APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 4, 2010 (MJD 55291) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Dmitry Bizyaev Kaike Pan - on site Dan Long - on site Jim Gunn - on phone Craig Loomis - on phone and on-line Steph Snedden - on phone and on-line ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS, then Marvels Science ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- BOSS R2 camera yields bad images. Dan Long swapped sp2 saddlebag, it didn't help. Since swapping cables is a big risk, and small probability to solve the problem, we switched to Marvels program earlier. So, BOSS is out of order now. Exposed Marvels plates: 7311 B (c. 5) extra one to the schedule 3413 B (c. 8) broken fibers: 3,4 and 43,44 3796 B (c. 9) 3899 A (c. 6) -**- B We were opened for 6 hours under ~ 2.5K dust particle counts, so please check the mirrors for dust. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Yesterday's problem with r2 BOSS camera continues. R2 biases look terrible. All suggestions to electronics problems. Kaike got on site in the afternoon time, tried to check cable connetions, all tight. Know about the problem: David S., Steph, Craig. Cannot be reached: Dan Long, Connie, Wendell, Jim Gunn. Night: ------ 00:55Z Dan Long is heading up to the site. 01:40Z started ventilation, cracked doors. Then doors closed: need light to work on sp2. 02:30Z Marvels Th-Ar lamp is no now. Firstly, Dan suspected the power supply box, that has 3 LEDs. one of them - green, didnt come on. Jim saod this is normal, and that LED is just broken, the power box works normally when it is off, but other two LEDs are on. It was decided to swap saddle bad for r2 camera. 03:50Z swapping saddle bags is finished. Weird thing after the swap: if the power box reset is done, all lights are ok = green in r2 power supply box. If "daq reset" button is then pushed, they all turned red. We did it first time, didn't noticed they turned red, and watched a lot of fake red camera temperature readings (like +1 C). Did the power cycling one more time and didn't touch DAQ reset button. We got normal temperature, reloaded boss controllers and did boss iack, then took bias. R2 bias looks the same as before, BAD. Dan is discussing situation with Jim. Dan: Cable swap gives low probability to fix, high risk, and Jmm recommended not to do it, and rather contact Connie to check voltages. Meanwhile, Steph is finishing the spectrographs WAVEMID checking. We put Marvels cartridge 5 into the bay from inside the plug lab, since we can observe it before the actual Marels time starts. Thanks to Dan for wookie demonstration. gcamera was found to be at -10C after all our reboots, not at -40 C. gcameraICC restarted and T adjusted to -40 C. 05:30Z enclosure off, cart. 5 plate 3711 is mounted.
