APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 25, 2001 (MJD 52178) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Mike Harvanek (APO) Night: Dan Long (APO), Pete Newman (APO) Support: Eric Neilsen (FNAL, by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. Spectroscopy until moonset (01:30), then imaging if conditions allow. Circumstances: Sunset 19:01 Twilight end 20:18 Moonset 01:33 Twilight start 05:32 Sunrise 06:51 ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clear skies but variable seeing. Three definite, probably four plates done. No new hardware problems, minor software problems. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Clear sky all night, but variable seeing. We were alerted to possible aurora tonight following an X-class flare on the Sun from which protons arrived yesterday and peaked this afternoon (~22:00 UT). Last night's spectroscopy may have been affected. We continue to see the secondary galil full-step error. We seemed to see more AxisDTime errors than usual, although none for more than 0.5 sec. endNight hung while parsing the murmur log. After crtl-C'ing out, it worked the second attempt. See Problems section (1) for details. PR sop/2733 was raised. Observing sequence: 19:30 Plate 640, cartridge 2. Not done in 4 exposures. Only 1 of 3 exposures last night got (S/N)^2 > 2 for camera b1, so we are effectively starting from scratch again tonight. Tonight this field is about 30 deg from the Moon, so the sky level is very high and the S/N low, but at this time we have no observable fields farther from the Moon, so we are pressing on collecting what photons we can. After getting useful signal in only the red cameras, we give up on this plate for tonight. 22:20 Plate 676, cartridge 5. Probably done in 6 exposures. SoS reported the pre-science arc was useless, claiming that the flat-field screens were not closed and no arc lamps were turned on. The preceeding flat, however, was accepted as ok, so the flat-field screens were indeed closed. We looked in the header for one of the arc exposures, sdR-r2-00011085.fit, and found the FFS and arc lamp fields were blank, when they should be either 1's (for closed/on) or zeros (for open/off). The arc looked ok on the monitors, so apart from the header error, we believe the preCalib arc is ok and should be recoverable if someone can edit the header (how do you do that?). We filed PR#2731 against SOP to not write headers with empty header information. We were already in the second science exposure when we saw this, and SoS was correctly refusing to reduce the science exposures without a good arc. We decided to take another set of calibration exposures to ensure we had at least one good set. SoS did not apply the latter arc to earlier exposures, so we are going to guess that subsequent science exposures are representative, and assume the S/N on the first two is the same as the third. We have asked for confirmation that the plate is done before we unplug it, but have declared it done in the database. We also filed PR#2730 against SoS to reduce all science exposures with the first available arc, even if this comes after the science exposure. 00:46 Plate 662, cartridge 4. Done in 3 exposures. 02:16 Plate 702, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures. 03:53 Plate 713, cartridge 3. Done in 4 exposures. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2598 100 O ignore 55.48 59.76 43 doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11071, plate -9999 ------- 22:45 11071 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 11072, plate 640 ------- 0.0 8.7 0.0 15.7 00:21 11072 0.0 bias {{}} 00:51 11073 0.0 bias {{}} 02:01 11074 10.0 flat pre-flat 02:04 11075 2.0 arc pre-arc 02:36 11076 900.0 target science 03:00 11077 901.0 target science 03:21 11078 900.0 target science 03:39 11079 901.0 target science 03:57 11080 901.0 target science 04:04 11081 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} 04:06 11082 10.0 flat post-flat 04:08 11083 2.0 arc post-arc ----- sequence 11084, plate 676 ------- >9.3 >15.6 >11.5 >16.8 04:28 11084 10.0 flat pre-flat 04:30 11085 2.0 arc pre-arc Bad header!
