APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 27, 2002 (MJD 52606) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Dan Looooong (Tall at least :) (swing) Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- NO SPACE LEFT ON sdsshost root directory !!!!!!!!!!! 3 plates done 1 got a lot S/N but wasn't declared done. One guider problem on -gflat (see the problem section). Serious problem with the guider fibers - fixed but lost one pair of communication fibers from the guider box, see the log. Still problem with passing S/N for plate 677 into the plate "visibility" page and the same problem with plate 1143. Also: We are asking about procedure for bad (red in SOS page) Xsigma, Wsigma, when they happen during observations. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout ok. We are running a new iop test version (v3_98_0), which Eric cut for us today (with a fix to logTool -THANKS ERIC :)) . 00:37Z cart 6 plt 677 on the telescope, stars found with fk5 (we've got a good pointing on that plate last night, but not tonight). Done with two exposures (combining with the one from the previous night). But we couldn't declare it done since there was an error in the plug map file: No map 0677-52601-01 while executing "error_old $arg" (procedure "error" line 4) invoked from within "error "No map $mapId"" (procedure "mapDone" line 5) invoked from within "mapDone $mapId $code $mjd" (procedure "tmlProc" line 142) invoked from within "tmlProc" 02:16Z cart 7 plt 1143 mounted, stars on slew. We've got usefull exposures on this one. We don't see S/N on "visiblility" page for this plate too! 03:16Z cart 4 plt 1125 mounted, stars on slew. Plate done with 3 exposures. 04:52Z cart 8 plt 1080 mounted, stars on slew. Not done we've got S/N > 15 in b1,r2,b2 but 12.9 in r1. Seeing + clouds spoiled our integration time predictions. 06:32Z cart 1 plt 809 mounted: there was missunderstanding about the cartridge number to mount, I mounted number 1 (also good for this time), but Dan wanted number 2 (so we lost a few minutes setting up for a wrong plate and then realising that I made a mistake). Stars on slew. XSIGMA and WSIGMA went red on this plate. We endStare exposure and run collimation procedure. We declaired this exposrue as bad. After collimating there was too late to do anything with that plate. We switched to another cart. Bad XSIGMA & WSIGMA during observations: This is already a third time when something like this happened (during my shifts anyway) and our decisions always were the same: get rid off "bad data" and collimate, but actually we don't have any procedure for such events - are these data realy bad? Could someone look at them and tell us what would be the best apporoach when it'll happen, please? 08:06Z cart 9 plt 898 mounted. Guider failure on gotoField (see the problem section). Stars found via fk5. 09:53Z On the second exposure we lost the guider. Somehow the communication fibers from the guider got caught in a lift plate or something else (the telescope was pointing almost at the zenith) and were broken during the last exposure. We were blindly waiting 5 more minutes to finish this exposure. No - didn't make it. The fix would be reterminating broken fibers (which is not possible at the moment). We will try to find a spare pair of fibers around rotator and use them instead. John B. was called for consultaion. Dan remembered where were the spare fibers attached and we found them, then put them in place of the broken ones. After a short fight with paralens (how to spell this one?) ##### we got guider working! The plug on one of the spare fiber is bent a little, but it is enough to make it VERY difficult to put this plug into the guider socket. However we menaged to do this. Note to observers - to get into a proper fiber port, move the rotator to 71 deg position, then at the imager dewar side you will see the round cover over the port. The telescope should be at the stow position. 