APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 20, 2004 (MJD 53360) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Pete Newman Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake under the moon and science in the dark. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o imager monthly checkout (biasCheck, checkBias, imagerFlat) completed and all is well. o PR6227 closed. We can now safely run skippyu even if we did goStare with imager the first thing in the night. o sdssProcedure changes checked and verified. o No SEGUE plate got useful data due to moon. o Plate 2084 (survey) done o One rotator abort during spectro observation. o Good data on 21S, -24 --> 17. Finished this stripe. o ending this dark run with beautiful photometric imaging data. :) o endNight is running as we go to bed. The frame tapes on the shelves, but the gang/spectro tapes are still in the drive. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems with afternoon checkout. Spectro crates were rebooted and sequence number fixed, to recover from last night's scrolling display freeze. Spectrograph focus not checked as imager was mounted, and since the imager was mounted, the test bias is a real bias. Night: ------ We start with imager flats since we are moony and shaking and the imager is on the telescope. 01:30Z After taking imager flat data, we opened with cartridge 2. It is so moony that I cannot tell I have my headlamp on when I walk to the telescope. Cart 2 Plate 2042 ======================= Used fk5 to find the stars. fk5 was on the edge of the fiber. Very moony, 1.5" and variable seeing. The first science exposure showed that the sky is too bright for science. Oh well. We took couple more exposures just in case somehow we get something useful. We refocused after the air temperature changed enough to affect the FWHM of guidestars. We recorded this time as 'other weather problem' since there is no 'moon' category in the problem. We then gave up and Pete tested PR6227. After testing the PR, we went back to the field of plate2042 to see if we can get any science exposure. BTW while we were testing we got AZ fiducial error, therefore we had to accept the correction before we could find our guide stars again. We also refocused. Nope. Moon wins. We give up getting data on this plate. Two other first half of the evning plates have larger moon number, so we wait until a survey plate is available. Shake Items ============= o DIMM was not powered up this dark run. So no powering down necessary. o sdssProcedures v1_97: The changes recorded in changelog was verified. All is up to date. o imager monthly checkout checkBias and biasCheck output =================================== It looks like all is well. Files are being copied to phoenix.apo.nmsu.edu o PR 6227 Jeff Munn has modified astrom to solve the problem of goStares writing the opConfig file before goDrift We needed to do a goDrift, so we did it with the imager in doghouse and stop button pushed in. Pete completed the test and now we can run skippy even when we did goStare before goDrift at the beginning of the night. The PR was closed and declared astrom v3_8c current. The detail of how the test was carried out as follows. With a stop button in, the imager in the doghouse and inst=imager set in TCC: sdsshost> setup iop sdsshost> unsetup astrom sdsshost> setup -t astrom sdsshost> iop ... im> which astrom /p/astrom/v3_8c/bin/astrom im> startDa -tcc First check calcStripeParams and scanStripe work. Eventually, scanStripe times out here because the stop button is in. Next run a drift with a normal opConfig file. We started tonight with normal imager goDrift commands, so the current file will do. im> goDrift Flavor of this run (science, bias, calibration, engineering, ignore, help) []: science Stripe, Strip (e.g, 22,N or SS,N) []: 79,N Please provide a one line comment [] Not real - testing in doghouse 2004-12-21 04:21:45Z: Beginning data taking ...etc... Cart 6 Plate 2084 ================== This plate has 0.4 Zapta. guideStars were found ra=-10", dec=9" from the gotoField position without offsets. Similar to what we were finding this dark run. We refocused also. (About)08:02Z Rotator aborted during 30045. The guide stars started to move out of the fibers. We stopped the exposure. We stopped the exposure before we were too far from where we should be, so we decided to keep the exposure. This happened at ROT= 238.47. We tried slewing few times in TCC, but every time, the rotator aborted. We took control with MCP, moved it a bit and all was well. We then did gotoField and resumed operation. We finished this plate with 4 exposures. 08:40Z instChange to imager. We don't have enough time to finish one plate before moonset, so we will get the imager on so that we can doing imaging right when the moonsets. If all goes well, we should be able to finish off the stripe we started last night. We declared the new astrom current after testing the PR, but when we started the new iop, it did not start the new astrom. Pete sent email to Scot about it. Meanwhile, we restarted the new astrom (v3_8c) manually. Run 5086 21S ============= Frame 18 Longitude -33.8 SoKent says we are in good seeing. skippy showed that all is in spec. No need to do offset! :) We just remembered that we forgot to copy the old opConfig file back to where it should be after testing the PR. We endDrifted, copied the file and restarted. We call this run bad. Run 5087 21S ============= seeing good from the beginning. Frame 16 skippy is good Frame 23 Longitude -29.3 in focus.
