APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 17, 2001 (MJD 52261) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- (swing) Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Scot Kleinman Jurek Krzesinski Russell Owen (UW) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished two plates, imaged 82N, the rest of 32N and a bit of 33N in good seeing. We took donuts for Jim. The watcher core dumped once during the night. We found the imager focus formula about 350 microns off good focus (we needed to go more negative). When did the "lock/unlock" lever on the outside manipulator go away and why? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout ok. Before sunset, Atsuko collected Az fiducial data (see today's obsSoft phonecon notes -not yet posted, though), but not in time to have things checked out by the start of twilight, so we started with spectroscopy (vs. pointing model) pending her results. 00:54UT First up: Cart 3 plate 741. We found no stars and no fk5 star. There was (as is now usual) an azimuth too large to correct error at 18:01:55 in the murmur log. We forced the correction, but still no stars. A spiral pattern found a star, however, fairly quickly. The needed offsets are recorded below in the offsets section. There was some trouble getting spiralPattern to stop where we thought it should stop, but by 01:22 (egads!), we had our guide stars. We were going with science about 10 minutes past twilight (01:38). While preparing the telescope for the next cartridge during the smear for this cartridge, I accidentally hit the MCP laptop stop button. I did a quick axis init, but depending on where in the smear this plate was, the smear could be bad. At the time, Jurek thought the smear guider images looked reasonable. SoS reported redMonsters. During the cartridge change, I noticed the "lock/unlock" lever on the outside manipulator had gone away. While I don't mind its disappearance, I am a little curious why with all this communication (!:>) did I not know about this? 02:45UT Next up cart 6 plate 690. We needed an fk5 star to find guide stars with this plate (and then needed a 12"alt, 6"dec offset to find this f5k star). The second exposure on the plate (12268) had a good (S/N)^2 for the first three chips, much like the earlier exposure, but the r2 chip's S/N went down to 1.5 from 5.1 previously. We could find no reason for this decrease, other than perhaps SoS dyslexia. SoS also complained about a redMonster we could not verify. The sky was photometric by this time and the seeing looked good, so we switched to imaging, starting on 82N. We allowed 3deg of start time, and got the focus in shape by the startLambda of -162, frame 22. The formula (Focus(T)) did NOT give us a good focus, we ended up about 350 microns more negative. The nuError hovered around 8" during part of this run. We finished this run around 07:12UT at lambda=-124 and went on to finish that of 32N which wasn't finished earlier. We started 32N at -31.5 lambda. Pointing was OK from the get-go, but the seeing was crap. Seeing at the 3.5m was similarly bad, though (they had just gone from 0.8 to 2.5 or so). Seeing got good around frame 27 or so = maybe just in time to avoid a gap with the previous data. The run was good, but seeing blew up just as we finished (at lambda=+4). We stopped the run at 09:35UT. Next up stripe 33N. We chose to start 5deg earlier to allow the seeing to get better before the science began. But once again, smart thinking got the best of us and the seeing was good immediately, as was the pointing. ~Frame 34 is the start of the science lambda. Just when we got seeing so good we couldn't measure it, it jumped up to 2.00 or so then settled back down (around frame 52 where it settled down again -maybe around frame 46 where it got bad?). The seeing started to bite around frame 160, lambda~-39 - jumping to 2+". At this point, we closed the West enclosure door since the wind was Eastward. Things got better around frame 210, lambda~-31. The seeing reprieve was short-lived, going unacceptable again around frame 250, lambda~-28. I am going to record in the science plan this run as good from start to lambda=-40. We stopped the science part of the run shortly before twilight to take donuts to add to our collection. However, while preparing for the donuts, around 12:21UT ~frame 275, we stopped tracking (the watcher said "axis not tracking" and "axis halted by a problem" for all three axes in its usual helpful state. We init'ed and slewed somewhere near the end of the strip to take our donuts: Frame: 290 nominal focus Frame: 295 focus-300 Frame: 299 focus+300 Frames have been transferred to /data/photo/optics/52261 on sdsshost. At some point in the night, my watcher core dumped (running on host). A PR was filed, but I have little more to offer other than that it happened. We forgot (until after we started endNight) to get a long imager bias. We will take one tomorrow afternoon. endNight was still running as I finish this up. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2818 100 O ignore 133.25 141.57 70 2819 100 O bias -136.70 -136.27 17 2820 82 N science -164.34 -123.68 285 2821 32 N science -29.76 4.41 241 2822 33 N science -62.06 -19.56 309 variable seeing - totally bad by frame~274.