11:04Z FIXED! Lost almost two hours, but at least we can continue observations The plate 898 was still valid. And finaly ... plate one. No problems with logTool anymore, so we declared iop v3_98_0 current. endNight rejoyced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 00:17 17151 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17152, plate 677 ------- 01:00 17152 10.0 flat 01:03 17153 2.0 arc 01:27 17154 1200.1 target ----- sequence 17152, plate 677 ------- 01:50 17155 1200.1 target 01:58 17156 240.0 smear 02:01 17157 10.0 flat 02:04 17158 2.0 arc ----- sequence 17159, plate 1143 ------- 02:19 17159 10.0 flat 02:22 17160 2.0 arc 02:40 17161 900.1 target 03:03 17162 1200.1 target ----- sequence 17163, plate 1125 ------- 03:23 17163 10.0 flat 03:26 17164 2.0 arc 03:49 17165 1200.1 target 04:11 17166 1200.1 target 04:34 17167 1200.1 target 04:42 17168 240.0 smear ----- sequence 17169, plate 1080 ------- 04:57 17169 10.0 flat 05:00 17170 2.0 arc 05:22 17171 1200.1 target 05:47 17172 1300.1 target 06:15 17173 1500.1 target 06:23 17174 240.0 smear ----- sequence 17175, plate 809 ------- 06:56 17175 10.0 flat 06:58 17176 2.0 arc 07:25 17177 1383.0 target 07:31 17178 2.1 arc 07:34 17179 2.1 arc 07:47 17180 2.1 arc 07:50 17181 2.1 arc ----- sequence 17182, plate 898 ------- 08:26 17182 10.0 flat 08:29 17183 2.0 arc 08:57 17184 1500.1 target 09:25 17185 1500.1 target 09:57 17186 1800.1 target 10:05 17187 240.0 smear 10:12 17188 10.0 flat 10:15 17189 2.0 arc 11:17 17190 10.0 flat 11:20 17191 2.0 arc 11:48 17192 1500.1 target 12:16 17193 1500.1 target 12:24 17194 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:58Z 6 677 17.50 0.0046 55.98 0.0016 194.57 -0.0022 0.999860 02:25Z 7 1143 -36.48 0.0033 51.31 0.0015 149.92 -0.0140 0.999800 03:24Z 4 1125 -6.18 0.0040 57.06 0.0013 174.74 -0.0005 0.999890 05:13Z 8 1080 -33.28 0.0048 52.41 0.0018 152.45 -0.0078 0.999840 07:12Z 1 809 -33.37 0.0020 52.40 0.0023 152.41 0.0061 0.999930 08:25Z 9 898 124.08 0.0005 50.85 0.0003 -88.10 -0.0072 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5756 Stays: JL5757 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:58Z 6 677 0.99986 1381 2257 -50 17 56.0 -0.1 6 344 gdr 1.8 02:25Z 7 1143 0.99980 1974 2761 -50 -36 51.4 0.1 12 5 - 1.6 03:25Z 4 1125 0.99989 1085 1934 -125 -6 57.1 -0.1 19 18 - 2.0 05:12Z 8 1080 0.99984 1579 2381 -100 -33 52.5 0.2 24 22 - 2.1 07:12Z 1 809 0.99993 690 1545 -200 -33 52.4 1.2 17 35 - 2.4 08:24Z 9 898 1.00020 -1974 -581 -125 124 50.8 1.2 3 89 - 2.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:23Z 32 23 2 32 (NNE) 449 - 00:56Z 32 24 11 39 (NE) 496 - 01:28Z 31 22 9 5 (N) 442 - 01:59Z 32 21 10 11 (N) 403 - 02:30Z 32 20 15 19 (NNE) 347 - 03:01Z 31 24 13 9 (N) 442 - 03:33Z 31 20 16 19 (NNE) 381 - 04:06Z 32 20 16 21 (NNE) 345 - 04:38Z 32 21 21 36 (NE) 322 - 05:08Z 32 18 23 32 (NNE) 183 - 05:39Z 33 20 25 23 (NNE) 208 - 06:10Z 34 19 12 25 (NNE) 310 - 06:43Z 34 18 18 36 (NE) 163 - 07:15Z 34 14 16 33 (NNE) 135 - 07:47Z 33 12 4 170 (S) 112 - 08:19Z 34 10 8 54 (NE) 82 - 08:50Z 33 10 10 68 (ENE) 83 - 09:21Z 32 8 4 183 (S) 111 - 09:52Z 32 3 8 148 (SSE) 143 - 10:23Z 32 10 9 144 (SE) 184 - 10:56Z 32 8 6 107 (ESE) 159 - 11:26Z 32 -1 13 80 (E) 162 - 11:56Z 31 -1 16 78 (ENE) 192 - 12:28Z 33 -5 8 108 (ESE) 124 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 22:30Z fans on, doors open 00:00Z Telescope open, dewars refilled. 13:45Z Telescope closed, LN2 hoses hooked up. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_98_0 Watcher: v2_20_0 MCP: v5_16_0 TPM: tpm_v2_18_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: 2.6.8 sdssProcedures: v1_56 SoS: v4_9_13 hoggPT: v1_5_8 plate-mapper: v4_1_0 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0830 0.0790 Axial B 0.7950 0.7970 Axial C 0.8170 0.8240 Trans D -9.0790 -9.1130 Lateral E 1.8870 1.8870 Lateral F 1.4260 1.4300 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
