APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 12, 2002 (MJD 52591) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Support: Craig Loomis, twice (once again we start with support!) Dave Woods Swing: Dan Long Night: Pete Newman Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- In spite of Moon, a fairly productive night. Declared 4 plates done and got a short imaging drift on strip 14N. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: Craig found a wire pair in the gangs tape chassis on the SCSI cable that had been chewed through by a nearby fan. He also found a bad power connector to the 3d6 tape drive. We swapped out the chassis and the cable (Craig, Dave and Steph). Hopefully we are back in business. The rest of swing shift checkout went without problems. We started with spectroscopy (moon limited us, of course). 01:16Z Cartridge 7, plate 1143: Stars on slew. A 20 minute exposure did not give (S/N)^2 > 2 even under good seeing and mostly clear skies. We were too close to the Moon. We went on "Other weather problem" until a plate farther from the Moon was available. 02:50Z Cartridge 3, plate 1093: Stars on slew. Good signal in two 20 minute exposures. With previous nights' data, we could declare it done. A smear was taken. 04:15Z Cartridge 4, plate 1084: Stars on slew. The saoDisplay showed a large offset between the guide fiber positions between the gotoField guider flat and the preCal guider flat...off by about 2 asec. A subsequent guider flat did not show much shift. Declared this plate done after three exposures and one poor smear. Unfortunately, we saw that it wanted a post-cal after we already had unmounted the cartridge. 05:59Z Cartridge 8, plate 1070: Guide fiber 6 saoMon cut-out was too close to the saoDisplay edge, so we couldn't get an saoDisplay working until we ran saoMon -simple. This is not a very graceful failure mode ... Stars on slew. Declared done in three exposures and one smear. Seeing variable. 07:50Z Cartridge 2, plate 1063: Stars on slew. Finished in two science exposures and a smear, when added to previous exposures. Declared done. 09:21Z Cartridge 1, plate 806: Stars on slew. Another large offset (about 0.5 asec) between the gotoField and pre cal guider flats. Lots of dirt on guide fibers 8 and 9. Stopped after one exposure so we could... 09:56Z Switch to imaging. Strip 14N, started at lambda -68. Focus loop converged by frame 22 at 10:31Z. No skippy results until frame 25, lambda -65, but all in spec. 10:43Z we are at lambda -62, frame 43. 10:51Z We see warnings about high sky levels in i' and z'. We are pointing at approx. az=30 deg, alt=59 deg at the time. We save screen captures of the sky levels in all filters down column three during the drift, so you can see the changing levels. These images are on sdsscommish in /usrdevel/snedden/sky. A few days ago, Jon B wondered if we were seeing some effect from Mt. Etna erupting. Possibly? 12:07Z 18 degree twilight, lambda -41, frame 184. We continue to image until 12:15Z as a ramp down. Sorry Jim, no donuts tonight. Ended at lambda -38.9 and frame 199. Seeing was good throughout the drift. 12:30Z Closed and darkened the enclosure for an on-telescope bias. Note that the PMSS pressure was on the high side of normal: 44 psi. 13:17Z Mounted cartridge 7 for the guider darks that Jim wants. They are stored on sdsshost in ~prn/52591/. Details follow: Files: gimg0731 - 0735 Dark, 10 sec 0736 - 0740 Dark, 20 sec 0741 - 0745 Dark, 30 sec 0746 - 0750 Flat, 5 sec Files will be removed after about a month, so please copy them to wherever you want to keep them. 13:51Z endNight failed, as a result of the tape drive work done during the afternoon. Craig was called. There was a tape in one drive when we put things back together, and the drive probably got power-cycled with the tape in. The key error messages were: Media : READY, write protected at FMK, block 2 Error * /bin cpio -o -H ustar Error writing to /dev/mt/tps4d3nrsvc : Read-only file system Craig suggested ejecting and remounting the tapes. This was done, and it worked (whew!) endNight finished normally. While updating the plate database, we had a problem.
