APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 3, 2002 (MJD 52582) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Dan Long (APO; swing) Visitor: Jackie Diehl (NSO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 1 plate (1036) and useful data obtained for another plate (1143) before high humidity set in. Various minor problems. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- On starting an IOP session this afternoon, Pete got: ... IOP_DIR=/p/iop/v3_91_0 IOP_VERSION=NOCVS:v3_91_0:/p/iop/v3_91_0 MCP_VERSION=v5_13_5 ... You don't have access to the TK event loop, so cannot run the camera Xlib: connection to "sdsshost:21.1" refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key pgxwin_server: cannot connect to X server [sdsshost:21.1] ... You don't have access to the TK event loop, so cannot run the camera but other IOP sessions worked fine. He exited and restarted the offending IOP and all was also well. On moving up from 6deg to 30deg altitude after opening, the altitude axis aborted at 20deg. It also did that last night, but was not reported. Two axis init's allowed further motion. We suspect the dreaded flat-field screens, although in both instances, we did not touch them before getting going again. However, each axis init causes a jiggle in the wind baffle that might be sufficient to toggle a switch. A check of the mirror values showed that the Primary Lateral E Mig value was 0.052 below its nominal value. The tolerance limit is 0.05. Both mirrors were homed yesterday and the mirror was in collimation when imaging was done several nights ago. Dan suggested that the deviation from the nominal value may be due to thermal variations. In order to check this hypothesis, we did not home the mirror tonight. If the deviation persists, we will home the mirror tomorrow night. If homing the mirror does not improve the situation, we will adjust the nominal value accordingly. Clear at sunset but clouds are massing on the horizon and the satellite image shows a system is moving in, so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1036 (cartridge 4): After clearing the previous offsets, guide stars appeared. A bad guider flat caused some guiding problems for a while but a new guider flat (thanks Dan!) solved the problem. When combined with previous data (mjd=52579), this plate was finished in 3 exposures (60 minutes total). Slewing to instrument change position produced an error in the sop window. See the PROBLEMS section for details. Plate 1143 (cartridge 7): Guide stars on the gotoField. One useful exposure (20 minutes) was obtained before we had to close for high humidty (0420Z). Remainder of the night lost to high humidity and clouds. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3442 22:39Z 22:52Z 100 O 92.02 95.20 35 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:39 16803 0.0 bias ----- sequence 16804, plate 1036 ------- 21.6 20.1 24.9 21.3 tonight 01:35 16804 10.0 flat 19.9 17.1 29.7 22.6 52579 01:38 16805 2.0 arc ------------------- 02:03 16806 1200.1 target 41.5 37.2 54.6 43.9 DONE 02:28 16807 1200.1 target 02:51 16808 1200.1 target 02:59 16809 240.0 smear 03:02 16810 10.0 flat 03:04 16811 2.0 arc ----- sequence 16812, plate 1143 ------- 2.9 2.2 3.1 2.0 03:54 16812 10.0 flat 03:57 16813 2.0 arc 04:22 16814 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:43Z 4 1036 25.24 0.0022 54.49 -0.0005 200.92 -0.0026 0.999650 04:04Z 7 1143 -37.91 0.0011 50.78 0.0021 148.81 -0.0199 1.000010 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5668 Stays: JL5669 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:42Z 4 1036 0.99965 3455 3869 -160 26 54.4 6.6 10 166 ---- 1.8" 04:03Z 7 1143 1.00001 -99 956 -140 -38 50.9 5.0 16 128 ---- 2.2" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:53Z 50 34 9 231 (SW) 277 - clear 23:24Z 49 33 10 213 (SSW) 291 - clear 23:56Z 46 34 11 211 (SSW) 287 - clear 00:28Z 44 31 8 173 (S) 276 - clear 00:58Z 44 31 8 179 (S) 256 - clear 01:28Z 44 32 9 164 (SSE) 280 - clear 01:59Z 43 33 13 152 (SSE) 239 - clear 02:29Z 43 33 12 142 (SE) 273 - clear 02:59Z 43 32 17 147 (SSE) 274 - partly cloudy 03:30Z 42 33 17 146 (SE) 236 - mostly cloudy 04:00Z 41 33 16 130 (SE) 218 - clear 04:31Z 38 33 17 127 (SE) 163 - clear, high humidity 05:01Z 36 33 21 127 (SE) 149 - partly cloudy 05:31Z 40 36 21 148 (SSE) 151 - partly cloudy 06:01Z 40 36 20 138 (SE) 137 - cloudy, high humidity 06:32Z 39 37 23 129 (SE) 134 - cloudy, high humidity 07:04Z 39 36 22 126 (SE) 166 - cloudy, high humidity 07:34Z 39 36 20 135 (SE) 148 - cloudy, high humidity 08:04Z 39 36 21 141 (SE) 161 - cloudy, high humidity 08:36Z 38 36 17 144 (SE) 169 - cloudy, high humidity 09:07Z 37 37 26 133 (SE) 19229 - cloudy, high humidity 09:37Z 37 37 17 157 (SSE) 14624 - cloudy, high humidity 10:07Z 36 36 18 153 (SSE) 8460 - cloudy, high humidity 10:37Z 36 36 18 144 (SE) 6043 - cloudy, high humidity 11:08Z 36 36 15 153 (SSE) 5155 - cloudy, high humidity ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:15 Doors open, fans on 00:20 Enclosure off 04:20 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off (high humidity).
