APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday April 3, 2008 (MJD 54560) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons (observer) Dan Oravetz (observer) Dmitry Bizyaev (dayshift) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We lost the first half of the night to uncooperative weather. Imager Calibrations (MSP) ------------------------- We finished the `r 2' QE measurments that we started last night. We ran into the same problem we had last night when attempting the MSP bias. We remedied the problem the same way we did last night by opening a scrolling display menu, selecting `All Chips' from the display and proceeding to take another MSP bias. Spectroscopy ------------ Finished: cartridge 2, 2953 cartirdge 9, 1830 Obtained good signal on: cartridge 4, 2462 cartridge 1, 1833 Miscellaneous ------------- The first few hours of the night we had problems consistently accessing the weather status page, the cloud cam page, and SoS. This was especially inconvenient since we were closely monitoring wind gust speeds and dust counts as we were debating whether or not to open. The PT also had problems around this time (see PT log). We checked with the 3.5m observer to see if this was perhaps a site-wide problem and he confirmed that he was under similar circumstances; he could not talk to his instruments for intermittent brief periods of time. Throughout the night the cloud cam went offline approximately every 10-15 minutes until 07:30Z. Clicking `stop' in the IRSC Control Panel, waiting a few minutes, and then clicking `run' brought it back, but only temporarily. After 07:30Z it performed normally. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- ntp_check ok iccSoundOff ok imager bias ok spectro bias ok IDL 5.5a> apo_plotbias, 51555 Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00051555.fit -6.1 -3.9 -2.8 2.3 7.6 9.3 10.7 sdR-b2-00051555.fit -8.1 -5.8 -4.3 1.5 7.1 8.9 11.4 sdR-r1-00051555.fit -7.2 -5.4 -3.9 1.6 7.6 9.6 11.6 sdR-r2-00051555.fit -7.4 -5.7 -4.2 1.7 7.3 9.4 11.5 Collimation should be good for +7C (with cartridge 5). We didn't start ventilation in the evening because of high dust count (~3000 counts) and high wind gusts. Night: ----- 01:25Z - The wind gust speeds had dropped below 35 mph, but were still hovering between 30 and 35 mph. We had clear skies overhead and the 1.0 um dust count dropped to ~2100 counts. We decided to ventilate and keep an eye on the wind speeds. 01:30Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans and blowers on. 02:10Z - The wind gusts were back over 35 mph so we delayed opening and decided to wait and see what the weather would do. 02:20Z - Clouds moved in from the north. 03:08Z - 1.0 um dust count spiked to 9400 counts. Soon after the dust count was as high as 13100 counts. We stopped ventilating. 03:10Z - Stopped ventilation. Doors and louvers closed, fans and blowers off. 03:25Z - The humidity had risen to 41% and the dust was still high. We still had clouds as well. We decided to try and finish the `r 2' QE that was started last night. `r 2' QE ******** 03:49Z - MSP bias (attempt 1): Run 7416, frame 1. We ran into the same problem that we had last night for the MSP bias where the bias frame would begin to read out and then freeze about 1/5th of the way down the screen. 03:52Z - MSP bias (attempt 2): Run 7417, frame 1. We experienced the same problem as above. Last night, opening a scrolling display menu and selecting `All Chips' remedied the problem we had with the MSP bias. We opened a scrolling display menu, selected `All Chips' and tried again. 03:54Z - MSP bias (attempt 3): Run 7418, frame 1. This bias behaved as expected. The `qe_r.list' was copied to `qe_r2.list' and `qe_r2.list' was edited such that all of the records were deleted up to that where we left off last night. So, the first line of the `qe_r2.list' read `567 5' since this is where we left off. 04:01Z - Started QE measurements. Run 7418, frames 2 - 29. 05:23Z - The 1.0 um dust count dropped to ~1500 counts and the wind speeds were down. The only thing that prevented us from opening was the clouds. We decided to start ventilating since the satellite showed a disintegrating trend for the clouds to the north and northwest, so that we could be prepared when the skies cleared. 05:24Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans and blowers on. While we waited for conditions to improve, and since there was no moon, we decided to continue with imager calibrations. `i 2' QE ******** 05:30Z - MSP bias (attempt 1): run 7419, frame 1. This bias worked, but after we took this bias, none of the commands with the `-echo' flag returned anything but a blank space. We went down to the laptop and restarted the `calib' program and then we had responses from the MSP commands with the `-echo' flag. For example, `mspSend -echo ping' actually returned `ping' instead of empty space. We decided to take another bias. 05:47Z - MSP bias (attempt 2): run 7420, frame 1. This bias worked, but then the clouds started to clear, so we quit imager calibrations and opened. WE DID NOT COMPLETE ANYTHING FOR `i 2' QE. 06:00Z - Enclosure off. The pressure is high enough, so I tightened the valve. Neon lamps in the evening... you probably already know the rest. Upon evening check out, 3 Neon lamps were on only (as usual, the System Status showed all 4 are on). I tried to wait longer time (more than 2 min), to reboot the power supply box downstairs. It didn't help to make the fourth lamp (top left as usual) work. One more test was performed. I turned lamps, wait 10-20 sec., then turned them off. Once lamps got off, I turned them on immediately. From 4th attempt the fourth lamp got on. After that switching on and off on a regular manner, with reasonable delays, brought all 4 Ne lamps on.
