvanek (swing) Visitor: Gerard Kosicki ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Strong dust at the evening, opened at 05:00Z. Bad seeing all the night: more than 1.8 arcsec. The accumulated dusts level during observations was less than 12000. We observed five plates; declared as done two of them and for two another got significant signal. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectrograph collimation was checked but not adjusted. It is currently set for approximately 15 degrees C. No problems to report. Night: ----- High wind and dust at sunset prevented us from opening. We considered it, while dust was around 5000 counts but quickly retreated after a spike crested around 17000 counts. By 05:00Z we were satisfied that the dust had dropped to a manageable level and would stay there for some length of time (it was below 3000 counts for the remainder of the night). However, winds persisted and brought with them generally very poor and highly variable seeing, all the way from slightly over an arcsecond to beyond 4 arcsec, both on DIMM and the 2.5m. Judging exposure times was frustrated by the conditions, leading to several not-quite-finished plates tonight. We checking spectra of spectropoto standart and hot standart stars: all of them has good conditions. We both failed to note the proper expiration time for this plate and were off by an hour. Luckily we caught the mistake shortly after beginning the second exposure here and switched plates as quickly as we could. We declared the one exposure we did on this plate bad in SoS as it did not meet the requirements to be considered good.
