APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 8, 2006 (MJD 54078) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (dayShift) Steph Snedden (Observer) Kaike Pan (Observer) Jon BrinkMann (Support) Visitors: Jim Gunn Shi HuoMing (stayed with us all night) Chen JianJun (all night) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake Down ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloud camera update posted in the afternoon checkout. Due to high humidity all night, we never open tonight. We did spectrograph bias, dark, and Jim's spectrograph humidity tests. We have some questions on the tests (see log). we left cart in the 2.5m enclosure. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- The afternoon checkout went well except I (with Jon B's help) had to do a fwbRebootAck in the mop session since the filterWheelBox had been previously rebooted. As yet another test for the cloud camera, I installed Kurt's camera with the control box of our old camera. Thanks to Wendell, all the cameras and control boxes are now interchangeable. After doing an alignment, I checked for the noise-bar artifacts. I did not see any noise. I would like to leave Kurt's camera running as a test for the next couple of days. Please report any problems and the time the problems occur. Thanks. Shake Tasks Completed: Created and installed new fiducial tables (alt, az, and rot). The new version number is v1_57. Did home/relax procedures for M1 and M2. And, did an im>saveNominalMigValuesForLog command to save new mirror numbers. With Steve and Wendell's help, the engCam was mounted and tested. I checked to make sure it would take an image. Did an imager/DA aliveness check. Did a bias with the spectros; The IDL 5.5a> apo_plotbias, 41663 results are in the Problem Section. The spectro focus/collimation was not checked because engCam was mounted. Checked that PT FFlamp had been replaced. Got the following results with the uptime command on sdsshost2. [hjbrew@sdsshost2 hjbrew]$ uptime 16:25:05 up 29 days, 1:25, 70 users, load average: 1.16, 0.70, 0.67 [hjbrew@sdsshost2 hjbrew]$ Night: ----------- 01:30Z because the humidity kept high, we decided to dismount the engineering camera, mount a cartridge (#6) to do the spectrograph humidity tests and spectrograph biases and darkes. We ran a test for Jim Gunn trying to see if humidity has an effect on the spectrograph dichroics. The humidity results were not what we expected. We expected the humidity to climb rapidly when the spectrograph doors were opened and the cartridge mounted, then decrease fairly rapidly as the purge dried the air out with the cartridge in place. The idea was to keep taking spectro flats long after the humidity sensors were back to the original levels to see if the dichroics respond to the change in humidity with a time lag. However, the humidity as indicated by the sensors only rose a little, and after an hour had not gone back down to the original levels. We took flats for an hour, but I'm not sure how useful the data will be. Did the dry air purge prevent the humidity from climbing too high inside the spectrographs? If so, that's a good thing. Are the sensors not calibrated? That's a bad thing. Perhaps we should answer these questions before we do the test again.
